Said as that, sounds like Freetrack is all "reverse engineering". No, Freetrack makes the link with a webcam, acquire a image, do the computing to create 6DOF data. Nothing of this is "reverse engineering". This is some misconception that leads to a lot of confusion.
What Freetrack did was can link with TIR hardware (feature removed after NP request). And use TIR interface to link the 6DOF data and games.
Freetrack didn't "reverse engineering the NP interface to accept Webcams". There is no need to "reverse engineering" a software to use a 2D image of tree dots and create 6DOF HT data. It's simple.
