Which Aircraft Will You Choose?
As we get closer and closer and closer to maybe possibly actually having this game, I wanted to ask people which plane they're going to adopt for the battle of britain and why. Also, do you play in an organized community? What time do you play online? Maybe we can help get people who want to be part of something bigger involved in online wars or squadrons. Might be a better use of time and forum space than another argument about Steam or Freetrack.
As for me: Plane?: Hurricane Why?: My friends and I play missions in IL-2 with the P-40E. When we start flying as a squadron in CloD I think we'll find it an easier transition to the Hurricane. Also, we proudly fight for the allies in this virtual war. Organized?: Roughly four or five of us play IL-2 with some regularity but not part of a larger online war. We fly as the Bad Wolf Squadron (not historical). We're fairly casual, but can step up the discipline when required. When?: We fly around 8:00pm EST (Eastern Canada/USA) |
interesting question: I'm quite looking forward to try the smaller planes, on which I have some moderate experience (350 hrs on the Tiggie and 24 on the Bf108) and want to see what they achieved there. After that I'm very curious to try the lot, esp the twin engine boys.
Having said this all.. I'm quite fought between the 109 and Spitfire.. |
Pikachu i choose you!
(Bf019) |
As long as I can strap a lewis gun on me Tiger Moth, I'll be right!
|
The Hurricane's appealing to me at the moment. :) I'll fly the Tiger Moth training section first though.

At the earliest opportunity, I'll set up a solo Spit flight at Dawn, do some aerobatics over the airfield, edit the track, capture the footage and make a short film, adding Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. Then I'll watch it a lot, and compare it to the identical thing I did with IL2. After I've done the full training thing in the Tiger, I'm hoping to go direct to a Spit squadron, coz I always find Hurris awkward in IL2. I can usually be found getting shot down a lot on UKDed1, any evening from 9.00pm - ish UK time, and expect to be doing the same with CoD, as long as my connection is good enough. Spit for me, every time!;) As to team issues, does anyone recall whether voicecomms are part of the package, or will we be using Teamspeak? |
My squad and me will fly.........
the Bf110 of course. And this time not as close escort, but in a free hunt or as low level surprise on some english airport. :-D |
I think im gonna try out the Bf-110 online after some practice. Something tells me its gonna be a killer.
|
I really cant wait to have a fly of the Bristol Blenheim:)
|
At the moment I can't say what I'll be happier about: 110 or 88. I think I will take them both ;)
|

This should be quite a challange. Can't wait.:-P |
I'll be in the Hurricane 'cause I'm rubbish and need to focus on shooting down big slow bombers and stay well away from the 109's :)
|
i paid the full price for the game, so i will fly all planes...
but in general, online i will fly mostly bombers :) , of any kind :D about onlinewars, i doubt the BoB scenario makes sense for a COOP based one :( so, it will be mainly scripted (i hope it will be possible) 'dogfight' maps online i guess. |
The good old BF 109, my old love ...
|
Nice little thread, feels like ducking into a doorway during a rainstorm with all the moaning on the other threads ;). I'm new to the forum but I've played a lot of IL2 online over the years and I hope the CoD community will be even better.
I'm looking forward to flying the Luftwaffe aircraft, especially the Ju-88 and 87. I always loved taking a bomber up and running the gauntlet against the fighters online (silly I know, but occasionally I'd make it :)). On the RAF front I'm thinking the Spitfire and Tiger Moth. I had a flight in a Tiger Moth for my birthday and it was one of the best moments in my life. I'm definitely up for joining a UK online group once everything is up and running. Anybody recommend anything for casual play (or is it too soon to know yet?). :) |
Hurricane.
Cos' if you shot down bf 109 with aircraft of equal performance, he will always complain that this thing you fly is ufo. If you smash them in inferior machine, there's usually much less bitching. And it's like teaching them a lesson. Bf-110 Early war is the only time when it can hold its own. A pair of it of course. |
I'm with GnigruH, he's got my two favourite choices on each side. :D I won't be doing any teaching of lessons though, I bet.

Some of my best memories from IL-2 are when flying an A-10 or B-25 and having to come home with one engine smoking and feathered. |
I'm looking forward to this one
http://www.toystore.info/images/CORSAIR-PEDAL-PLANE.jpg In all reality like some have mentioned, Im looking forward to all of them. But if I really had to choose. Would have to be the Spitfire. Ever since reading "Fly For Your Life" (biography about RS Tuck) and "Reach For The Sky" (biography about Douglas Bader) when I was probably around 8 years old, I've just been in love with the Spit ever since. |
1. Bf-109 E-3
2. Spitfire MkIIb (If it's included) 3. Bf-110 C-7 (If flyable) Really looking forward to the addition of the good ol' Fw-190A. Then I'll be in paradise for sure. See you guys in the sky.. well eventually! :-P |
Sukhoi SU26 and use it as BnZ fighter.
|
Hurricanes for me,but as others,a wee spell in the old Tiger Moth first, sort of get aquainted with all things mechanical.
Maybe then, after tea and cakes in the mess,a trip down to the coast to nail some 'orrible 'uns!!:-) |
Tiger Moth to start with, then I will become a renegade and jump in the BF109
|
Bf109 =)
|

For now, I am looking forward to fly every single plane. Especially the tiger moth and the 109. |
1. TigerMoth (still can't believe there is no German trainer...)
2. Bf-110 3. Bf-108 (given we can fly them on externals like in IL-2) 4. Fw-200 (given we can fly them on externals like in IL-2) |
First i will chose 109, then He-111
|
Quote:
Guess I'll start with the Tiger Moth as well. Then going to take a flight with my dear Bf 109. Still not sure what to think about the Su-26... Even if it's just a "benchmark", I'm not really happy about it being in the game. Oh well... |
The powerful, Bf 110 here
|
Quote:
I'll try the Tiger Moth first, then the Hurri with the two speed prop... just cause I like 'crap' planes. :) |
Hurricane offline - because that's the BoB RAF plane.
Spit & BF 109 online - Hurris going against 109s is gonna be a bit tough. |

I don't really fly online very often, i get the urge once every couple of months and spend a month or so flying on a couple of servers that i like, then i disappear again for another couple of months. As such, i can't be part of an organized group. However, i have no problem teaming up with other server regulars who fly "freelance", especially if we have a few common sorties under our belt and i'm somewhat familiar with how they do things. Part of my infrequent online flying is also some connectivity troubles i had with IL2 after switching to a new router and i haven't really taken the time to fix those, so maybe i'll be online more often if i take care of that. Especially if we get a semi-dynamic online mini-campaign mode. I have gotten a friend of mine back into flight sims with IL2 and maybe i could have a semi-regular wingman to fly with, but he's fixated on the Spit's looks and the Hurri's ease of handling to the point that it will be hard to convince him to try the opposite side. Serves me right for learning the basics of FMB and creating a spitfire coop mission just so i could show him the ropes, now he's averse to every energy fighter because he's used to aircraft that are good in turnfights :-P That's it as far as online goes, for offline i'll probably fly everything as i'm going to go through the tiger moth training and both campaigns, then use the QMB to try out the bombers. |
Here's a clue :)

They choose you. You don't choose them.

Wish I'd thought of that! Salute Gunny |
I Look forward to flying a misson with you Blackdog, it will be quicker than reading your posts :)
|
Until the P-47 comes in, whichever allied fighter has the best roll rate, with probably actually means the Hurricane and Typhoon, whenever it comes out.
Everybody knows what the Spitfires are going to do, but when you see someone in a Hurricane, you really gotta wonder what's going through their mind. |
I'll be the first to admit it. Im a Spit-dweeb. Always been one, always will be.;)

However, when i get jumped by someone with an advantage, it does tend to be over fairly quick :-P It's how things usually go online: risk takers have a lot of kills and deaths, people who play careful have less. However, the overall ratio tends to favor the risk takers, because by putting themselves in dangerous situations they gradually learn to defend better and be better with the stick and rudder ;) |
XIII internally run faction sections, I run the RAF one and we operate as No.501 County of Gloucester (Auxillery) Squadron and No.64 Squadron, both operated from RAF Kenley and Croydon during their time in the BoB. 501 will fly Hurricanes and 64 will fly Spitfires. We are jolly well excited to get in our kites up into the blue to give Jerry a black eye.
|
I guess I'm alone, I liked Speedy D in Pacific Fighters and I always loved steep dives, so I'm on the JU-87 & -88 Nothing like divebombing and standing om the brakes!
Staffan |
All those interested in a squad should check us out. We are international with pilots from all over the world. We will have 1 if not several Cliffs of Dover MP servers up. Our main goal is having fun, with squad members ranging from very experienced virtual fliers to those brand new to simming.
We also have a new website: www.SyndicateSquadron.com Come drop a line ;) |
109E for me. If it is anything like the IL2 version I'll be right at home.
|
Bf110 since it has magic all over it
|
|
Do-17z/215!!!1!1one!
Soon as it's flyable. ;) |
I've always had a soft spots for the underdog. I'll be restricted to offline for a while (house full of toddlers, won't be able to play a full mission through), so I plan to take it slow and do the Tigermoth and Gladiator for training, then settle into a Hurricane. In IL2 I prefer the Hurricane over the Spitfire. I guess I'm too old and slow to draw full benefit from the extra manoeuvrability, but the stability of the old Hurribird is very much appreciated. For the German side I'm with the 110 crowd, though released from their historical tactical limitations I think they are may become fearful weapons.
Having done that, I think I'll go fully masochistic and go for the Blenheim... |
That's a nice progression you got there Friendly_Flyer. I think i'll fly the twin engined birds a lot.
I like the early 109s as a fighter option but the lack of fuel is a concern. What i don't know about is the kind of reservoir size vs fuel consumption rates correlation/range etc on the Italian aircraft. It would be interesting to see everyone flying G50s if they can range longer than the 109s :-P EDIT: Apparently it's not going happen... range was about 670km (418 miles) according to wikipedia Quote:
|
I can't wait to try out the Hurri. As much as I have always loved the Spit, the Hurri seems to be the plane I am leaning toward trying out first.
The 110 will be next. |
In Il2 I'm a 109 guy, but I never got the hang of the Emil. I think I'll start with the good Ole Tigermoth and progress from there as I'm comfortable. I do look forward to flying every single plane though, 'cause that's how I roll, baby!
|
I'm going to have to have a go at all variations of German and English fighters/bombers. Not to interested in the Italian birds, but nice that they're there and maybe one day ;).
Tiger Moth to learn the ropes, Spit to start. For no other reason than my gramps and his stories. Of course I'll have to learn the 109 and 110 to better understand it's weaknesses and how to exploit them ;). Ultimately if it was spin the bottle to choose a plane to master, I don't think any choice would disappoint, I can find joy in all offered. |
Well.... I've always had a soft spot for the underdogs and the under-known warplanes, so I'll surely stick with the G.50.
Too bad the Fiat C.R.42 isn't yet available, as I would surely pick that nice bird. Same with the Glad. Also, I like the heavy 12,7mm machine guns, and I'm sure this time around they will be as effective as they were in reality! FIAT airplanes were in general inferior to other Italian types of warplanes (especially Macchi). As to why the Regia Aeronautica chose to send the Fiat "trio" (br 20,g.50 and cr42) is beyond me. Why couldn't sey send the good and fast Cant. Z.1007bis escorted by better fighters (like Macchi C.200, that were as fast as Hurricanes) ? Anyway: 1) Fiat G.50 "Freccia" 2) Blenheim 3) Other kind of bombers 4) Other fighters Cheers! |
I've always enjoyed flying the JU-87, probably hone in my skills with the beast. But I also like the Hurricanes... so I'll swing both ways :P
I really hope the sirens of impending doom are installed on the Stuka's in CoD! |
Wir, Zerstorer!
:) Bf110C-7 obly and forever! Untill Bf110E-2 will come... |

Ummm .. He 111 .. I've griped to Goering that i need close support so all you 110s and 109 better stay close, i want to see the whites of your eye!
He111. |
1) spitfire or hurricane (Haven't decided)
2) 109 3) Bristol beaufighter. |
109!!!!
|
Which version of the Ju 88 do we get? I really like her in IL2, but I seem to remember the version that flew during the BoB was still having considerably teething problems.
For the German side, I would really have loved to have the Do 17 Schnellbomber flyable. They did some daring low level stuff early on, which is the way I like to fly bombers (suicidal, I know). |

After that the Heinkel 111, of course, beautiful plane;) http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...-bomber-04.png Does anyone know if that's Franz von Werra's lion, or were they just popular mascots? :) |

There's an awesome story that Raul Lufberry went AWOL for a whole week and when he was finally discovered bar-hopping in the bistros and restaurants of Paris, he was taking a stroll with a wine bottle in one hand and a full-grown lion on a leash in the other, but i don't know if it's confirmed or simply a legend. What most people agree on as reliable information however is that the lion's name was Whiskey  |
Hurricane with the Canadian 242 squadron codes on tail so the bastages in the bombers I just raked know who too blame! Neck on swivel watching for the 110 or 109 escort at all times tho.
Wish me luck, I'm always in need of that! |

as a child i was just mesmerised by its shape. i can remember coming home from primary school to my working prop, working gear and control surface 109G model in 1/48 size, and sometimes just lying on the floor staring at it. i chose it from the shop, my father helped me build it. keep in mind the internet simply didnt exist, computers were certainly not in the home and all the aircraft info i could get was in rarely bought magazines. the 109E with the blue sides and black top? evokes memories of those times, all these years later. heheheh in another style of analogy, metaphor etc.... the spitfire was the barbi doll blonde and blue. yeah, nice. Yawn. the 109 was the bigger hipped, bigger chested raven haired dark eyed smoldering mystery with ruby red lips.... .... just so much more intoxicatingly attractive? :) |
Quote:
IMHO the spitfire is still the most glamorous aircraft ever and the 109/190 the most brutal looking war machines. |
not to forgett the CoD AI Beufighter will be an IF , a pure nightfighter version. Not the 'brutal' fighterbomber of later years as it is better known :)
