Granted the graphics can't compete with anything current, but the gameplay is quite enjoyable. I've downloaded a collection of over 500 maps and have only gotten through about 300 of them. I can still find people making new maps so the enthusiasm is still there.
Anyway, I would suggest looking into it and giving it a try. You can get Heroes 3 Complete very cheap, which has all three games on 1 disc.

I loved Heroes 3, however, I run Windows 7 64 bit now and I heard there was a lot of problems playing that game in Windows 7.
I could run it in a virtual machine, or I could slide over to my old windows 2000 machine.
I'd much rather be able to play it natively on my primary machine though.
