they WERE supercharged.
All combat planes in game have supercharged engines. This is not WWI .......
And sure, flightbehaviour such heights were different than in thicker air...you had to be gentle on the stick, otherwise you get very fast a stall, indicated airspeeds so up high were low, dangerous close to minimum manouver speeds
