Official Comment On Sounds
Lots and lots of discussion and speculation on sounds...especially engine. It would be most appreciated to hear from Luthier on this subject to manage expectations so many of us can stop wondering if the current sounds are placeholders or not.

If these are just placeholders, let's hope the devs will implement the improved sounds in a future update. If not... let's hope we can use something like Jafa's sounds in-game when the SDK is released to us. |
birdies tell me that the sounds present are NOT placeholders. Can you give it a rest now, finally?
oh, col123, could you please explain which part of physics should change tracer ammo's behavior to NOT go laser-beam-like? And please, for goods sake, don't say anything that contains the word "wind"... |

I suppose I've always been a fanboy of the IL2 series, but I got to agree with you on this one. The developement team has done so many great things with the sim over the years, but sounds have been a weak point. So why not real spit and 109 sounds? :)

and while your at it, take your off topic questions elsewhere. thats a pathetic attempt at trying to say you know better and then derail the chat. |

IIRC they said before they did not have budget to send all necessary people with all necessary equipment to UK to record samples of Merlin, DB and other engines. Therefore other samples were used.
If they have budget in future things may change but it depends on sales and on publisher (international one probably). Maybe it is better to ask this question at their site too. I would rather count on 3rd party add-ons. CoD is open for 3rd party add-ons to compensate for limitations a small studio has compared to multinational gamedev giants. |
Like I stated in my post, it would be nice to hear something from the developers. Maybe tomorrow?

There have been about one hundred posts about the sound. Don't you think it would be nice to hear somthing official from Luthier. I do and it would appear a few others as well. :-P |
I love how that one post about the game being 50% done has brought out the hope of the placeholder in almost every post.
If something isn't to someone's liking they now pin their hopes on it being a placeholder. I really can't understand why people hate the sound, I reckon it sounds better than IL2. When I first saw the you tube videos, before the release, I thought the guns sounded awful, but in the game with headphones on I don't find them bad at all. Yes there are sounds missing there should be clunking sounds from the guns themselves especially the MG17s as they are close to the cockpit and I've read accounts of pilots hearing them. Also the wind is missing and the engines should sound different in dives and climbs but other than that I'd rather have the AI improved and the radios fixed. Oh yeah when people mention the sound mods for 1946, I always reverted to stock sounds as the modded sound was awful. There was this strange recurring cockpit noise that just sounded off. |

If there has indeed been 'about one hundred posts about the sound', why on earth do you think we need another one? The developers will develop the game as they should. I have a feeling that they know more of what is required, and of that to which you refer, than you or I. |

Absolutely no respect here for people who take absolutely no effort in reading up the other threads, where educated opinions have been given, yet seem to have a special keyboard shortcut for "alt+tab, go to Banana forums, 'new thread'" to blow off steam. And to annoy others by impairing the forum's readability. |

It's already been said by the Luthier that these sounds are all-new and here to stay. Oleg said they are all synthesised samples from the same Russian engine (Klimov?) and he's jolly proud of the fancy arse way they are rendered in game. He seems to think the method by which they are made is more important than the end result.
Sounds, GUI design and textures were never a strength at Maddox Games. |
Cockpit sounds are pretty good I think, don't mind them at all. Poor external sounds are deliberate to encourage people to fly fullreal!:)

Sadly I have to agree. |
Know we know why we wouldn't see any videos with ingame sounds before the release ;)
And that all sounds are new is, well, not really true is it? Sounds exactly like that lawmmover sounds we have in the 1946.. ;) |

Let's mod the hell out of it then  |
I'm getting really tired of hearing that old chestnut about them re-using the old lawnmower sounds from il-2.
NO, NO, NO  These are all-new, specially-created lawnmower sounds. ;) |
I already posted this on one of the 48 other threads currently running on this subject. Might as well put it here too
I think, possibly, that the sound may have been an area they felt they could get away with temporarily given the amount of other things that obviously were unfinished. Because sound is pretty much a 'bolt on' self-contained module that doesn't impact on or potentially break any other features of the sim, it may have been viewed as being of low importance at this stage. There are many other areas where not getting it right will cause problems elsewhere - quite a few which are still being fixed now :). Priority would have been given to them. The question is what their strategy will be for addressing this in the future? With modding potential being built in as a base feature of CoD I think it's very possible that their thinking always may have been to leave it to third parties. When the SDK is released I suspect sound will be one of the easiest things to change - either by some of the modders who have worked on il2, or by other companies (success of CoD obviously a requirement here). I could imagine a variety of 'soundpacks' being available - as well as 3rd-party created crew chat, radio comms chat, etc. As we saw with features in old il2 those specialising in one small niche can often devote more time and effort to getting it really good than the original developers can. |
Hmmm...yes sound packs and mods really improved IL2 but how will they work for COD online?
|
Good point - I would hope that if done officially through the SDK it wouldn't be a problem. (?)
Not talking about changing FMs here, and the potential is built in to COD from the ground up, so hopefully will be workable. We've yet to get any info on the SDK and how user-created and third-party content will be managed - but the fact that the devs have gone the route of embracing this should mean the situation for officially approved mods should be different to old il-2....I hope :) |

i have commented on other sound threads informing everyone including the developers to simply download the original sound recordings uploaded to the add on section under sounds at simouthouse for CFS2, i played CFS2 for over 10 years and i had them all.

That's what I did when I compared them to the actual in-game characteristics, and so should you. Facts enough for you, sceptic? Indicating that people presume when they in fact are not, is just rude and immature. |
Original Sound CoD
The original sound of cod is for me a very big disappointment. :(

Yesterday after having played CoD for a while I jumped back to my modded version of IL-2 and I am sad to say, that personally I think the modded IL-2 is many times better that CoD in most aspects. CS. :) |
Maybe they wont change the comment on the matter. Years ago, Oleg told us that the sounds where great, but only when using a high end sound system.
But one thing is clear: The old IL2 sounds does not sound like the original birds. |
Guys, the whole simulation is a payware-placeholder for something being released sometime next year or so.

Bricks: LOL! I'll tell my boss that I'm just a placeholder for myself for a year or so, until that I'll only surf forums and facebook, but he has to pay me nonetheless :D |
