Hey guys, from what I've been hearing (don't have the game yet because I'm in Canada), there's not many Sim games on PS3, so I figured I'd make a thread where we can put down our PSN's to add eachother and finally get in some good quality sim games! :grin: Don't bother to put your name down if you're just going to crash your plane when you take some damage...

This should definitely get stickied, as should any similiar thread for the Xbox guys. At the moment the "sim" community for this game is in its infancy, so any help for people finding like-minded players has got to be a good thing.

Hey guys, Axe99 here, and I'm a mode floozy, I'll play all three (although prefer Realistic/Sim, but find that most games are in Arcade). I've only got room to add one or two peeps though (I run an Aus/NZ clan (not IL-2, although a few of us play)) and am involved in a PS3 community site, and that hits your friends list pretty hard - who would be the best most 'active' players to add, so I can track you down when you're on?

Don't usually like to bump things, but I kind of need to here. I've been waiting in a lobby for Sim Team Battle I made about 30 minutes ago, yet not one person has stepped foot in my room :evil:

I'll be playing more Sim mode after the patch... kind of hard to set the trim with such a big deadzone... once I get my trim and analog hat back i'll be in there.

You can add me if you like Silence (Axe99), although I'm not playing Team Battles or Dogfights until the patch fixes the deadzone as well. Still do CTA and Strike on sim though :).

I started with sim right off and couldn't believe the only thing going on online was arcade. Seems like a bunch of Ace Combat addicts out there who can't do without the red arrow.

Reason why, I think, is the controls, regular wireless using r3 to look is near impossible, you can't use the rudder and it always ends up altering the throttle.

Aviator layout is better, but since it's stuck with r1 and l1 for the rudder, to be able to look around you have to sacrifice good rudder control cause the only choices are full left, full right and neutral.

I hope the patch is gonna include control configurability, cause it's needed BAD. Besides the glaring online issues. Rudder should be r2 and l2.

I'm looking for good sim matches also, add AR_Kozz

Especially strike matches, my clan is inactive but I think I'll revive it for that. 5v5, sim, limited f/a, find all targets visually. That's how it should be

nice, new "faces" I left il2 sturmovik for a while and I am excited to see that the competition increases. add me if you want that good old sim challenge

By the way, please transfer over to sim people that play realistic, we all have the same controller problems. I use the PS3 controller, there is no such thing as a player having an advantage over another. just a thought.

And by the same token, if you have friends that play arcade, get them to reduce elevator sensitivity then get them into realistic. They will soon love the ease of killing once they don't have to fight the stalls. Then it's a short hop to simulator :)

For those who need practice, I can volunteer to be easy prey by choosing a less competent plane (you choose my plane if you like lol) I enjoy challenges, but beware because I can fly them all quite well ;)

As edal said, realistic players go and try sim. I just tried few realistic games and noticed that there are lots of good pilots. I personally don't like realistic because it's too easy to follow enemy with all those fancy perks. Point is when playing sim pilots can lose their tail with good manoveurs and good luck, (but not edal, he's pain in your a** when flying :)) but it's nearly impossible in realistic. And i'm flying with pad with aviator setup, both sensitivities set to half.

I will add you soon if you're ok. It was really cool to have 5+ people yesterday playing sim, thank you all guys.

Hey all. I am relatively new to the PS3 (got a slim) and just bought Il2. I am now doing the single player but would like if you guys would add me as a friend in your list so that at some point I can join up some multiplayer with you.

If Raknet works across the Pacific then I wonder why I haven't seen any Russian players, don't they like their own game

Seriously guys, watch out for her. She's got some skill with the Yak-1b, that even I don't have with the plane. ;)

Well I haven't been able to get any flight time in because of work. I would try now, but my eyes are tired from 4 hours of over time at work (which has been the last 2 weeks). I'm probably going to go sleep in a minute anyway.

And she's pretty cool when it comes to games. She doesn't like all games I play, but since I introduced her to Lilya Litvak, and other Soviet female pilot aces, she's all about the Yak-1b and Yak-9T.

So I finally got the full version of the game last night.

Wow. That was so fun! Of course I did the training missions first to get my simulator mode. I have to say, playing in sim mode in the hurricane feels like hell! The office in that plane looks GREAT but the framework really blocks my view from everything. It took me a while to find the bomber in the training mission. I was actually chasing around a red clump on the map until I realized that the bomber was a flashing yellow dot.

I'm starting to get used to the fact that I have to use the R3 to look around, and I'm more able to keep my view on the enemy.

Any tips flying with a game pad? I feel using a HOTAS defeats the purpose of a console game.

I recommend aviator layout it is way easier to keep sight on enemy, bad news is that you have no brakes and target zoom

Yea.. it's weird. I'd fly with aviator if they had target zoom as triangle or something. Then square could be brakes, since neither button is used for some reason...

Hopefully that could be fixed in the update.

Anyway, tried my first couple of missions today. Exhilirating. But it's SO difficult to find enemies in the first place. I don't have an HD tv so when I look for 109's I notice the yellow wingtips first. As soon as I start encountering later 109s, it will be damn difficult to spot them until I'm close.

I use the map a lot but it will only give you a general feeling.

How do you all spot e/a ( enemy aircraft )? I suppose it just takes 'practise' :-P

yeah practice and using the map alot does it, but an hd tv sure doesnt hurt either... got so frustrated the other day that i wnet out and bought myself a 32" full hd tv and the difference is unreal... the patch should also help with spotting enemies from a distance.

Btw on the aviator layout, triangle is for bombs, square rockets, circle guns and x is ur trim

Defeats the purpose of a console game?

This setiment is the problem with console companies, publishers, developers, and some gamers.

Why should we be confined to playing these games with a gamepad? It has to be about the worst possible control method for flight sims, FPS, and RTS games. Gamepads and the rigid enforcement of using these pieces of crap in games like Halo mean, for me at least, that I get NO enjoyment playing an otherwise great game. If I could play Halo with full mouse support, I'd be playing that game for sure.

At least with driving sims they have enough sense to support wheels.

Seeing as how PC games are dying, if consoles take over and I'm forced to play games with a one size fits all approach regarding control interface - my desire to play games at all really will tank.

Maybe playing with a HOTAS defeats the purpose of a console game for YOU - it doesn't work when applied in a general sense.

I meant that it defeats the purpose of a console game for me. When I use sticks, I used them for PC, and I had a helluva a time. Using a stick on a PS3 makes me feel weird.

Many of us have been somewhat shamed by this game's abundance of historical flaws, and I'm only going to be completely comfortable when the largest of these flaws are fixed.

I, however, do enjoy the fact that this is a game, even with its monor quirks. Flying a Spitfire all the time, I don't notice the larger quirks. I enjoy the unlimited ammo and fuel because the only thing I want out a of a sim is good flight modeling, and the Spitfire IX is probably the most accurately modeled of all the planes right now.

So a stick, really is not that great for me. I love the feel of this being a smooth-running game I can play with my friends just for fun on my controller, on the comfort of my couch. When I feel like hardcore simming, trimming each surface manually, changing propeller pitch and working with the engine, I simply fire up IL-2 1946 and play there on my PC.

I have an hdtv and it's still not easy, but I like how you have to ID them by closing on them, I think it's realistic. Besides studying the shapes of the planes, some other clues for ID'ing a plane are how it's flying. How fast is it going, how tight are its turns, does it go vertical or stay more flat, stuff like that.

When you get to the later missions, you can't control your plane while you look at the map, I think it's to wean you off of using it. That is better for online, because there is some serious lag in the map in online fights, if the map shows your opponent on your 9, they might really be on your 6. Also the map never shows if they're high or low, so it's best to look.

Aviator layout is best for that currently. Not having a target camera isn't all that bad, the worst part is the rudder is freaking useless if you're using a fighter. They should have made L2 and R2 the rudder so it could be analog, and make L1 and R1 into "throttle up" and "throttle down" buttons instead. Having to hold the throttle at an exact level is pretty stupid. Also R2 and L2 make sense for being the rudder; they're like pedals, and they're at the bottom.

oh btw triangle is for bombs, and square is for missiles. Also X remains the trim button. Also sometimes if you hit start to bring up the map, you'll need to hit select to get to options.

Thanks. It's a good thing for me that I know what planes look like. I think flying a Spitfire makes it easier for me because all my wingmen have nice, elliptical wings, makingit that much easier to ID e/a.

I 100% agree on the controller setup. The fact that the rudder buttons are configured for full deflection and the fact that throttle has to be held is indeed pretty dumb.

If they fix that in the next patch (which I doubt) then I'd use the aviator layout for sure.

All that being said, I've had a blast on the first 7 missions I've played. 'Hornet's Nest' was not as hard as expected, though I initially got shot down by the swarm of 109's encountered after all Ju52's are destroyed. Shooting down the transports was fun though; I managed t fire off a single pair of rockets, blasting both Tantes to bits.

I finally got to the Siciliy missions, flying a Spitfire IX. For some reason though, my engine randomly shut off near the end of the mission. After destroying the ack batteries near the shoreline, I encountered several Macchis and Messerschmitts. On the tail of one of them, my engine simply quit, and I couldn't figure out why. I restarted the mission and it happened again. I wasn't using WEP, but I my engine did receive minor damage. Do the engines just quit after running for too long on damage? It's never happened in any other plane except for my Spitfire IX.

yes, usually. It's a simplified model in most of the mechanical areas. If the engine is any darker than faint pink, it's running on borrowed time. I think it lasts longer if you use the lowest RPM possible though, besides not using WEP.

so unless you've got multiple attempts, the engine is the worst place to get hit. If you avoid head-on attacks vs fighters or tail attacks vs bombers you can protect your engine to a degree. If you can get used to aviator layout, you can see when your opponent is about to shoot, and break or jink to avoid it.

edal the rules for your challenge match would be a good honor system type of thing for making limited ammo work in general, if and until MP is fixed. In dogfight mode, if a player is winchester then they shouldn't be allowed to crash unless they can successfully disengage. Something like, be out of range for maybe 1 or 2 minutes, then a crash would be allowed and of course opponent would be allowed to crash too for fairness. If both players run out of ammo then both respawn.

For everyone who's used this thread to add opponents, another thing that works is to just go the leaderboards, see who's active and try adding them. The more active they are, the more likely they'll be glad to have a new opponent. Also you can see anyone's language from their profile. I can get opponents pretty much all the time... you just have to have enough people added
