New pilot signing up
Hi guys
After 2 months of umming and ahhing I have taken the plunge and am downloading the sim on steam. I am aware of the many issues but as I’ve been beta testing DCS:A-10 for months before release, (and after ;)), I’m not easily put off, especially as there aren’t exactly many devs working on the WW2 niche these days, I figure my £30 can help the cause and get the devs a few beers to keep them going! I fly DCS: A-10 these days and hang around the SIMHQ & ED forums, (and now here), but used to play around with IL-2 back in the pacific fighters days, nothing serious as I had a crappy joystick back then. Now I’m full kitted up and raring to get back to some seat of the pants flying. (and giving Fritz a taste of Tommy Steele) I fly MP when I can and am looking forward to having my arse handed to me until I get the hang of air combat without a F-16’s radar or AIM-120 missiles, (or a GAU-8 for that matter). I’m a pretty easy going guy and am always up for a debate and a laugh, but have little time for trolls or those without a sense of humour. Anyways, I hope this forum has a decent search function otherwise I will be hassling you guys with daft question for the next few weeks! See you in the skies. Coolts |
Welcome aboard! Make sure you leave your own opinions at the door though, some people here are confused as to what is whining and what is an opinion that differs from their own;). Seriously though, a lot of nice and (sim) passionate people here.

1c forums rule number one: Moderators do not tolerate opinions that do not comply with their rosy picture of the forums. If you have any bad thoughts write them in a letter and then burn it. Do not post it here. The mods will come down on you like a fat girl on a cake.

When DCS:A-10c came out there were loads of bugs and missing features but the community pulled together and filled a huge feedback forum which I’m sure has helped the devs to pull it all together. It’s really healthy now and hopefully IL-2/2 (or CoD, or CloD) will be soon. Damnit that was an opinion! Doh. |

Welcome aboard. I'm very glad you're familiar with terms like "testing the waters" and "using the forum search function", because i can't resist and i end up flying less and less by answering the same questions by different people all the time.
At least you seem like the sort of fellow that will save me some time to actually fly :-P |
Well, after the usual farting about assigning axes and key commands to get me flying, (and having to save my changes to an actual file in windows explorer was a bit of a throwback to be honest), i managed to fly the 1st training mission.
The "fly through the hoops" intro mission is a bit of a letdown as it is obviously based on the FSX glider "missions", (and starfox on the snes before that). It was pretty vague, ("turn 060!" how do i do that with a 1930's compass?), but the flight model was pretty smooth, although it seemed a little forgiving to my ham fisted thrashings. The GFX were smooth and crisp, although the AA was a little jagged, (will try forcing through NVIDIA CP), and the draw distance seemed a litle short (FPS vs. draw distance is always a sticky topic. Personally i would like a slider. It's my PC so i would like to determine whats best for me, thanks). I fired up the 2md mision after that and was immediatly struck by the WTF factor. A full manual start-up is needed? I had better start swotting the manual. There is a proper manual right? Coolts ps. Menus seem a little basic as does the general GUI, but so was IL-2 IMO. Functional would be the operative word. Looking forward to aerobatics and shooty 'splodes pps. <moggy> I work with a guy who worked on 'chorlton' and made 'trapdoor' for that matter, (ask him how you get plasticine to make ripples and bubbles and your brain will melt). Top bloke he is. Proper down to earth. Predecessor to 'purple and brown' (http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=...C2&FORM=VIRE1#) ppps. honestly, if you ever met rich and percy (purple and brown) and heard them laugh, you would crease up. Its exctly them!!! |
