ORIGIN mid 16th cent.: from French sarcasme, or via late Latin from late Greek sarkasmos, from Greek sarkazein ‘tear flesh,’ in late Greek‘gnash the teeth, speak bitterly’ (from sarx, sark- ‘flesh’).
