Also in these type of missions when you are looking at the map you are not controling any aircraft, the ai is. So if you are sitting in the lead plane you will see the ai fly towards the target. If you happen to be sitting in a wingman plane you make that plane tempararily the lead plane and the other planes follow you, but if you look at the map that switches back so you will see your plane bank sharply atempting to get back in position behind the leader.

Try doing it on a different mode i.e. doing it in arcade, try it in realistic. Doing it in realistic, try sim. Bizarrely certain missions are easier in certain modes for some random reason.
