Thanks to all at DT for your hard work.

Downloading now, but not getting any info on the size of the download. For those of us with poor broadband speeds it would be helpful to know the size and therefore an idea of the time it will take.

Also, is there an updated readme for the release ?

Thanks again.

Edit; size of file is 484MB

Furio 06-05-2015 12:32 PM

Thanks for the long awaited update, DT!

I think I've read before that 4.13 was going to include possibility to make search-lights point to specific direction, to home the night flights in.
It's not mentioned in the readme so it's not there, right?

duffys tavern 06-05-2015 10:12 PM

Is there instillation instructions or a "read-me"?

SPEKTRE76 06-05-2015 10:22 PM

Definitely some nice AI improvements that aren't advertised in the patch.

* AI fighters vs. bombers now doesn't suck, and AI fighters actually make some intelligent attacks.

* As far as I can tell, bombers hold formation until the formation gets badly shot up.

* Ace AI gunners are now formidable, but not unbeatable. They're not too dangerous until you get close, but they will rip you to shreds at close ranges especially if you don't keep your speed up, and if you don't maneuver to make yourself a tough target.

* AI gunners don't fire during high-G maneuvers anymore.

I set up a QMB mission with 4 Ace P-40E vs. 16 Ace Wellington III and set my plane to autopilot. Arcade mode on.

On the first pass, the entire flight maneuvered to take the Wellington III flight at the right end of the usual "line abreast" formation, and my AI pilot made a lovely head-on pass from 12 o'clock high shot at the trailing bomber in the flight. Right out of the textbook!

The P-40 flight then maneuvered for shots from the flank against the same section of Wellingtons, jinking and weaving as they flew in to avoid fire and then making shallow "pursuit curve" attacks from 5 o'clock or 7 o'clock level.

The historically laser-like Wellington tail gunners started opening up at 700 meters (a bit long), but their fire was mostly inaccurate until about 100 meters out, and they had trouble keeping their sights on the quickly rolling P-40s. So, that's a sign that AI gunnery has been toned down.

Most of the flight made it, but my plane got bracketed by two of the Wellingtons at 100 meters or less. With dozens of bullets in the engine, it developed a huge coolant leak and the engine instantly died. But . . . NO FIRE or giant clouds of smoke. So, definitely a DM upgrade for the P-40!

The rest of the flight disenaged smartly and continued to attack, making high and level rear quarter attacks against the remaining Wellies in the flight until they were all shot down. They then turned their attention to the second flight and began to massacre them using very aggressive and fairly intelligent attacks.

Lots of good maneuvering using the P-40's superior roll, and lots of diving attacks from "high rear" just high enough to stay out of the cone of the Wellington tail gunner's guns.

I watched one P-40 follow an isolated Wellington into a half loop (!), following it at 6 o'clock high/level, and noticed that there was no defensive fire. Presumably the gunners were stuck to the bomber's roof by g-forces. If that's so, then another nice improvement.

Net result was 3 P-40's steaming from coolant leaks, 2 badly shot up enough that they had to crash land, with one returning to base, and one lucky survivor. 8 Wellingtons shot down out of a squadron of 16. Not bad for an ace vs. ace AI QMB mission.

The P-40 series is now officially the rugged warbird that it was always meant to be. Now let's see if they've fixed the DM for the P-39 series!

Thanks for the update. It is why I keep flying this sim.

I just finished downloading the file and haven't installed it yet. Have the fuel gages in the P-40E & M ever been fixed so that they work? They had a gauge on the left side of the control panel for the fuselage tank, and two on the floor (similar to the P-51) for the two wing fuel tanks.

Artist 06-06-2015 08:33 PM

Thank you so much for keeping this alive!

Alas, no, it seems. Same for early Yaks, G.50, Hellcats and probably others. This one isn't keen on flying over enemy territory with these planes...

I think in the case of the early Yaks IRL the fuel gauges were on the upper surfaces of the wings, on top of the fuel tanks themselves, and were viewed from the cockpit. That's why there's no gauge in the cockpit.

Can't speak for the others, though. Carry a stopwatch, lol.

I'd like to add another note of thanks to Team Daidalos. Once again, as they always have in the past, the processes of downloading and installation went very smoothly. Once again, the new features were instantly ready for action. Indeed, I've already added the flyable IK-3 to a set of single missions produced specifically with 4.13 in mind. The updated mission pack, based on the bombardment of Belgrade of 6 April 1941, is available at a sister forum:

OPB sight questions

1. i have set keys to increase and decrease fov but at top and bottom of screen the sight has its numbers cut off across the top, i have tried toggle fov as well, i can get it big or slightly smaller but not to fit completely to screen.
also is there any way to use it at night, toggle reticle has no effect and reticle is always black lines, never illuminated?

You have to put the download into Steam yourself. Download the patch, open up the download application and very carefully select the correct path into Steam (its under Steam Apps, then common).

All working ok for me and showing the correct version on the opening screen.

New torpedoes for the Russians, dual torps for a20 series, flares too. Tab gives drop info. Lots of goodies here, but no ordnance for field mod hurricane and no rockets or para grenades for pe2/3 series? Oh well, time to tinker and begin updating old missions to 413!!!! Any possibility for TAS Gage/changeable input for hud?

Thank you TD! B24 is great! I like your work since the beginning.

One question: since when there are so many Ju88 versions?
Ju 88 P-1 , A-1, A-5, C-2 (AI)?? I'm totally confused about the Ju-88s. :o

These new versions were added in 4.13.

A-1 - Early bomber version (shorter wings, less defensive ability)
A-5 - Stop gap bomber version brought about because the A-4 was not ready (has many features of the A-4).
C-2 - A gunship version with an array of cannons and machine guns up front.
P-1 - A prototype that saw some active use armed with a BK 75mm anti-tank cannon.

Pips 06-08-2015 07:05 AM

Have just d/loaded it. I'm going to do nothing this weekend but explore it and fly all the new aircraft. Or organise missions where I fly with (or against) the new AI aircraft!

Fun times ahead.

It's been said before, but I'll say it again. TD you guys are just LEGENDS!

The nicest thing about patch releases, is that the almost dead forum comes alive again!

And better so if there are bugs present! :P

You should really do smaller patches, with a lower testing time.
When you do things so big, problems also grow on an exponential way.

BTW, great Job!

Specially on the P40, always loved that bird, and now it seems that justice have been made! It's gorgeous to see it fly now.

Thank you for this detailed answer! Great! It would be really nice, to get a Ju-88 C as flyable (C-5, C-6, or the G-1)

But why they are not listed in the patch notes? (New AI-Planes)?

Kittle 06-08-2015 02:04 PM

I know the Ju-88 P-1 is meant to be a tank buster but I couldn't help taking a crack at the new B-24D in one.....awesome!!! Single shot kills each time, even had one just explode in my face. I think some armor was added for it's intended tank busting mission as I took several hits from the gunners .50 cals and the damage wasn't as bad as I expected.

Looking at the Ju-88A-6, I thought that it was a mine clearing variant. Well, it apparently isn't! I won't spoil it, if you don't know it. What next? Jousting lances or dangling hooks? :)

I like the cockpit, head positions/views, instrumentation etc in the N1K1.

p.s. at least the P-40s a have fuel warning light, and with low rpm cruise, it's usually possible to fly home. An in-game stop watch with realistic sound effects would be a nice addition, though ;)

Even without Italy country, incredible!
We M.C.200 and M.C.202, maps of Donbass, Stalingrad and now Tobruk. I wonder what it takes to build a IT folder with a dynamic campaign or at least of single mission.
With all due respect for other countries, but it built the IK-3, aircraft built in 12 models but we have not even the cockpit of the Fiat G.55 and Cant.Z 506 and Cant.Z 1007.

Sorry for my english.

Tony, cool down, although there's no officially released Italy folder, we can have one since 2004, and several Italian squads are supported ingame, and there's an Italian language pack, and Italy is quite well represented planewise. Frankly, much better than its traditional opponent Britain. I know because the Med is my favourite theater. :)

TD isn't a paid group. It's volunteer based. The reason the IK-3 is in the game is because a small group decided they wanted to build an aircraft that was meaningful to them. So they did it.

Most of the major Italian fighter types are represented as is at least one bomber. That's not bad. I'd love more too... but someone has to make them. If you're so inclined then please do. I'd love to see a G.55 cockpit :)

Tony4mori 06-08-2015 10:41 PM

then please do?! I bought this game and see airplanes that have been built in 700 units without cockpit, but see a plane built in 12 units functioning, i do not think a better decision.
Never mind the planes, Italy does not even have a dynamic campaign and singles missions in this game.

What you (and I) bought is Il-2 1946. The rest is gift. I too would like to have more Italian planes and maps, but having some British and French planes to shoot at is more urgent. ;) And you'd better to ask for the Forgotten Countries mod, so that you could fly a G.55 against Messerschmitts if someone makes a cockpit. :-P
