Achievements
 
I like the addition of the achievements, but do they have any bonuses or are they just there for bragging value?
If it's the latter then what's the point? There's plenty there to choose from but if they were created for that purpose, why are there none for achieving a no loss run?
If i make it through 50 battles without using magic, or it's counterpart rage, what do i get?
Seriously folks, these achievements that need to be grinded and your playstyle radically gimped to get, have the same feeling as medals without rewards.....
Why didn't they just expand the medals panel?

Anyone else got thoughts on this?

A lot of games have achievements for the sake of achievements like on the Playstation Network. That's the way it has always been as far as I know.

I don't see it as a major grind. Obviously some are easier to achieve than others, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

I got the 50 battles without magic easily because i'm a Viking/Warrior. I didn't HAVE any spells to cast! Haha.

The 50 battles without rage is semi-easy too since I am at the stage where I can easily kill without rage.

The hard ones are blitzing bosses in 15 rounds in Impossible mode.... especially if one is going for no-loss. But no-loss isn't a big deal now that gol and units are far more plentiful.

Anyway, do it in good fun. Don't kill yourself over the achievements. As a Warrior/Viking, I'm not going to do the "do 1M dmg with spellbook" achievement. :)

Hi ck! Nice to see one of the "Old School" still active on the forums! :cool:

I know most games have "achievements" now for whatever platform/network you're playing these days, but one of the things that attracted me to KB originally was it's 'indie' origins. And the fact that it allowed for a lot of different play styles.

In KB:TL there weren't even any medals, but we still made our own challenges and had a lot of fun doing it too. Who was it who came up with the "win the game on impossible-no losses-only using Imps challenge????

If the "achievements" aren't going to have any rewards, what's the point in someone else defining what they should be? As per my original post, why isn't there an achievement for beating the game with no losses?

I think it's just a general 'nice' achievement to "show off". Yeah, some games do have extra unlocked stuff with achievements but eh, I think I will live. It is sort of nifty to see who can do the 15 round boss kills.

I mean, I killed Ktahu in 6 rounds with Warrior in Impossible. It would be much easier if it was just an achievement. :)

Honestly, I'm more of a pragmatic player and no-loss was necessary in Impossible due to finite resources.

impy's crazy challenges was just that... crazy challenges. And I think now you can have MORE crazy challenges since the game is easier so you have more flexible options and can carefully increase difficulty while still making it possible. I think after we digest the game more we can start thinking of insane stuff.

Well, I guess with this latest installment, all those that were complaining about "kiting" will be very happy. It also seems that that by the next release/expansion, a no loss run on impossible will also be "impossible'.........:rolleyes:

I did a run through as far as Hades on Hard as Soothsayer just to get the hang of the new game and have just restarted on impossible for a no loss run. I'm using the "all units available in starting castle" mod but I've decided in fairness not to use any units that i wouldn't have had access to if i hadn't been able to kite and just stick with the spells available. Also given that you don't have access to those other areas,spells, exp, etc. your starting leadership and skills are way way lower! (You could get to Level 15-20 b4 and have 5k+ leadership)But it's turning out to be a lot of fun so I'm still OK with it all. In fairness, i also waited 3 days b4 starting as the benefits i've gained from the mod are/would be equivalent to about that time had kiting been available.

Thus far it seems to me that the old pet dragon skills are now mostly the new Rune magic tree and the Valkries are a mash of the old wives/partners. Kinda takes some of the 'strategic/RPG' aspect out of the game as you can swap them in and out as you please where as b4 once you got divorced it was all over........

Anyway, didn't really have a lot of time to keep in touch after KB:AP expansion with you all, so here's hoping i'll be able to keep you more updated this time around.

Also, just as a last thought, i don't remember any release of this game ever being as buggy as this one! Grrrrr!

I used to play WoW and I remember when the achieves were introduced, and that was after some other games came out with their own achievements. Now there is probably no game without it. The achievements give more reasons to replay the games, since is very unlikely you can do them all on the first run.

@travelingoz – idk, some players are very creative, they will come up with the solution that might be a bit exploitive BUT *legal* play in the sense (no mods/no cheats)

I think the Dev's are pissed that we 'broke' their game...... In TL, i could kite all the way to Demonis and back 2 or 3 quests after the tutorial. In AP, it was even easier to open almost the whole map......... Even the so called "immovable" guardians could be conned with practice. Now, you can fly so early but there's nowhere to fly to.......

I also see after the latest patch, the guard for the last Bombo mushroom is super hard to kite away.........

Being able to kite more easily is a good thing in my opinion. Makes things more flexible. Want to skip the 'trash' mobs and just do impossible mobs on the harder islands like me? Yup.

I like the flexibility of being able to add-replace companions. It was very frustrating to be forced to do things in a very rigid order.

e.g. I could never get back Jimmy, but he was super useful early on to give me more xp due to his slots, but I really want Moldok for orc build.

Or did I want the sharpshooter companion? I can't change my mind though, one build for the entire game!

Frankly, that sort of sucked and on top of that once you got some of the combinations, you didn't have a lot of enemy units left to use them on.

If they didn't want things "broken" they really really shouldn't have released the rune mage the way it was. :) Honestly, the amount of buffs they gave us elsewhere, I think the game is more fun.

Back in Armored Princess, the most damage I could do in a single stack attack (not ball of lightning) was close to 34K.

I'm going to bust that limit by quite a bit in the end and much sooner, when I can actually enjoy using / doing it.

I predict the game will have very very very fast runs possible now and without requiring an INSANE amount of luck and scanning for the 'right' items to drop in the right areas without insane kiting (Hey I was a pretty good kiter, but lets face it, it seemed really dumb but necessary :) )

Yeah Jimmy, it seems like they've taken/removed a lot of the options out of the game...at least in the early stages. They're making it look like you have more options now with a new "viking class" but actually your choices are much more limited.So it's much more linear now.

Remember they joy of finding Ogres or a Call Wind scroll on the first island before? Gone! Remember kiting the easy guy near the castle and getting to the Eastern Isles and finding 4 royal griffins in the pirate hut AND paladins in the tent on the beach too? Gone!

Remember.......never mind.

Don't get me wrong all... I'm still playing! I LOVE this game! Just wish we had/they'd give us a few more starting options.

Remember in TL before the 1st expansion when there were no reserve slots and you were going for a high score? That really was a 'strategic' thing.

When you only have 1 type/race of units available at start of game, what strategy is required in choosing your troops???????????

I never played TL.

You actually have bears, snakes, and spiders. While I failed to achieve pure 'no-loss', I got much closer by using the snakes (which I would normally never use from the eggs)

Also, if I wasn't forced to use the Vikings, I'd have missed out on some interested strategies. :)

Jotons! Split Sooths or Split Maidens? Slingers (I didn't use them early on since it was too easy to lose, but I might do it again). Berserkers as an insane damage beast, Jarls as shock troops that rival even knights.

I admit it is a little 'rail roaded' early on but later on you have tons of options since the game flattens out.

I agree about achievements, now they only look pretty and when you finish game you can make screenshot and that`s it they have no other use. And some of them are totally retarded - Heartless you need to lose 10.000 units ,and i read somewhere summoned units count toward it. WTF ? For trapper medal, summoned units arent counted, so why would they count for this ???
Other then being useless, they are just something you do no matter the gameplay :
- deal 1million dmg, no problem you`ll do it eventually
- complete at least one item set, this depends on your luck with random items in game
- gather 75 items in whole game, also doable.
- defeat 250 enemy, i guess you have to win at least that may battle before end of game (i read that there is around 700 battles in whole game so 250 is no problem
- collect 250 chests also a joke
But there art some that you wouldnt even think off without some guidance :
- win 25 battles in a row without replenishing your army
- win 50 battles without spells/rage. WHY ???? And then on other hand deal 500.000 dmg with spells and upgrade all Valkyries to 5th lvl. This achievements are contradicting each other
- defeat spider in 15 turns / defeat Loki in 10 turns, hard for ppl going no-loss. But in the end no loss is only personal choice.
Etc, etc...
If game have skills upgradeable, and medals, and spells, and rage ksills, wtf did they implement useless achievements for ????

How ? For freedom islands you had to defeat turtle, and for map from lucky James you had to defeat him (at least 12 lvl, since he was 15 and had big army), or buy it for 100K gold, also you must fight for it since it was impossible to gather that amount just running around (i think, not 100% sure). But after that yea, path to Demonis was open, and then again for Elven lands you had to free dwarf prince battle vs demon hero 18 lvl if i recall right.
And then came AP/CW and kiting aplenty :-) Hero 1st lvl scouting Reha and gathering free quests for 4000-6000exp without fighting, and returning to Debir with 20 lvl and full dragon army :-)))

I dont think players were so limited in start of TL, you start with access to Greenwort , Arlania, Verlon forest, and Marshan swamp and have available human , bunch of neutral some undead and alchemist(swamp) units so it was much better then WotN on start.

I find it weird to go from ingame achievements/medals with small benefits to having both ingame medals and more mainstream achievements with no ingame benefit and little overlap between. I get achievements about beating the game at the highest difficulty and such, but many of the others seem arbitrary to me. Not to mention spoilery and kinda confusing (thanks for telling me Guilford is a bad guy and that I'm gonna fight Eric again later on).

I think I stopped mid-way, used a Paladin instead (less leadership), never liked the Gorgunas. I don't think I considered stuff like Pygmy, just the straight +60 attack bonus (3X dmg) and whatever + dmg items I had. Definitely needed girl power for that build and close to 100% crit.

But, wow, that's impressive! I wonder how many you had?!?

I saw tread `highest crit` where some1 posted 300K crit with black knight + gorguna army. Blackies killing everything and in the end gorguna blood mark on some1, after which bk with 100+ attack did 300K crit.
So i planed 1 battle to see how high can i go, had 4000+ fairies , 3-6 dmg, +3 moral, and high attack from frenzy skill. After killing bunch of summoned plant stacks , i used blood mark and did that crit :-) But all in all it`s not really functional, because you need to focus all killing on 1 stack, and fairy army is great in huge numbers (around end of game). On other hand they are interesting to play with no retaliation :-)

I think this achiev is broken, I got it after the fight with the mage (right after spider fight) and the thing pops up, there is no way in hell I lost 10k units at that point, summons or otherwise.

Unless that counts as 10k HP all combine units lost, trolls and yountas or whatever they called, they have 700 plus of HP alone.

I think it counts summoned units too.... i got it fairly early in the game playing no loss.......:confused:

So heartless achievement is broken, surprise surprise. I would post it in bugs tread, if there isnt already like 70 pages of broken things in there.
Guess i`ll just go play TL-HoMM3 babies mod, and w8 at least 6 more months for devs to fix this mistake of game.

Oh, I’m sure that counts them, my point is 10k units? At that stage I lost only 1 bear to the Eric, some to the spider and the mage and since I had high level units there weren’t that many of them, my only summons were the lizards (didn’t get call of nature until later), well also used touch of loki, but seriously that can’t possibly count. So I was very surprised that I got that achiev so early in the game.

I'm guessing it counts kills even if you ressurected them. Or something along those lines.
