Poor performance in multiplayer?

When playing in single player I can max the game out at 1080p with no problems, but when playing online I get constant lag and " finding server " popups. lowering the settings seems to help some but I don't think I should have to do this... is this a known issue and is there any fix?

Heres my system, i5 2500K, 8GB ram, GTX 570, SSD
