I think this is bang on. I haven't played a PC game since maybe 2000 or 2001. The keeping up was just insane. You would go and buy a new game, and guess what? The freaking video card on your 1 year old machine wasn't good enough. Nor the sound card. And guess what? Now you need RAM. Ugh.
I moved to Mac aeons ago, and just buy a new console when the new Xbox editions come out. For the price of just and upgrade in the PC world, I get years of happy gaming on my Xbox. Sure, I had one die, once, so what? Still cheaper than monkeying around on the PC machine.
My Mac does all the other stuff a computer should do - internet, word, whatever, and by not being a PC gamer, I don't have to upgrade my Mac as often either. Which means I can buy all the Xbox games I want, when they come out!
Win. Just win.
