gtx 590 anyone ?
Hi folks
I just ordered a new rig. Basically quadcore Intel, 8 GB, 120 GB SSD (+ 1 TB conventional drive) and a Nvidia GTX 590. Sorry, I have no more detailed specs at the moment. Does anybody have already experience with this card ? |
Yes. I have two of them.
990x (stocked at 3.6 ghz, 3.8 with the gigabyte boost button. but I can over clock it to about 4.6 or so easily. Just need to water cool it for that) 12 GB DDR3 1600 OCZ Vertex 3 SSD and twin EVGA GTX 590s (quad SLI) on SLI enhanced games, its awesome. But on games like Rise of Flight and Cliffs of Dover.. you cant use it to your advantage. I can still get 60 FPS in Rise of Flight but I have to turn a few things down. In Cliffs of Dover.. with land/buildings set to medium... leaving aircraft and effects on HIGH..Im getting about 50 FPS on the single core. there was a note that SLI will be enabled when the next nvidia drivers come out with a profile for it.. so who knows. I tried creating my own profile for it, then enabling 4 GPU rendering.. and I was getting 3 fps. If they get SLI working.. it should do quite nicely. |
so ...
it is an investment in the future, as I see it. Makes no sense to switch to GTX 580 I guess ? Thanks for the reply. The target should be to run everything maxed out, especially the beautiful landscape ....

by the way

By the way, I had this discussion on Ram 800 or 1600 - does this make a real difference gamewise ?? (1600 not readily being available now) |

Is it so bad ? My current rig is somewhat intel core 2 duo 2600 and a GTX 260/2, win7 32, 4GB ((Iknow, that Win does not adress all of it) and at least for ROF, I did not have the impression, that he game has problems. On the other hand, with my current rig COD just has to be turned waaaay down in settings in order to make it playable. I realized the current drop in FPS with the latest patch too, by the way. Usually I do not fumble much around with settings, once they are ok for me, but now I have to. |
You would have been better off with a single 3GB GTX 580. This way with a 590, you will only have 1.5 GB of vRAM effectively, and if the game doesn't support SLI - slower GPU than the GTX 580.
If you really wanted a proper SLI solution, 2 x GTX 580 3GB should have been your choice. Not to mention that GTX 590 has a cheap power regulation, so I wouldn't recommend any OC - especially no 24/7 OC. Quote:

thanks for your answer

First - I am meanwhile aware of the GT 590 characteristics. Unfortunately, the 3 GB 580 is no option at the moment because of no market availability. So I am stuck with 1,5 GB 580 or 590. Second - the 590 promises a lot of potential due to its SLI design. Third - it is not noisy. Forth, it consumes a lot less power than 580 .... ?!! So - even it seems to be the worse choice at the moment, I will stick with it now. My PC seller told me, that I may change the card within a few months, if not satisfied, so what ... Concerning RAM, its DDR3 .... |
if
I am able to play with high settings, 1920 resolution and over 30 FPS, thats what I am aiming at the moment.

http://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/GeFor...er_average.gif Cheap power regulation, runs very hot, "only" 1.5 GB of usable VRAM, and with no working SLI for CloD yet - I can not see it as a better option than a GTX 580, or 2 x 580 in SLI. Quote:

thanks again

So - maybe I am stupid - but what then is SLI for ? Concerning the power question, I got the quote from my seller, that for a 580 I need a stronger power input, with the 590 i dont ??? (We are basically upgrading a "gamer PC" tht they are offering) I still have the chance to change things tomorrow, so your Input is very appreciated .... |
My 2 Bob's worth
I have 2 mates who are in the computer business and know their onions. Both of them said only one way to go - GTX 580 1.5G
|
When I was deciding on the upgrade, 2 mates who are in separate computer businesses, one who owns his own, both recommended the GTX 580 1.5G. I am happy with it.
I have an Antrec case with 4 air cooling fans and it does not run hot. Sorry for the duplication - I did not think the first one posted and I can't delete it. |
ok
got it. Thank you all ...

Thus your seller is either uninformed or there was some kind of misunderstanding. I am willing to bet that he meant you can run 590 with the current PSU, but not 2 x 580's. ;) Ditch that 590 and go for a GTX 580. If you really want an SLI solution, get another later on or now if the budget allows it (preferably in a combo with a MBO equipped with nf200 chip on it so you can run them both in x16/x16 bandwidth). In all above solutions you will have 1.5 GB of VRAM at your disposal. |
Believe EVGA just came out with a GTX 580 3gig which is SLI ready, might also be worth a look. I am also looking to upgrade in week or so and am looking at the EVGA card.

got it ...
and runs very well. Have maxed out almost everything, just not SSAO and epilepsy. AA = 4x
My rig now: Gigabyte Z68X-UD5 Intel I7-2600K 120 GB SSD HD (+ 1 TB conventional) Geforce GT 580 3GB Gainward 4 x 2GB DDR3 1866 Kingstone Hyper Win 7 64 bit First time I tried to fly a mission over London (standard mission against german He 111) and first time, I have the feeling to be able to be on target with my shooting. Before, my GT 260 obviously missed a lot of frames and I had erratic shooting. Went low over the landscape and watched aircraft shadows .... It is a whole new experience. I have not done any optimization yet, as I was busy installing the standard programs on the rig as well as Windows updating etc. Let steam install the latest available patch. Thank you all for pointing me towards GT 580. You made my day ! |
Nice, glad you enjoying that 3GB 580. :)
Can you run that 4 DIMMs at 1T, or are you forced to run them on 2T? That Z68 UD5 sure has a hefty price tag on it. |
...
1T or 2T - where do I check this ? (BIOS ???)
I'll keep you posted, once I am home from work ... |
CPU-Z, or just restart PC and read what it says on the screen before Win starts to load ;)
