IL:2 sturmovik 1946 disc error

I just bought sturmovik yesterday and only now had the chance to try install it, so i pop the disc in.... it does not read the disc.

I go to my computer and tell it to open, however this makes no difference. I have tried another disc and my computer is fully operational as it read my battlefield 2 disc.

does anybody know the problem I may be getting?

First check:

Your optical drive is a DVD rom not a CD rom ?

If you have a DVD rom then it could be a Securom issue.

Vista 64bit suffers from Securom problems.

Check this thread at the UBI forums it may help you identify your problem.

I have been scanning through but its all rather unknown to me, so I dont have a clue what would relate to me.

The only thing im certain of is that I dont even get an error, it just spins and does not read it however like i said any other disc operates perfect

Unfortunately you have a dud DVD writer. Pure and simple.
Yes it reads the odd disk but not all of them. I am sure you have already noticed this with other disks if not welcome to the club.
Not much you can do about it really.
Your solutions are one of two things.
Connect to another computer and use it's DVD drive, should be simple enought, a friends laptop etc.
or replace the offending DVD writer.
Trust me, if this is the first time it has happened, it will happen again, sooner or later.
Get rid of the piece of junk.
The likelihood of it being the actual disk are zero to none.

Wrong. It might be the drive, but it can be the disc, the odds of that are very low, but they are not zero. Some discs are marginal, some drives are marginal, a marginal disc in a marginal drive might not play, however the possibility of a non-marginally bad disc exists. If the disc plays anywhere else at all, then probably the drive is less than ideal, but if it doesn't, the disc actually could be dead. It's unlikely, but unlikely things happen, just not very often.

Wrong again :P

I did some trawling around the internet for a couple hours and found a solution

I opened up mycomputer, rightclicked and did 'search' and basically searched the disc for an A.exe when then allowed me to install.

So im thinking its alright now (as i see the installation menu and all the rest of it)

EDIT : the thing about a Dud Dvd writer is interesting though, because I had a virus that wiped my DVD writer from processing discs so i had to reinstall windows. so its not always because the dvd writer is fubar'd

I don't claim to be perfect.

I did wonder about that one earlier, but re-reading your post before suggesting that, you definitely seemed to me to say that the O/S couldn't see the disc, which is a different sort of error entirely.

That's what I was saying, not every problem is a dead drive.

I would have suggested this method but I thought your computer wasn't showing the disk...you said it kept spinning. Glad you sorted it out...
