You are almost certainly flying Spitfire/Hurricane, correct?

The effect you are experiencing is historically correct, BoB era RAF fighters were equiped with a carb that would cut out under negative 'G', such as when you push the stick forward abruptly. When you pull back on the stick, positive 'G' is pulled enabling fuel to flow through the carb again so the engine 'picks up' again.

Standard technique to overcome this is to roll inverted then pull the stick till you are pointing in the direction you wish to go then roll upright again.
