Have you rescued Johnson?
In one of the Sicily missions you get the option to rescue a squad mate. In order to do so, you have to land your plane alongside his on a field (which actually looks quite flat and nice for landing).
I did not have any problems landing my plane in the earlier missions that required it and I never flipped. But on this mission I never managed to land my plane smoothly without flipping over. Funnily enough after my 50th crash landing or so I swiched to the map for some reason to see that the secondary objective was already achieved - obviously a crash landing is sufficient. You should have seen that field, it was one big fire and flying over it reduced my framerate to felt 5 fps. Did you manage to land without flipping over with your joystick? I really don't wanna pause the game and switch to the joypad for landing. :( |
What mode you playing on? I did this on Realistic with my joystick.

BTW - funny thing I noticed: After a crash landing the respawned plane would have the gear up but the flaps still set to landing. |

Ye landed with a logitech force 3d pro - realistic mode with no landing brakes. Think I came to a stop in the next field so Johnson must have hauled ass over the hedge. Still managed to turn around and take off again. Took me 2 attempts . |

Just before the point it flips start firing the guns and keep the trigger held down. I find this slows the plane down and prevent's it flipping.

I flipped on the first 2 tries, but landed successfully on the 3rd. On that 3rd try, I came in at a 90 degree angle (south to north, I believe) from the first 2. Don't know if that made a difference or not.

I saved him once. But it was funny because, I was coming in to land near his Spitfire, but it was touch and go, so I came back around to do it again, and before I landed, I heard that guy saying that it was a tight squeeze or something like that? So I guess, making a touch and go landing can achieve getting him as well?

I managed to land there in sim mode, but after i picked him up i couldnt get my engine started again to take off.
Anybody knows what I`m doing wrong? Thanks in advance Greetz, The Straw |

I'm afraid there is no way to restart your engine. :( |
I haven't tried that mission but I don't seem to have the flip problem that others report. I just cut the throttle and pull back on the Aviator stick.

How would he fit the guy in there anyway? Wouldn't he then not be able to use the control column or pedals?

Similar stuff really happened with Hungarian pilots over Russia, here is the story:

I actually saved him completely by accident. Somehow I totally missed the radio message that he needed help, but I must have crashed into the ground near there during one of my poorly timed manuevers, 'cause it got counted. I didn't notice anything 'til I got the end of mission narration and the narrator described landing and picking up the pilot. I was like, "Wait, I didn't do that!" :-P
They actually show two pilots getting into the same fighter in the movie Battle of Britain. I think it was a Hurricane though and not a spit. (can't remember & I'm not at home, so I can't check.) It was during the RAF's evacuation of France. One of the pilots didn't have a working plane, so another pilot waved him over and they piled into the cockpit. Also, if two pilots could wedge into a 109, they could definitely fit in a Spit, since I'm pretty sure the Spit had a bigger cockpit. I once saw a video of a German ace (can't remember which one, but it was one of the big names) sitting in the cockpit of a Spitfire. His first comment was, "Roomy!" In that same show a British ace got to check out the cockpit of the 109, and he didn't like it at all, mainly because of that rediculously fat frame around the canopy. Does anyone know why the 109 had that and why it wasn't replaced with a bubble canopy or something later in the war? |
It was replaced later by a canopy design called the Galland Hood, based on suggestions by Gen. Adolf Galland. It had a lot less framing and the top was bulged out slightly to help vision.

I found that its easier to land if you use the land to the right side just behind his plane. The field over on the right side is much smoother and easier to land on. Then you can taxi over near him for the mission star and take off again.

The UK Daily Mail is reporting that Johnson has been killed in an incident involving a wheat thresher and an escaped circus monkey. Details are still pouring in. Please don't save Johnson only so that he can die tragically later. The family has suffered enough already.

I came in a bit hot on the landing and started desperately taxiing circles around the field trying to stop the plane (stick, no brakes). I finally got it to quit rolling about 5' from Johnsons plane, purely by chance. Couldn't have pulled up along side better if I'd tried, first attempt :) Bet I couldn't do it again either ;)

this may or may not help but i decided to make a tutorial on how to rescue him :D
Please turn your speakers up to max volume, as i saved the video with low volume. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTl_RwN7LTg |
