to answer "How on Earth did the Russians actually use this plane?"
It was used against ground targets mostly.. with the 37mm being able to destroy tanks... but.. the 37 should make short work of a plane too.. hopefully not with more than 2-3 hits. If you need more cannon hits than that... its a useless plane
.. just take the Yak-3 in that case
