I've tried UDPSpeed and found it to not work, I suffered from the problem sniperton describes above, plus the dials wouldn't all fit on my 2nd monitor which is 900x1440 in portrait orientation. I have an ATI 5870 btw.
I really wish for IL2 1946 there was something like the CloD VirtualCockpit app because I tried that out and it was fantastic, just a shame that I rarely play CloD.
The most helpful gauge for me would be a trim indicator - I never know how much trim I've got on any of the planes (mainly because none of the planes I fly seem to have either working dials/wheels in the cockpit or they're not marked in any useful way) and it would be helpful so that I can learn that x amount of trim on the elevator gives me level flight in x condition or x amount on the rudder stops me veering left or right down the runway or puts the ball in the middle to stop slip.
