Problem fixed.
I added the C:/Steam ......il2 directory to the Nortons "Exclude from Scans" setting and the "Exclude from Auto-protect, SONAR and Download Intelligence Detection" setting. I then checked that the game was in version 1.05 and closed the game. I deleted the cache and extracted the patch to the game folder. Everything now works OK.
