basically some saint, a writer guy, somehow got permission to take a p-38 up, flew it like a total noob, got himself shot down... and the german pilot kinda felt a bit bad about it...

It about Antoine de Saint-Exupéry[*click-me*], a famous author, maybe "petit prince" rings a bell?
A few years ago some German claimed to have shot him down over the coast of Marseille.

Or shorter: Famous pilot, famous writer, pilot sad because he killed such an important person whose books he liked.

Rem: I personally dont share his attitude but anyway.
