What aviation related hobbies do you have?

Hi guys.

What aviation related hobbies do you have? Though it would be a good thread to get a little background on us away from BoP :)

For me, its collecting diecast models of WW2 planes and more recently i tried my hand at making a grass stand for them to sit upon.

Here's some of my collection. Sorry for the poor quality of some pics, i had to use the iphone for some of them.

My two Hurricanes (1:32 scale)

These are metal diecasts Scotty, they are already built and painted in the box. Very nice ones too Foz, the Lanc and Hallifax 8)

I used to make the model aircraft. Mine were pretty good but nothing compared to what some people can do. My hobby has since turned into just lurking on the britmodeller.com forum at the amazing photos of finished models and works in progress threads.

Sweet. It's a good thing stuff like that isn't readily available for me... I'd be awfully poor by now. I just about drooled over the P-38 and P-51 models.

I do have a few Maisto Tailwinds. They're cheap and found in the toy section, but they're pretty detailed for what they are. Have a box full of them somewhere. I just spotted them at the store recently and started looking for new ones. The newest one I have is a Me.262 while I'm looking pretty hard for the Spitfire. It annoys me that they don't make a P-51, Bf-109, or a lot of other historic warbirds. Shoot... I have a P-61 Black Widow in that box I can't find. They make the obscure P-61 but not the basics...

At weekends I get to play with these amongst others:

They sound interesting mate, you'll have to get some pics up, let me have a butchers (look) or possibly a link?

The P51/P38's are popular, i only have the 3 mustangs but theirs alot moreout their and they look incredible. Petit 2nd is currently on her way to me, a great looking P51.

FOZ_1983 09-13-2011 03:54 PM

Gilly...

Get yourself a Hurricane or Spitfire and i'll gladly pop up daily to clean it :D

And sit in the cockpit and act like an 8 year old haha.

Neat thread Foz, thanks.

Aviation is like many other “hobbies”, it’s all fun and games until you try to make a living at it :-P and for good time “sport” flying you really can’t beat soaring. I currently “work” part time as a tow pilot for a local soaring operation, here’s a few pics:

The first one is me dragging a big 2-place Caproni sailplane up into lift. The second is me returning to the field after a tow, and if you zoom in real close you can almost see me smilin' :) The third pic is the "grid" of sailplanes lined up during our labor day contest, and the last pic is the club's open cockpit 1-26, possibly the coolest thing ever invented by anyone  I call the last plane "Snoopy" 'cause someone said I looked like I was going up to fight the Red Baron when I took off in it LoL.

FOZ_1983 09-13-2011 06:14 PM

Great stuff guys!! Thanks for posting!!

Dave - yeah i knew you would of taken that bloody Spitfire haha, can't blame you though as she's a beauty. Do like the sound of a griffon.

Ze Jams - Great looing planes mate, i like the shot of the Spit from the front!! Look superb.

Lion - Great pics, that little plane of yours looks like a crop duster haha. Seems enjoyable though, may give it a try one day.

Good eye Foz! The tow plane is a crop duster, or at least it used to be. It's a Piper PA-25 Pawnee with the chemical hopper removed and a tail hook added. Our soaring club has 3 of them and each one is older than I am. They make great tow planes and are loads o' fun to fly

Here's one of the boss lady dragging up some hot glass on contest day:

FOZ_1983 09-13-2011 07:26 PM

Haha brilliant!! Love it.

Great pics though, looks like great fun.

A couple more of mine here

My little babies...

Cool thread Foz, and what an impressing collection of Hurries!

I've set my mind of building up a little fighter-collection myself. The basic idea is to collect a small # of significant warbirds to illustrate a tiny bit of the development they went through in just a few short years, and the special purpose and task they were designed to cover.

From left to right in the vid you see a mkVb, a mkIX, a mkXIV, P51B, P51D-5, E3, F4 and a A-5. In back there is a V1 that came with the mkXIV.
(Notice the markings on the mkXIV is the same as the spit in BoP/DW-D. A cool coincidense...) Set the vid at highest resolution.

Great collection their mate, loving the Spits you have though you do need a couple of Hurricanes ;)

The P51's looks great to, im not a huge fan of the "B" but the D looks great. I find though that you always find another diecast to add to the collection. The detail in them is superb.

Thanks for sharing :D

Where did you get the display cabinet if you don't mind me asking?

McQ59 09-13-2011 09:26 PM

Thanks Foz. Indeed I need a Hurry!
The cabinet used to contain whisky-, redwine- and cognacglasses. I threw them out :-)
Space is a headache you know...

Yup i do :) one that took part in the Amiens raid. Its one of the ones that are boxed up real good though and is screwed to a base so was just being lazy really and didnt want to start unscrewing things haha. Its the same with another Spit i have, a Brian Lane Spitfire from the BoB.

Haha, they have stolen enough of my hard earned cash (which i dont get paid alot of i might add!!) but they look good and i enjoy the searching side of it trying to find a bargain.

You can pick up some for as little as £10, then others of the same scale that could go over £100! :(

U2RATTLEHUM 09-15-2011 05:13 AM

No doubt the best collection I ever seen. Do you share them at expos? If not you should. Thanks for sharing

olife 09-15-2011 04:48 PM

very nice thread foz!!!
and very nice collection!!!fantastic!! ,your corsair "3" withe must be the plane of enseign FREDERICK J.STREIG of VF17 ,in 1944 ,i think.strangly in 1944 ,the streig's corsair had still the red lines around the US nationality roundels,in fact these red lines were painted during a short time in a middle of 1943,but quickly suppressed because of the resemblence with the japanese HINOMARU.
the 29 must be the plane of IRA C.KEPFORD ,VF17 too ,bougainville ,january 1944.

Thank you for your kind words Olife :D

Your knowledge of the Corsairs is very good!! Your correct on both counts on who they belong to.

As for "3" it was the corsair that he (Frederick Streig) used when he was in combat over Rabaul in January 1944. Your right, it is strange how the red lines are still present as i think (don't quote me) they were stopped being used in mid/late 43??
