Modified AI in the Quick Missions

From this thread: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=31111 someone mentioned that you can change the AI settings to reduce the AI snap-rolls and their short attention span.

I went through all the quick missions and modified the AI according to the instructions here: http://www.bobgamehub.blogspot.com/2...-of-dover.html

I did not set every plane exactly the same (I put the general values I used below) and tried to follow the suggestions for the bombers as well. I only tested a couple of dogfights so it's certainly not perfect and it's probably got some errors (if you get better results or find errors just post them here and I will add it to the archive).

There are install instructions in the zip file (by default I set it up to work with JSGME for ease of testing/use, but it's simple to install by hand as well - just back up your originals!!!)

Here are the values I used (as of v0.5):
ACE 1
Skill 0.93 0.21 0.96 0.95 0.84 1 1 0.63
VETERAN 0.7
Skill 0.73 0.21 0.92 0.85 0.74 1 0.95 0.63
AVERAGE 0.3
Skill 0.32 0.21 0.87 0.75 0.74 0.95 0.90 0.53
ROOKIE 0
Skill 0.30 0.21 0.78 0.70 0.64 0.85 0.85 0.43
Bombers
Skill xx.x xx.x xx.x 0.30-0.70 0.74 1 0.95 0.93
Ground Attack
Skill xx.x xx.x xx.x xx.x 0.74 0.95 0.95 0.75

The following Quick missions are included:
006 - Dogfight - Even.mis
007 - Dogfight - Even - Low Level.mis
008 - Dogfight - Advantage Axis.mis
009 - Dogfight - Advantage Allies.mis
010 - Bomber Intercept - Channel.mis
011 - Bomber Intercept - Channel - Low Level.mis
012 - Bomber Intercept - Hawkindge.mis
013 - Bomber Intercept - London.mis
014 - Bomber Intercept - Calais.mis
015 - Free Hunt.mis
016 - Aerial Battle - Dover.mis
017 - Aerial Battle - Calais.mis
018 - Airfield Attack - Manston.mis
020 - British Attack - Airfield.mis
021 - British Attack - Column.mis
022 - British Attack - Bridge.mis
023 - German Attack - Airfield.mis
024 - German Attack - Column.mis
025 - German Attack - Bridge.mis

Changes:
v0.5 - Lowered the ADVANCED FLYING for all planes to 22 in an attempt to reduce the snap-roll behavior and slightly modified the TACTICS, BRAVERY, and DISCIPLINE values for all aircraft.
v0.4 - Changed bomber AI gunner values per trademe900's suggestion.
v0.3 - Started over with new files using different (fixed) values.
v0.2 - Fixed error in directory structure, modified BRAVERY values.
v0.1 - Original Release

Current version: Quick Missions - Modified AI v0.6.zip
Previous version: Quick Missions - Modified AI v0.5.zip

Thanks, still tweaking and testing. I upped the BRAVERY of everyone to 85 - 100 so they should not cut and run (and I realized I messed up the file structure so I fixed it :D) I will edit the original post to point to the new files....

trademe900 04-16-2012 11:29 PM

Awesome work. This is fantastic to have just even a band-aid to put on the AI for the time being. Using these skill sliders they are already so much better and fun to fight with.

One thing that is very important to remember is to set the bomber gunnery skills very low- the opposite from the fighters that need a high setting. This way you are able to dive through large formations with speed as tracers fly all over the sky and not be hit by impossible sniper shots, which is according to documentation and general consensus how it should be.

Also the discipline slider is a very potent tool to stop the behavior of blindly heading on to engage a bomber formation as a mass of enemy fighters charges straight at you.

Yes I did, good expansion on this topic! :-P

This sounds great...just to be clear, what 40 missions are these? Are they the stock QM and SM's that come with the game?

trademe900 04-16-2012 11:49 PM

Does anyone find that the tactics slider effects the F16 snap rolls at all?

Sorry, the 40 was just part of the name I was using for the folder. It is 19 of the SP Quick Missions that I modified (there are 24, but some are free flight so I don't think the AI matters on those).

I will edit the original post to be more specific. :D

Thanks, and thanks again for posting the examples in the other thread. :D

LcSummers 04-17-2012 06:38 AM

Great buddy!!!

Now we have working AIs. It was often frustrating in single missions what kind of manouvers the bombers were flying. It was more STAR WARS.

Great and thank you!!!!

LC

Gabelschwanz Teufel 04-17-2012 09:45 AM

Thank you!

Volksieg 04-17-2012 09:52 AM

Nice work! Looking forward to giving your AI adjustments a run. :)

EDIT: Just had a quick blast on the Free Hunt Quick mission.... ACHTUNG offline Luftwaffe pilots! England is no longer being defended by dribbling imbeciles. :D Nice work.

Ataros 04-17-2012 10:26 AM

Many thanks!

Buchon 04-17-2012 12:31 PM

Great thanks

furbs 04-17-2012 01:12 PM

While the AI shooting, awareness and aggressiveness are much better im still seeing the F16 barrel rolls.

Anyone else seeing this?

Buchon 04-17-2012 01:26 PM

Be warned, if you do a Verify Integrity of Cache in Steam the mission files will be replaced for the ones with the old AI.

Topo 04-17-2012 01:29 PM

I give a try, thank you!

smink1701 04-17-2012 02:09 PM

Thanks for this!!!

Question...when you load files do they just update the existing missions or add new modifyed ones on top of the existing QMs and SMs?

furbs 04-17-2012 02:31 PM

They update them, though i only got them to work when i put them in here...

Documents/1Csoftclub/CLOD/mission/Quick

The OP might want to update the readme.

smink1701 04-17-2012 02:44 PM

That's where I put them.

mazex 04-17-2012 02:57 PM

Great!

Please!!! Blacksix or Ilya, just pack these in the next patch, and modify the AI code according to below:

Code:

if (aiPilot.EvenThinkingAboutFullDeflectionInstantRoll == true)
{
  aiPilot.Punishment(pType.severe);
  return false;
}

Done! ;)

5./JG27.Farber 04-17-2012 03:33 PM

Dont forget guys, there are AI changes in this weeks patch and they may be more in the future. So with that in mind it maybe best to save your old missions to see what effect the new patch has had.

;)

I just lowered ADVANCED FLYING for all planes to 22 in an attempt to reduce the snap-roll behavior (uploaded v0.5).

Strike 04-17-2012 08:18 PM

thanks, definately spiced up the quick missions for my CloD withdrawal needs :P

trademe900 04-17-2012 09:35 PM

Is it just the advanced flying that effects the f16 snap rolls?

What does tactics slider do does anyone know?

This week's patch - ahh that has such a nice ring to it.
I am new to this sim - but not to IL2 - and frankly have held off getting deeper into it yet as I decided to just wait for the patch first - so I have not had to wait quite as long as many of you - but I am really looking forward to it after reading about it here.

I hope all goes as planned for all of you and it is mostly what you all wanted. My big decision will be whether to try the beta, or just wait for the final to be pushed out via Steam as I do not have previous flying to compare it to.

No601_Swallow 04-17-2012 09:49 PM

It almost makes me more annoyed! Credible AI behaviour is (more or less) built into the game and yet it was shipped with the Star Wars behaviour and the Barrel roll behaviour, etc, etc, because someone on the development team couldn't be bothered to spend an afternoon going through the quick missions to modify the sliders or (even better) spell it all out in the documentation (what documentation, I hear you ask...! And I thought the manual was actually well-written and amusing!).

I dunno. It's almost like they were deliberately trying to mar or sabotage their own achievement.

[Personally, I love the game, the graphics, the "sensation of flight", but like so many, me and my 40-odd squad-mates have given up on it until the game runs better and the co-op missions BECOME DOABLE - and by "doable", I don't mean that someone with a PhD in Rocket Science can program in co-op behaviour with "Scripts" (= algebra or differential equations for all of us in Tangmere Pilots. We've got lawyers and estate agents and teachers, but no "hackerz" to help us out). We're all crossing our fingers for the patch, because WE ALL REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT TO FLY IN THE CLOD SKIES!]

PS. I'm not apologising for the capital letters. So there.

Funny you should say that, didn't they sack a member on the original team for pretty much that reason?

No601_Swallow 04-17-2012 09:57 PM

Ha! Maybe, but whoever it was did a bloody good job...

Ha ha yes, but I guess we will never hear what really went on there. If I were Luthier, I wouldn't tell. Professional courtesy and all that.

Thanks for these updated missions Von Pilsner. I recently reinstalled COD and they're making the offline playing much better. Still haven't been online, waiting to see if the patch sorts that out before venturing onto a server.

Cheers man :)

fenrirswrath 04-18-2012 02:56 AM

How do I get the individual .mis files without using JSGME? Any chance of just getting the files themselves in a .rar or zip?

The .mis files are in the .zip file from the bottom of the 1st post. :D

fifi 04-21-2012 01:37 AM

Von Pilsner, is it only the "bob" folder i have to put in the COD JSGME folder, to get it work? Or with the other JSGME file also?
It doesn't work so far here when "bob" is enabled in JSGME... in my quick missions, all have desapeared...

Continu0 04-26-2012 02:32 PM

Tested today! Superb, had a lot of fun! Thanks for your work!

ChocsAway 04-26-2012 02:35 PM

Many thanks for this mod. The quick missions are much improved and far more challenging.

Cheers.

Sounds like the JSGME folder structure isn't quite right....

Try putting the .mis files directly into: '\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\parts\bob\mission\Quick\'

Plt Off JRB Meaker 04-26-2012 05:19 PM

Yeah, this is a great Mod,what I did was just let your mod replace the original files required in the 'quick'mission folder that require the much needed AI behaviour attention,it all works a treat.

This way you retain the pics in the menu.

Should I require to go back(which I don't),to the COD originals I have made a back up copy, plus you can always rebuild the game itself,as someone has posted earlier by clicking on 'Verify Integrity of Cache' in Steam.

Simples...........thanks very much Mr Pilsner, top job sir.

von Pilsner 04-27-2012 08:36 PM

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone... :D

I decided to dust off the old compiler and put the modifications into a program that will make the modifications to the mission file automatically (it makes backups too:)).

AITweak thread is here: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=31573

fifi 04-27-2012 10:52 PM

Sounds very interesting!

Though, is there a way to uninstall it? Just in case...

von Pilsner 04-28-2012 12:57 AM

It is just and .exe and a .bat file, just delete them to uninstall... :D

Stealth_Eagle 04-30-2012 10:53 PM

Can Mods move this to the FMB section so it's easier to find?

Thanks,
Eagle

furbs 05-01-2012 05:41 AM

Just as a word of encouragement, i just flew a offline quick mission and had my first believable dogfight with a AI spit!
No F-16 rolls and the blighter was performing some rolling scissors with me beautifully, trying to get home when damaged but still fighting back when attacked.

Very well done indeed!

JG5_emil 05-09-2012 03:55 PM

Definite improvement thanks!

Plt Off JRB Meaker 05-09-2012 04:24 PM

Hehe...........of course, without realising it,the poor AI in COD has made better virtual pilots of us:lol:

PotNoodles 05-13-2012 09:09 PM

Where do I put these files and do they delete the original ones? Should i save the originals? Also, if a new patch comes out will these files be overridden by new patch and cause problems? Should I put back the originals before any new patch?

Yes (so if you don't make backups it's not that big of a deal)

You don't have to, Steam will revert them to the originals when the official patch comes out.

:D

lonewulf 10-30-2012 12:55 PM

I appear to have mucked this up. I downloaded the compressed files and then extracted (couldn't work out how to copy them) to IC softclub blah blah "mission" and then when this didn't work to Program files (x86) and then to where my other clod directory is to be found and into "quick" but again nothing happened. Also, when you look under Quick Missions when playing single player there are no new duplicate missions in evidence.

Anyone able to tell me what I'm doing wrong?
