The hurricane Mk1 didnt have 12 MG's either, they stuck with 8. the 12 guns were implemented into the MkII series, because a new reinforced wing could handle that many guns in the wing (as well as rockets/bombs/drop tanks)

Yes. The only US fighters at Leyte Gulf, were the US Navy FM2 Wildcats which flew off of the "Truck Carriers". F4Fs were kinda phased out in 44'. And Grumman started to focus on F6Fs and such, while GM created the FM1-2-3s (which 3s were just a prototype that I don't think actually got off the paper?)
