There are some great offers on Steam at the moment but I'm out of space on my computer's HD. Is it possible to download, install and run large games from an external HD? If yes, would that much affect performance?

P.S.: Running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on a MacBook Pro using Bootcamp.

Many games will run.

There will be some performance hit when loading textures etc from disk. How much of a hit will depend on how much the game accesses the disk and the type of external drive. USB 3 will be better than USB 2 for example.
