Do you by any chance run vista or win7 with the aero interface switched off?
Currently, when trying to record a track you get a windows pop-up asking you where to save the file. If aero is disabled it crashes.
Selecting your aircraft in multiplayer worked in a similar way (windows pop-ups) but they changed it to function from within the game interface, so i guess they will do something similar for tracks too at some point. Until then, the solution is to fly with the windows aero interface enabled.
