Do-17z found!!
There are NO 17z left, even the few pieces remaining of them do not add to 1% of a complete aircraft
One of the most important aircraft in the BoB, and nothing was saved. But now...! http://www.wessexarch.co.uk/files/im...scan-wa_02.jpg |
S!
Finland had those, donated by Hermann Göring. The planes were used, some had been in BoB. But in general the planes were in very good shape. After excellent service in FiAF the planes were ALL scrapped(peace treaty, Russians demanded we have no bombers) along with all other bombers we had, including Ju88's, Blenheim's, Pe-2's, SB-2's, IL-4's etc. Really sad that none of them were kept. Only one Blenheim IV is in museum, fully restored to wartime colors. |
|
Excellent news! This will be the only extant Do17 in the whole world. The RAF Museum - Cosford will do a fine job restoring it too.

Wow, what a find. I truly hope they can recover and conserve it like should be.

S!
Could not agree more, to preserve these machines for the coming generations to tell the story. Regardless the side they flew for, these machines present the pinnacle of technical achievements during their time. Really a shame so few remain of those built. |

But I thought there were Do-17Zs in museums, since it was a common aircraft. |

dornier in finland in 1943. i like dorniers, but in 1940-1941. i dont know why the luftwaffe don't use the hold dornier for the mistels. the ju88 is a waste for be a bomb plane |
Will the aircraft be restored or stabilized and preserved as is?
|
Zakkandrachoff, the Ju88 airframes that have been used for the Mistel were generally so old and worn that they couldn't be used for normal duties anymore.
About the Do17: Amazing find! Can't wait to see that one being recovered! |
By the way, does someone know what is the inscription stenciled on Do 17 Z access hatch "Zurück um den..."?
Info needed for some (next?) future SoW skins ;-) Thanks in advance! |

New news!
http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/...on-project.cfm And yes, I changed my name :D http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...Z_WIP_01-1.jpg |
I'd imagine there are plenty more wrecks like this, coming to light, as sonar improves, and more people are using it.
Looking forward to the rest of the story. |

Ah so it's in salt water. That's terrible for duralumin and other alloys based on aluminum. I don't hope so, but it could break apart while they attempt to surface it. I once took pictures of the remains of a Jumo 211, found in the Waddenzee north of The Netherlands.

Engines are probably mostly gone. The good news is 17z's where built before the war, so material is better quality. |
Do we know if this is a war grave? did the crew escape?
