new ROF patch out early
 

While we wait in anticipation for the (possible) Friday CLOD patch, for those interested the new ROF patch is out now, a day earlier than expected :)

Well the possible friday patch will be just a beta...

Also the ROF have some real incentives to releasing a patch, even if its not ready (not saying that this is the case at all, just a possible scenario) because they have the potential to make some good amount of money on it...While im pretty sure that their are preorders, many would still wait till its released before buying...So yea the 777 people have REAL incentives to getting patches out as early as possible for better or worse...

Not saying if this is a good or bad thing overall or that the 1C should adopt it, or not , but it is one possible business model, and in time the consumers will determine (assuming free market principles are at play) what becomes the norm or standard...

I think it was a brave decision to give the main base sim away for free with ROF, it means they have to keep knocking out regular new content that people really want. I know there were hundreds of WW1 planes made many had very short lives such was the pace of technical development, but i do wonder how far people are willing to go. If CLOD adopts the same business model ( difficult if there's to be both map and plane SDKs) then the base sim has to be well and truely sorted out, and I for one hope that happens and they have great success. I've supported ROF a lot having now bought everything including the latest Spad, and Im just as willing to do the same for CLOD given the chance!

Brave decision or one bourne out of necessity to draw in potential new customers to a dwindling market? After a rocky start RoF has really matured well and I don't mind buying the additional content, like you I've bought everything to date and would be willing to do the same if CLOD went the same way even though it would probably make it the most expensive sim to date - even beating my current iRacing addiction.

Well everything's relative, I recently contemplated getting into RC planes/ helicopters, but started to think I could spend easily more than my total spend on ROF and wreck it in an instant, it seems only a matter of time that you get a wreck whether from your own skill running out or a failure of a component, it happens to the best. After that realisation I felt ROF and CLOD were reatively meagre outlays for the time I spend with them.

iRacing is another successful model and not cheap either, my son's into it and circuits and car models soon add up, plus its a subscription, but I guess sim racing has a far bigger following than combat flight simming, so its more likely to be viable the way they market it.

i will never understand why post here infos about ROF..... ROF don't have any dedicated server?

if i want have a drink i don't go to the drugstore.....

if ROF was an 1C game i understand that you speak here... but.. well if you want to speak about this crappy game it is ok... but for me it is not the place...

There are several of us here who also fly ROF (in my case I flew ROF as my first sim, now CloD is my second). At times CloD is discussed in the ROF forums, too.

A flight sim, try it. it is free to play, if you don't like it, you can just delete it. Cost you nothing. Only costs if you buy extra planes.
But this is the Clod forum and we should keep our chats about Clod and not the fantasitc, beautifully made RoF, with photo realistic terrain, stunning flight models and massive online wars :grin::grin::grin:

Well if its true that the guy sorting CLOD's sound is the same guy who did ROF's sound (I've seen this mentioned a few times on this forum but never saw the original post that started it so dont know if its true), then IF TRUE, we have some sort of unbilical linking the sims however small. Jason supports CLOD, we flight simmers are a small community and ROF and CLOD need all the support we can give then, else they will fall by the wayside.

Not sure if it's just me, but it's about the slowest paqtch down load I've had!

The worst news is that RoF now stutters very badly after this new patch.

Rumour has it that it's only affecting ATI card users, but time will tell.

Without altering any in-game or card settings, my RoF now stutters like CoD.

No! No! No! and thrice No!!

you are thinking about Over Flanders Field (OFF), that is a MOD for a MS game.

RoF has its own engine-even when it was planed in the very far past to be based on the IL2 engine.

No you are talking about Over Falnder Field OFF for short. Nice game as well. It is not free but if you are interested in the era it is well worth the purchase as well.

Honestly people who complain about rivalry between flight sims should realise we are a very small segment (purchasing power) of the gaming community.

No. The mod is called Over Flanders Fields IIRC and is very popular.

Could someone move this thread to Pilot's Lounge please. There is a thread already with RoF news there. It is really offtopic in the main CloD forum section imo. Pilots' interests other than CloD are discussed in the Lounge usually.

Well, I always had a silent hope that the Rise and the Cliffs communities would eventually merge into one big community. I know it will probably never happen but it's nice to see that the devs of both sims are friends and that Jason himself asked us on RoF forums to support both products.

As far as I understood the reason is trying to fix crossfire and not having ATI/AMD eager to communicate on the subject as openly as nVidia.

SLI/Crossfire had some issues some time ago. But I may be wrong, did not read all the replies.

A hotfix will probably solve it.

no stuttering here...and it usually get fixed with reinstall with latest full version of the game...

Yes I saw your post on the RoF forum. I'd like to see if the re-install cures it for other people first, as if I try that and it's just the same I'll be livid! :)

According to the patch release notes SLI should be running smoother in ROF!

Hopefully they'll 'respond' to the COD team. If SLI starts working for COD I foresee a trip to the graphics card shop!

Yes, this is what I mean. SLI/nVidea problems are fixed and ATI/Crosfire are not yet 100% fixed.

777 does not recommend SLI/Crossfire setup anyway IIRC.

Years ago when the game was still in development, the RoF team released a free Fokker Dr1 for FSX as a promotional piece. Maybe that is what you are recalling.

When I upgrade ROF it ran a DirectX update.

Since then I have got a lot more stuttering in COD! :(

Try disabling HDR in RoF if you have ATI.

They had to include the latest update but just in case you can download the latest DX redist at MS site.

You're mistaken, ROF is fantastic. As will COD be given a bit of time. I support both sims, through buying the Collector's Edition of ROF (when it first came out), and by buying each ROF update a/c as it is released. Each his own, and what's wrong with having a small thread about ROF here if a majority of players own both (or more) sims. There are threads about COD on the ROF forum!

First of all discussions and comparisons of different sims are always pretty interesting and valid in my opinion.

As for ROF being a crappy sim, well...you obviously haven't played it! :rolleyes:

If you don't like ROF then some constructive criticism might be better as opposed to "crap" which is a tad sweeping and uninformative wouldn't you say?

Do you mean "crap" in comparison to Clod? If so you may be somewhat deluded. I have high hopes for clod but it is obvious that ROF as a sim is way ahead in every respect at this time. Hopefully that will change in time.

hmmm must have lucked out then I patched up 2 days ago and haven't seen any difference :) hope they fix this for all that were effected. Maybe for single card ATI users only? LOL corssfire finally came in handy for once .. :)

I like the bump mapping of the clod landscape. It's the one advantage that it has over the curent build of RoF maps. It's in the works though, so they should compare pretty closely soon.

Honest question: does RoF look "more real" to you guys that fly it regularly?

I like the way it looks, but i always have a feeling that i'm flying inside a vintage comic book or something: it seems more "artistic" and less "real world" for lack of a better word.

Again, i'm not saying it doesn't look pretty, i just think the colour selection is a bit on the "watching a movie/reading an illustrated book about WWI" side.

Most screenshots are done with post effects, whose include desaturation. Disabling post effects or lowering desaturation manually helps with muted colors.

I agree Blackdog it has a different look to it, with my ENB mod it feels to me im in "sort of ww1 movie in my head" and in some ways its less "real" but it makes up for that with much more believable clouds and landscapes that look more lifelike and organic that its light years ahead of CLOD for immersion and feeling of being in a real world(even if its not this real world)...does that make sense?

Though with the patch tomorrow and further patches CLOD will catch up and take over i hope, i think ROF is great but ww1 is not really my bag.

NP, If you have a Nvidia card you need "Nvidia inspector" to get rid of the horizon shimmer.

Not just for ground looks.. but the sky too.. The clouds in RoF are much better than the ones in CoD.. The CoD ball clouds look like IL-2 clouds from 8 years ago (read no improvment). I hope the next CoD patch fixes some of that.

But the big thing that RoF does way.. Way.. WAY better than CoD is the 'dots at a distance'. In CoD the dots look.. well like dots.. Where as in RoF they actully have a little bit of a plane outline to them. Which to be fair is a recent addition to RoF. One of my biggest complaints of RoF was it didnt do any LOD transtions to dots.. but a patch or two ago and RoF fixxed that.. Now they have the best LOD transitions of any sim I have seen
