World of Planes - new website launch today
|
Looks interesting have to admit this game's starting to peak my interest a bit - i think it may surprise people at the fidelity certainly won't be IL21946 or clod realism but maybe along the lines of warbirds or aces high if the difficulties cranked up time(which is good enough for me) will tell and it's free so nothing to lose trying it, there's also a bit in the FAQ which is strongly hinting that world of planes may be expanding into land and naval combat as well can't link it websites not working for me but will try later if it's working again :p
latest alpha tester vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5N1pxOdHBs FAQ - http://worldofplanesgame.com/en/game/faq/#q-16 "You must know that Wargaming.net is publishing a game very similar to World of Planes. What is the most important feature that differentiates your game from theirs? Of course we know this. (We’ll point out that we started to work on our project and announced it long before them). So that’s Wargaming who should be asked why they chose such a similar name. Planning to offer realistic massive battles we’ve never been going to limit our project to the skies. Sooner or later War Thunder MMO will offer a full-scale action for air, land and sea vehicles to fight together. Using our rich experience in aviasim games development we are going to make our project attractive to a wide gaming audience. War Thunder: World of Planes features include: • Varied PvP-experiences set in full-scale combat missions • Multiple settings options allow advanced virtual pilots and beginners to enjoy playing the game together • Rich PvE content: dynamic campaigns, standalone missions, mission editor, and much more for single-player and cooperative gameplay • Impressive diversity includes detailed models of planes and their cockpits, as well as tanks and ships • Astonishing graphics, authentic sound effects, and beautiful music So, World of Planes is only the beginning of the exciting path to huge multiplayer universe of War Thunder." |
I am pretty pumped for this game actually. Il2 has always been a 'survey' sim and honestly, Wings of Prey in sim mode feels as 'authentic' as 1946 to me.
Most of the complaints were ugly green-filter(now seemingly removed), lack of landing/taking off (already patched in the latest version of Wings of Prey it seems), no full mission editor (Will be in World of Planes), performance data(WoP is getting there). We'll see how this iteration will fare. Gaijin's record has proved that they release at least very playable and polished product. |
One thing still bugs me about World of Planes is that they need to stop crushing the darker part of the image. The cockpit instruments are barely visible and it's a bright day!

yep last i checked they were using the Free 2 Play model ala world of tanks fingers crossed it's not changed.
|
Good to see the progress!
It will bring many new players to Il-2 via WoT >> WoWP >> WoP >> Il-2 Battle of Britain http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=8Kzrt_-o5IA If they merge air, ground and sea action it can be fun. |
S!
Depending how you implement F2P. In World Of Tanks it is more or less Pay2Win as with gold you can get XP converted and you gain more of it with a Premium account etc. So really depends how Gaijin will work it out..is it a true F2P or a P2W. |
VERY interesting indeed, long live the genre
funny how these guys seem to be getting ahead with what CLoD project was about; just imagine if Gaijin were to join efforts with CLoD team... |

i thought WoWP would 'only' be.This WoT brother i will download and play some few times (as i did with WoT), but it has few of a simulation in it for me ;) WoP, i counted more like a IL2 classic with better graphics. But with version 4.11 most propably IL2 is still ahead in kind of beeing a simulation. |

This one World of Planes comes from the Gaijin which has done IL-2: Birds/Wings of Prey. So no combined arms merging opportunities available there. |
yeh i've just had another look.
As far as i know it was/will be free to play used to say it on the old website and a quick google search says it was advertised as being free to play - now after looking through the new website there's no mention of it being F2P anymore but that doesn't mean it won't be as a few areas don't seem to be completed yet. might pop the question on their forums. edit : looks like it is still F2P no specifics though i'm assuming WOT style F2P linky - http://forum.gaijinent.com/index.php...-restrictions/ |
Nevertheless, we ww2 era warbirds online simmers and buffs are in treat in the future having so many new sims enter to the market.
|
I'm glad they changed he name up a bit. It was so confusing having World of Planes AND a World of Warplanes.
This actually looks pretty cool to me if they can do a few things: 1) Larger maps than WoP. It would be a shame to have these air, land, sea battles going on on very small maps. 2) More people online per server. If they want giant land, air, and sea battles we will need more than 24 people online per server. 3) A flight model/damage model at least equal to IL2 '46. I'm sure this will never be as hardcore as CloD, but at least give us some "hardcore/full real" servers at least equal to old IL2 series. 4) remove the darkened edges of the screen. Yes the green filter is gone but those dark edges bother me almost just as much. Maybe only have them when you are getting fired on? Sort of like to simulate being supressed? And then they can introduce a rpg element and make you less supressed to things the higher rank you are with more experience. But game looks great! Graphics are awesome, it will run good on most systems as WoP has proven, and the plane list looks pretty sweet. I hope the B17 and the Catalina are flyable I love flying the not so popular planes. |
The vignetting (dark corners) can be disabled via graphics options.
|
So how much realism can we expect from this? Something like IL2 1946 (full switch/full real), or can you upgrade your plane with all sorts of ridiculous boosters and other advantages?
It looks pretty good, and if the FMs are alright I'll add it to the collection fore sure. |

Actually they plan on doing combined elements in the future. The second post in this thread quoted Gaijin as saying such. I believe its in the FAQs somewhere on the forums and whatnot over at Gaijin. Not trying to be rude, just letting you know. |

I thank you Sir for these news! :) |
I absolutely have no idea how Gaijin will handle their F2P model - they've been awfully quiet about it. I suspect they are still figuring it out as it's pretty tricky.
They are positioning themselves as more 'authentic' against World of Warplanes, but they must also be user friendly enough to attract newbies. If they are going to have bolster packs, I'd imagine it'd have more to do with pilot stats for sim mode (few more seconds before black/red out, steadier eyes against the eye sight), better weapon/ammo load out, more plane sets(like RoF), and map access. |
i'm expecting something along the lines of 1946 full switch but with a very simplified CEM, i.e no prop pitch, limited overheat, maybe a slightly more forgiving FM but i'm
definitely expecting stalls and spins and blackouts redouts, realistic ammo loads and convergence settings. The FM on wings of prey wasn't too bad on full switch so it might be similar and thats what i'm expecting nothing as complicated as 1946 or clod but good enough to give me a challenge. takeoffs and landings are a maybe - this is a descendant of wings of prey so it's a possibility but i'm not expecting it but it might be map dependant (see pacific video i posted earlier) depending on difficulty no externals Track ir support has already been mentioned on the website. By the looks of it their trying to stick to historic planes so you buy a spit and you start off with what would essentially be a spit mk1 and the upgrades you buy increase the mark numbers, maybe you'd buy a CSP and turn it into a Mk1a, the next engine would turn it into the equivalent of a MkII etc etc as for silly upgrades like Afterburners etc no idea will have to wait for the beta. But i'm more inclined to agree with recoil they might be pilot based improved vision etc. I do highly recommend reading through the FAQ's there's a lot of info in there worth a look at. http://worldofplanesgame.com/en/game/faq/ |
I seriously doubt there will be such things as "boosterpacks" or "laserguided missiles" (if you will). Will probably be like WoT, different and premium loadouts, engine upgrades, weight reduction via better radio equipment etc. It won't be 100% accurate or maybe even 50% accurate ;) but StarWars it will be.....not...Yoda says!
|
What this game needs to be a winner, is high number of players allowed per server and large enough maps to encurage strategic playing.
They would get a lot of players that got tired with Aces High. |
I just read the FAQ. Sounds pretty promising. Real time ground force movement and an ongoing war is what I wanted IL2 to always have.
The list of flyable planes sounds pretty impressive. Especially the big 4 engine bombers we never had in IL2. Servers limited to only 32 people though, and map size 65km x 65km? Is that large? How does that compare to Cliffs of Dover's map? |

Certainly looks interesting. Does anyone know how new aircraft compare price-wise to other sims like Rise of Flight?
|
65x65 km maps sounds like gangbang in a barrel. ;)
|
i tried to watch a video they have on Youtube, but they ruined it with music,, stop putting music in videos,, I wanted to hear the game sounds,,,
since I didn't actually hear the game, I only saw the video.. I was reading the FAQ, and when they say 'we are making it balanced' means, like what IL-2 did, if one side feels thier plane is getting killed too much they will dumb down the better planes.. |
The FAQ sounds pretty interesting. They already have over 100 flyable planes which is impressive. Some being pretty rare or never flyable in recent ww2 sims (b-17 I'm looking forward too). No doubt not as detailed as CloD, but still it looks like fun.
Also the real time ground forces moving sounds very interesting to me. As well as the gameplay mode that has an ongoing war. Plus this could be a fun sim to get your friends into pc flight sims. It's free, runs great on mac or pc (unheard of for a combat sim). My friends aren't as hardcore when it comes to realism and complex CEM so this could be a great 'gateway drug' into the world of Cliffs of Dover engine management and flight models. |

The cockpit sucks, but the game imho is great, maybe I have to test it |
I fear it will be kind of arcadish like WoP.
They adress that game to the mass not to simulation freaks, as they need to gain money with upgrades or maybe additional planes or advertisement. This cant be reached, with few players that love simulation. Probably the counterpart of WoT, which is also very arcadish. But well, maybe i am wrong. |
I bet they will have a "full real" servers available for people like us who like no icons, locked cockpit, full CEM and flight model.
Sure the CEM, damage model, flight model won't be as detailed or in depth as CloD, but my guess is it will fly and handle similar to IL2 46 which I'm fine with. I will definately give it a try. |
Ive downloaded the DX9 benchmark test and signed up for the beta.
It looks pretty nice for a DX9 Alpha! Probably will be slightly more complex than WoP on full switch, so it will likely play like a slightly dumbed down IL2'46 with more planes and hugely improved graphics. Im fine with that and the smaller maps, I dont have the time I used to, so going in for a quick mission or "gang bang" with some nice eye candy isn't such a bad thing! The overall game play is what will make the game or not! ;) I get 34FPS avg with my temporary 8800Ultra with everything on maximum at 1920x1080 and 36FPS with very high. Just shows what a beast of a card the ol' 8800 Ultra was! |
