uncheck read only

Cod has been stuttering like crazy and has had at least a fifty percent drop in fps since last beta but no complaints here because it has to be me, my setup or something I'm missing. Well I found my problem launcher exe./ properties / read only box was checked. I unchecked it and WOW games running great better then last patch. Hope this helps someone. Edit: Runs better but does not look better, someone got happy with the contrast

Why would an executable need anything other than "read only" permission?

NedLynch 10-08-2011 01:23 AM

It's always been unchecked for me anyways, hmmmm....

machoo 10-08-2011 01:42 AM

Yeah me too .

Hunden 10-08-2011 03:04 AM

Don't know the answer to that all I know is I have been stuttering and lagging. I uncheck read only box and I'm running smooth now.

NedLynch 10-08-2011 05:15 AM

Well, I am happy for you, seriously. You can actually get some fun out of flying now. Maybe others who read this will check if they have a read-only turned on in the launcher properties.
I so far never had problems with stutters, luckyly.

You leave it on and you can't overwrite it. So when unrar'ing the patch the .exe is not updated and you're stuck with the old one. Some unpackers don't warn about that.

unchecked for me also..

Whiski 10-08-2011 01:46 PM

It was checked for me.

So, at 2:45am (the time at which I read the post) I unchecked it. Jumped into the ATAG server and flew a 109 E-3. I really was very tired at this point, but I did not notice much improvement for stuttering. I still got those 1-2 second pauses (not sure if this may be connected to AI spawning, people spawning or spawning in with custom skins).

I will try again this morning and see what plays out and report back.

Cheers!

Yeah Whisky I think that's not 'real' stuttering, that's just a new flight of Planes, what I count as stuttering is when you get a little stutter every 5 seconds or so, Like RoF for a period of time.

I have those freezes as I like to call them a couple of times in an MP mission, but it goes away after half a second, but it's still annoying ;)

Hmmm, that would bear out what Tintifaxl stated above. You might get a benefit from copying the latest launcher.exe from the beta #2 patch over the launcher.exe file that you unchecked "read only".

It makes me wonder if other files likewise are "read only" that don't get changed (ie copied over) when a new beta is applied. We seem to get a lot of varying observations & complaints from forum members with each new beta release that may not be due entirely to different PC systems.

Interesting point Snapper. I forgot to mention once I unchecked the read only option, I did receive a message asking "Apply to all folders and sub-folders" to which I replied yes.

The only stutters I get are the ones from spawning a/c because they are about 1-2 seconds long, other than that I get smooth performance on mostly medium settings except for model, damage decals, visual effects and texture which are all on high.

I guess I could reinstall the beta and core patch again over the now unchecked read only files and folders to see if I get any performance effect. I highly doubt I will find any difference though, even read only files are replaced in updates to various applications.

If I am not mistaken, read only just restricts the user from editing or changing the file manually by mistake. So in order to provide security from corrupting your files they add the Read Only option for advanced users to edit the files. Just my thought and I may be mistaken about that.

Cheers

Sounds like you've got it well-covered, Whiskey.

I think we all get the short pauses in MP, probably by a new player spawning. I had another screen freeze-up today in MP while taking off from Hawkinge - seemed to be a launcher.exe fault. Had to exit via Task Manager. Will send the .cpp dump file (if any) to 1C with a full description. Our work never ends..... ;)

Whiski 10-09-2011 02:40 PM

Well, I did as I said. Reinstalled it over unchecked read only, after I validated my game files to reset to 1.02.

I found no difference in performance or visual effect. Once I was done reinstalling, the files were again checked to read only. I then recorded (using Fraps and EVGA precision ) both flights with checked and unchecked read only files, with an exact result in both performance and visual. FPS 34: AVG. 48: Max. 60. Precision recorded no more or less usage on the GPU.

Myth......busted ;)

Valiant effort though OP. Keep looking.

CHEERS!

I wonder If having 2 il2 folders each one with a different beta version had any thing to do with it ?
