When can you reach Charon?
 

When is the earliest you can reach Charon?

I have tried to reach Charon in both the Container Ship you start with and the Armed Trader Ship you get 1 mission in.

Both times I get jumped when gating into the system and killed before the ship can even maneuver.

I think it is an script death animation event.

You need follow the game to the point when you will have repainted Mastiff in Ellio. After this you can travel to the Charon.
