Thanks man, I have seen a couple of the scenes from the clips, in "World at War" The Documentary, but This is not from that. I have WAW and I checked it with the scenes I saw and they aren't from it. Atleast I don't think so.
I'm a WWII Doc junky ! and even more so with WWII airplanes.
My Uncle was a B17 navigator/bombardier. Crazy Shit ! He told me some stories that would make you freak out. He flew 28 missions back to back, because the day before his first mission he got a letter that his wife was pregnant, so he requested to fly all his missions like that so he could get home to her.
It was hell on him. It was also before the B17's had any escorts.
He said he would fly with one crew and then get switched the next mission to another, and then his old crew wouldn't come back the next trip. This went on and on through 28 missions !
He had one mission around halfway through, where a squadron of new guys got lost and then when they got to their bomb site the noobs had made it there but came in above all the other squadrons and dropped their bombs on top of their own fellow B17's. The tail end of one bomb went through the co pilot seat killing him and making a tear halfway through the front of the plane almost taking the nose clean off.
The plane started losing altitude and then the glass nose that he was in started to fall/burn off. Thank God the pilot came to and pulled my uncle back up and over the flight control panel ! I saw pictures of the plane that my uncle took after they made it back and it was a flying pile of rubble with no nose ! My uncle's face had some bad scars from the frost bite that he got on the ride home .
One person who became his life long friend that day was the Tail gunner from that mission. I meet him once at my Uncles house. They called him, The Buzz Saw , because he cut down 7 109's on the flight home that day ! The 109's loved going after the damaged planes that couldn't hold formation anymore.
My Uncle always said they could hold their own against anyone when they flew as Tight as a young girls ass ! But the squadrons that flew loose got ripped apart by Luftwaffe.
Crazy stuff, I just thank God he lived through it so I could get to know him.
We can never know the hell those guys went through day after day, flight after flight !
