Okay, here's my experience - installed, set the most basic things up (some controls, screen res, flew a quick mission. All video settings on medium.
Then I turned off the epilepsy filter, flew some more - already flew better. Then I've tried the 6 fighters vs 9 bombers mission - slideshow at first. Then got better.
Then the patch came tonight, fixed the microstutters, megastutters when attacking bombers (still the FPS are declining, but performance altogether better), and I can enable AA now - looks even better.
Here are my system specs:
Intel Core2Quad 9650 on X48 chipset
4GB RAM
ATI 5870 1GB
on board sound
Win 7 64-bit
Haven't crashed once. So, with your system specs, either it has to do with nVidia drivers (some people who have nVidia are complaining) or you're doing something wrong. I have a friend who's running DCS, for example, with about a dozen other applications running on his very high end machine, and then complains about occasional stutters.... Wonder why

?
What I would also do definitely would be to check the game cache integrity through Steam. BTW, you can't be running the game without Steam, it starts whenever you start the game.
