The mustache issue

I remember a while back during development there were several screens posted showing pilots both with and without mustaches.

However, I don't think this feature has been given the attention it deserves. I think a good feature would be to have a checkbox for "Pilot mustache" because having a mustached "self-pilot" image or that of a bogey can be essential to creating an immersive environment.

Then again, I do not always fancy mustaches in-game. Others I have talked to in the community agree. I propose that perhaps some sort of in-game mustache toggle on-off command be developed. There could also be an icon showing whether or not you have mustaches enabled near the throttle quadrant display, it could be perhaps a mustache over your engine controls, or just beside them if that is too distracting. It most certainly could be too distracting, too, because mustaches are so awesome.

But not always.

Chuck Norris who?! Oleg Maddox had moustache!!

JG52Uther 07-29-2011 01:27 PM

Oleg shaved his off before release so he could deny all knowledge! ;)

Feathered_IV 07-29-2011 01:51 PM

I'm told that Oleg's moustache was a placeholder, for the beard he intended to grow.

Uther - while I would firmly support 3rd party modding to create the means of that end, I wouldn't endorse it for online play or inclusion in the stock game version. Some would consider it quite an unfair advantage.

Facial hair was at times paramount to determining which way an air battle might sway.

Perhaps it should be a difficulty option.

JG52Uther 07-29-2011 02:11 PM

Aha the old modding argument! I will counter argue that having a full beard blowing back in your face at the wrong moment in combat would be a disadvantage!

SpecialCake 07-29-2011 02:17 PM

Yes but we are simulating playing with the real conditions of the era, flying planes and using equipment that was available at the time, aren't we?

I believe any such person of immense facial hair would be using the standard issue beardlock and other facial hair restraining equipment, given to pilots on both sides (albeit in different forms) as standard-issue for every major theater of cornflict.

JG52Uther 07-29-2011 02:36 PM

Standard issue LW mustache in WW2, with specially modded curls that when blown back fit round your headphones.

Well played, sir.

Who was the cartoon character that had a similar mustache? I remember when he got an explosion to the face, his mustache would appear frazzled thereafter, upon his blackened face.

Mustaches need DMs too.

Thats the LW bomber crew mustache mate, specially designed so you can press various important buttons without taking your hands off the controls.
Ingame this will only work if you have anthropomorphic controls enabled.

Yes Yes..in combat the left side moves over to his eye and doubles up as a tiny gun sight...be sure

retrojet 07-29-2011 04:18 PM

The sad part is that somewhere out there is a big whiner who actually feels that the lack of optional mustaches is a big deal and should be given priority.
