The computer is a "team" of hardware, all must be good, sometimes were have a big processor but a bad videocard...dont work well.
Is not time back to AMD or ATI yet... Nvidia and intel are better today.
I want sugest a computer: Intel e8600/e8400, Motherboard with chipset P35 (Gigabyte/Asus), 2 x 2GB DDR 1066 (Sugest Corsair), Videocard: GF8800GT 512 (G92) select with highest memory frequence.
Do 3 partition in your computer, 2 windows ligth, install the games and programs in 3rd partion with short cut to descktop, Select anisotropic off and antialiasyng in 16.
I have FPS in 45/75 with perfect settings.

much better to use a P45 mobo...some P35 board don't support E8400s out of the box, they need a bios flash. very troublesome if u don't have another socket 775 cpu...

No, P45 chipset is 18% expensive and dont show FPS advantages, check www.tomshardware.com.

If you build a computer with and E8400 on a P35 motherboard IT WILL NOT WORK! you need to buy another (older) CPU and flash the motherboard BIOS then uninstall old cpu and install 45nm E8400.

buying 2 cpus will be more expensive than buying a 45nm ready motherboard.

this does not apply to all P35 boards, some of them come with updated bios.

LOL! I have a Gigabyte GA P35 DS3 with a E8400!! Please, please read more about hardware! In higth quality setting Nvidia still on Top, i dont sell hardware, i like good hardware.

Well, why not get the P45 today? It has PCI Express 2.0 support and better support for DDR3 in the future... Got myself a Gigabyte GA-EP45C-DS3R last week for a similar combo that you suggest for a rebuild of my MediaCenter PC. Added a E8400 CPU, Gigabyte Silent 9600GT and 2 GB Corsair DDR2 memory. Runs silent and fast - the 45 mn CPU:s are great for MCE:s. It runs IL2 like a charm too - nice on a 42 inch TV ;) The EP45C-DS3R has support for both DDR2 and DDR3 which is something I like - bought DDR2 now but I can switch to DD3 in the future when swapping around memory in my PC:s at home...

EDIT: The GA-EP45C-DS3R was really cheap so why go for a P35?

Seems like a good board! PCI-E 2.0 is important. I don't think the DDR3 memory support is neccesary, when DDR3 will be needed, it will be along with another CPU so that means a socket change and a new mobo... still, pretty cool that it supports both kinds.

A Gigabyte or Asus P45 board seems to be the best buy, which might also be why they are out of stock in A LOT of places...

You're right, but when the Nehalems arrive this winter and my main rig gets an overhaul there will be DDR3 memory in my house. Sooner or later old parts drizzle around the household computers and then the DDR3 support in the Media Center PC may come in handy. In like two-three years or so ;)

You're going to get a nehalem then? even tough the clockspeeds are so slow? the fastest one is 3.2 GHz right? the E8400 can do at least 3.6 ...the benefit of a quadcore CPU will probably not be noticable for another 2-3 years...

I'm looking to but a new rig soon and i see no reason for quadcore, i'm going for an E8400 3.6-4Ghz on one core for just one game must be good enough...most games can only use one core so the fastest and most expensive nehalem will be 400-800mhz slower than the E8400. Or am i missing something?...
