personally, i'd use a I-153, small enough to be hard to spot, maneuverable enough to turn on a six pence and get out of that spotlight. - yeah i thought you might!! was a pain in the arse trying to shoot this thing down before!! great game btw, your a good flyer. 
it would also make you feel more involved in the game, at the moment there is virtually no involvement with ground units, this way it would feel like your working with the ground units.
what would also be good is to make the flak and spotlights destructible.
