Generally speaking - no - people can obviously overclock successfully using 8Gig (or more) RAM.

What may (?) be a factor is if you are adding more sticks of RAM that are not exactly same as those you currently run now. I have heard that there can be problems with mixing memory sticks from different manufacturers even though they are on paper exactly the same spec. (Have even heard that there can be issues with different production batches of same-spec memory from the same manufacturer. !?)

A more likely possibility is that your motherboard may struggle to run 8Gig at overclocked rates, while having no problems with 4 - the extra power requirements may necessitate reducing clock speeds. Obviously is motherboard dependent. Many will OC on 8Gig or more, but if you have been specifically told not to by people that are knowledgable and that you trust (?) then you may be best to heed their advice.

That's all I can suggest. Maybe someone else can give more info.
