thanks very much for your reply Major Borris- that link was helpful and point # 15 'Note about Aero Desktop Composition' and disabling desktop composition seemed to make all the difference- that was the only change I made after which I got it running smoothly with everything maxed out at 1920x1080 and can run even with Nvidia 3D Vision just about- and even medium graphical settings at 5760x1080 triple monitors- so much more satisfying- thanks so much!

(PS- after finally installing again onto this 'clean' system- to confirm, BF3 also runs normally after installing so no issues beyond Il-2)

I'd love to take you up on your offer for a full walkthrough on other tweaks etc to optimize this sim to the max- what is the ATAG Ts3 coms and what do I need to do to proceed?

Is it worth installing Patch 1.06.17582? Does it improve framerate further? Can we still play multiplayer with beta patches or are there any limitations with the beta patches and how can we uninstall the patches back to the version I'm at now if the patches cause instability? Also interested in any mods for improved sound effects, particularly of the machine guns/cannons etc and playing online, flying in formation with squadrons online etc-seems like a steep learning curve with this sim, but I'm about to learn to fly for real in life and hope it complements this game
