Hurricanes of No 85 Squadron.





Some background information about this famous shot. For the ones who are interested

"Hawker Hurricane Mk. I aircraft of 85 Squadron Royal Air Force from Church Fenton, Yorkshire, England during Saturday the 5th of October 1940. They are undertaking a Squadron "BALBO" for the benefit of Official Air Ministry Photographer Mr. B. J. Daventry.

12 aircraft participated their pilots were Squadron Leader Peter Wooldridge Townsend, Sergeant Ernest Reginald Webster, Sergeant George Ernest Goodman, Flight Lieutenant James Eglington Marshall, Flying Officer John Allman Hemingway, Pilot Officer William Henry Hodgson, Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey Allard, Sergeant Kenneth William Gray, Pilot Officer François de Labouchère, Pilot Officer Émile Fayolle, Sergeant Konrad Antoni Muchowski and Sergeant Paleniczer.

Mr. B. J. Daventry flew in a borrowed 306 Squadron Royal Air Force Miles Master aircraft to undertake the photography.

Identified Hawker Hurricane Mk. I aircraft from left to right are as follows; V6611 (VY-U), P3961 (VY-G) as flown by Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey Allard, P3854 (VY-Q), V6761 (VY-O), V6760 (VY-X),V7440 (VY-M) and P3408 (VY-K).
