What is wrong with a free download that gives you 2 competitive free planes to play? What is wrong with buying just the things you want? In most cases that is considerably cheaper then to shell out $40+ for follow up expansions.
Its great the old "official" Il-2 eventually added so many planes but they not all were "free" - most came with expansions. On top of that a good number of those planes I would never even sit in the cockpit let alone fly them.
Being able to buy only those things you want is a good thing...
