Quick epilepsy update

Hello everyone,

Once again I want to point out that a lot of your earlier anger was misplaced. Actually, our colleagues at Ubisoft are extremely interested in making this game a success, they care about our opinion and yours, and everyone we work with there is understanding and cordial and more than willing to listen and change their mind.

Having said that, I'm glad to announce that the debacle has been resolved.

We will be making the filter optional, however turned on by default. And we will be adding a large epilepsy warning to our splash screen. I am almost certain that this update will hit the steam servers on March 30th and thus seamlessly make it onto everyone's machines when the game is installed on the 31st.

The March 30th update will also address some of the issues reported with the Russian version, but we'll provide more details with the patch notes once we know for sure what it'll contain. Obviously, we need to test the heck out of all the changes to make sure we don't introduce any new bugs while fixing the old ones (the team's favorite past time lately as it seems).

So there! Do a happy dance, I know I did.

furbs 03-28-2011 11:18 PM

very good news...so the very nice looking props stay? :)

Tree_UK 03-28-2011 11:18 PM

Hurrah thats great news thank you, and great for all us SLI and Crossfire users.

Dano 03-28-2011 11:20 PM

I'm sure there will be a great many very happy people :)

Thanks for the update, Luthier. I'm sure that will put many minds at rest.

Might want to make this a sticky for a few days.

Geier 03-28-2011 11:23 PM

Thank you for the news.

Please, stick this. It will help to stop the panic. I'm going crazy. :(

Codex 03-28-2011 11:24 PM

Awesome news mate.

Just one question, have the DVD versions been affected by this epi filter? I mean I've been advised my order will be available tomorrow so I would have assumed the store would have had my copy sitting in the back room for about a week now.

JG52Krupi 03-28-2011 11:25 PM

Thanks for the update and your time Luthier.

The game will not allow you to play the version that's on the DVD even if you try. The installer will automatically grab and download the latest version as it exists on steam's servers, and install that right off the bat.

So, whenever it is you install the game, your version will be the same as everybody else's. You can choose to disable future updates if you like but not with the initial install.

AWL_Spinner 03-28-2011 11:26 PM

Awesome - thanks Luthier, Oleg and team!

Can't wait until Cliffs reaches the quiet backwaters of retail Canada (May delivery from Amazon for the DVD it would seem) - no doubt by then there'll be several iterations of patch to download from Steam (I've been impressed with how this process works with other titles so no concerns there).

Cheers,

Spinner

Well, Luthier...A big kis...heu...hug...And I think that UBI deserves a big thanks from the sim community...I had enough on this UBI bashing...And they
did change the DRM process , and now, they revised their position on a major legal issue...I think that shows their good faith and their total support to COD...It is a VERY good news, for us, for you, the team and Oleg who certainely needs a break here... as well as you !!!!
So go ahead my friend ! Dance ! Because...WILL BE BACK WITH LOTS OF COMPLAINTS AND WHINNING  !!!!! ;)
Thank you sooooo much ! :-P

Salute !

Les 03-28-2011 11:35 PM

Thanks for the good news. Does this mean, if we disable the epilepsy filter, we will be seeing the game as it was originally designed, and not one that was tweaked to pass the epilepsy test without the filter?

No, it means you'll have a seizure :-P

The epi filter is not a legal requirement, it's voluntary, the only legal requirement required is a warning label on the product. Whether that be on the box, on the manual or on screen it doesn't matter, it only has to be displayed. UBI have put in place a voluntary health and safety check that surpasses the legal requirement for games.

Yes, but they did that to avoid having a law stomped on their heads (and other editors' & studios')
and when you make such an engagement, it becomes somehow binding, even if not purely "legal".
The lawyers at Ubi must have been consulted on that one.

l3uLLDoZeR 03-28-2011 11:43 PM

Yay, everybody can have happy thoughts now....will these changes do much for the multiplayer aspect of the game?

MugiSNK 03-28-2011 11:43 PM

Just to clear things up for me:
Will this boost performance and cut the stuttering?

EDIT: Will the game finally be playable?

Thanks

MugiSNK

123-Wulf-123 03-28-2011 11:46 PM

You have the game installed then?

So you know how it performs on your system already?

Me? No. All videos I've seen include the stutter. I hope it will be fixed by the next update, as said.

CharveL 03-28-2011 11:49 PM

That's a good start. Hopefully they make some progress on the memory handling issues as well.

Amazingly, things really aren't all doom & gloom given a bit of patience.

Royraiden 03-28-2011 11:50 PM

Thank you very much, a lot of us knew you were going to fix this very soon and you did. Those who were insanely worried can take a rest now?

Azimech 03-28-2011 11:54 PM

A big thanks to Luthier, Oleg, 1C and Ubisoft! Grrreat news!

matsher 03-28-2011 11:57 PM

Yaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

Such good news. Way to go guys. Its good to hear that Ubi is supporting the
effort to make this game a success. All the speculation was getting heated and
nearly outta control.

I have a simple question... (maybe a silly one for those who know)

When we install from DVD - the filter will be there right? But Steam will auto update
immediately after install with a filter "Switch" so we can choose to have it on or off?

Is that how it will work? Please can someone tell me if this is how it will work.
Thanks.

312_Jura 03-29-2011 12:05 AM

Well said, an honest man(woman) will never be without friends ;)

And you needn't worry about CoD it will far surpass your expectations.... :)

matsher 03-29-2011 12:12 AM

Thanks BADAIM, I just had a moment there.

Luthier was right about the little dance, I had one a minute ago, felt good.
I feel like I just won a car in the county raffle.

I am sure the community is breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Iam buying a new quad core CPU tomorrow. Hopefully will be enough
to run COD smoothly. The new GPU will have to wait another month.
Yay!

timholt 03-29-2011 12:12 AM

Luthier, I am very glad to see sanity and common sense has prevailed. I have no doubt this epilepsy filter caused you guys plenty of grief even before CoD hit the Russian streets.
So, and I am sure I speak on behalf of all of those who have been involved in IL2 for the past (up to 10 years), many thanks for persevering in what must have been "the mother of all battles" to get this aberration made selectable - bloody well done old chap as they used to say in the RAF.
This thread should be a sticky under the heading "Western Version Epilepsy Selectable Solution"

Solnyshko 03-29-2011 12:14 AM

What a turn around (I mean the community response) - I was never in any doubt :D

No prob mate, It's been a crazy house here, it's a little contagious!

BobTuck 03-29-2011 12:20 AM

Woot! Thanks Luthier!

I personally think the anger generated on the forums helped to convince Ubi to consider alternatives :-P

BobTuck.

ElAurens 03-29-2011 12:21 AM

Great news.

Thanks to UBI for a logical approach, and thanks to Oleg and the entire team for what had to have been some pretty "interesting" conference calls between Moscow and Paris.

And some thoughts I've been mulling over about UBI Soft.

You know, in the great scheme of things, the IL2 franchise is pretty small time stuff to a big company like UBI. All those big selling console, FPS, and various other titles that dwarf IL2's sales. Did you every stop to think that just maybe UBI sees having the best WW2 air combat simulator in it's stable as a feather in it's cap? A corporate image enhancer? I know I'd feel pretty darned good about having the title that "shot down" Microsoft's high dollar CFS series.

Food for thought the next time you feel like kicking UBI in the chops over a decision that most of us probably know very little about.

GF_Mastiff 03-29-2011 12:21 AM

Have you seen any reports of people running the Russian "non epilepsy filter" version on SLI/CF rigs? Qurious how much difference it makes. I keep reading abour Russians disabeling CF and doubling their FPS. Sounds right up your ally, as a system builder, to investigate and test this as soon as you get your copy of CoD.

A big thank you for these words. This is kind of a relief. AND it is how a developer and a publisher should listen and communicate. Again, thank you very much.

The important is that I'm totally confident about the future of CoD now.

Woohoo!!!

This is great news. I'm curious what changed Ubisoft's minds. Was it the wave of cancelled pre-orders and the rage from the forums?

From what luthier wrote before, it seemed that they were pretty much set to enforce the filter.

Anyway, this rocks.

As a diagnosed and confirmed Epileptic, I thank you and Ubisoft for seeing sense. I appreciate the opportunity to "Play at my own risk". Its nice to know I won't have to contact the Epilepsy foundation of America to get them to talk sense into Ubi and make this 'safety feature' optional. Particularly since "photo sensitive" epileptics are not common to all the very small minority of the population that has seizures.

Again, thank you.

Well, I'm not one of the Epileptics that are photo sensitive so the first order of business for me will be . . . turn the damn filter off. :D I just really appreciate the opportunity to be a grown up and decide for myself.

"DirectX 11 Support To Reach Crysis 2 Sometime Today
12:11 AM - OhmWrecker - 35 Comments
According to the guys at Maximum PC Crysis 2 should receive a DirectX 11 patch today which will also unlock an advanced graphics menu in-game.
Crysis 2 already looks amazing in DX9 mode, so it'll be interesting to see how much more DX11 adds to the visuals. Thanks goes out to "N Baker" for the tip!

Update: Uh oh, it looks like Maximum PC's sources were a bit off on the release date. Crytek's Tiago Sousa did indeed confirm that they were working on DX11 features on his Twitter account, but he did not give a date. Sousa's tweet has since been removed, and Crytek Community Manager Tom Ebsworth issued the following statement:

No patch was ever confirmed, I have no idea why this website even posted such information. This thread is locked just the same as the others for trying to spread inaccurate information. When there are any big announcements regarding Crysis 2 they will be posted on MyCrysis, if you read something about a patch for example, but don't see it on MyCrysis.com, then it isn't genuine."

DX9...Looking great...New Engine...No DX11 yet...False rumors...
Sounds familiar ? ;)

Thanks Luthier! Great news. All will be well, as the patches roll out this will become the sim that we all hoped for. Thanks to all the team who are working on this. I have complete faith in Maddox Games fixing any problems with this superb game. Can't wait to get my CE and boxed set in a couple of days. Well done all!

Thanks a lot for the info Luthier . I´m a happy camper now and I´m going to do my magic COD dance in few minutes. Now I just have to get my computer sorted and get mysef a new GPU.

WONDERFUL news!

I'd like to think that this would have been done without the upset of the fans, but I there might have been a small part played by the vocal minority in this one.

Blakduk 03-29-2011 04:46 AM

Good to see a general lightening of the mood among the majority of posters on this forum. I have faith that the initial bugs will be resolved quickly and we go all get back to virtually killing each other.
As an aside- i am epileptic and that is the main reason i have to make do with virtual flying rather than flying IRL (I've been very lucky to find medication that works and just managed to avoid the scalpel jockeys drilling through my head a few years ago). My seizures are not triggered by flashing lights but they can be triggered by lack of sleep- will there be a filter to stop me having too much fun and staying up too late??? ;-)

Thanks Luthier and all those involved for working on this and coming to a practical solution.
It`s only in situations like this that one can be tested, how a person acts under various circumstances shows up their nature.

This is indeed a very good news. We'll see more tomorrow, I guess, after downloading that patch.

The only question from me will then be: can the Russian version be internationalized :) But anyway, my Cyrillic is improving fast. And when can we hope for map editor/creator.

Richie 03-29-2011 05:38 AM

Thanks for this.

Being a so called fanboy has not put me to shame at all :)
Ah well. Though I can not tell the difference, or dont know what to look for, I must say I am thrilled to how things are being handeled. Than you for taking your time to inform the community about this.

Great luthier

This game certainly does stir passions.

I have waited 6 Years for this and Maddox games releases as well as those of other games are certainly not perfect but like Il-2 and Whine, aging will make it better and Better.

best wishes

Hunger

Im sure I read a post from Luthier somewhere that it was the Epilepsey filter that was killing SLI/Crossfire performance, do any of the guys who got the russian version have SLI or crossfire? Maybe they can confirm if Luthier is correct.

Extreme_One 03-29-2011 06:47 AM

Common sense prevails. Nice. :)
