Skins should work in multiplayer without getting u banned as long as u install them correctly and they are of bmp or jpg format.
(into the Paintscheme folder)
The head of All aircraft Simulation got the following answer from a 1C enployee.

There's absolutely no problem with using custom skins, as long as they go through the stock channel, i.e. are stored in your game's il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\PaintSchemes\Skins folder and are in one of the standard formats, that is jpg or bmp

If however you are using the sfs crack to mod the plane's .dds files, that might very well get you banned in case you use the locked textures to add visibility to enemy planes, or transparency to your own, or something like that.

In short, just use the stock location for custom paintschemes in il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\PaintSchemes\Skins

and you should be perfectly fine!”
