Thoughts on AvP
Please share good and bad.
From my eyes the demo is based on beta code; the explosions and blood spray have nowhere near the number of particles i would expect see in a gold candidate, blatant missing control options (most likley removed in demo to stop persistant crashes) like crouch. I would consider these minor probelms for a demo but the matchmaking failure was the biggest probelm. These aside the gameplay was smooth if a little jerky due to lag, stealth kills were gloriously bloody, the sense of fear when playing as a marine makes for a very satisfying game. I could say more but i'm not working on this game so their not getting my professional opinion for free |
A lot of us have writen about our views on AvP in the "Response from Anton" thread which has become the stealthy unofficial AvP thread. Not sure what the 1C company people would think about a OT thread clearly dedicated to a game from another publisher. This could get deleted?
|
Well as they don't seem to care what we think you'd probably sumise that the same would be true of this!!
As for my opinion on it, yep I like it it's been well thought out in terms if gameplay, individual characteristics, weapons etc. I think if you take it as a flavour of the actual game then yes I'm looking forward to the actual game itself. Take heed 1c, if we can't get our kicks here we'll happily go spend our money elsewhere. Look at this for f 's sake, a competitors game is openly being discussed on your IL2 site. What does that say for you? Your once loyal fanbase is starting to break. If we're happy we'll tell as many people as possible, but rest assured we'll tell more people if we're not which I can only guess at is most of the people who bought the game ( special sympathies to you xBox players) Soapbox now put away under the stairs!! |
I hope you are right Gilly, we have a great comunity here which has gone beyond just IL-2 BoP. We should be able to talk about OT subjects and if 1C don't like and delete it, then we should leave and start our own forum.
|
I would be surprised if 1c even knows this forum exists. I am sure bop to them is last quarter figures. The game has been dropped quicker than a hot potatoe. I won't be stopping playing bop in a hurry but can see cutting back with bad company 2 and avp looming.
On avp I agree it really needs a crouch option. It doesn't seem right sitting in the rafters with a predator and not being able to crouch |
LOL WTF? IL2 BoP is not 1C's problem, as we've established in countless other threads. Nike-it obviously checks the forum routinely and hasn't shut down the unofficial AvP thread (or this one for that matter, although if it degenerates into a 1C slanging thread, that may well change). I for one think that is pretty cool - he seems to let mature discussions go on...
On topic, I'm loving the demo and have the game pre-ordered off the back of it. The only problem with the demo is that it's incredibly hard to get a game if you're on your own. If you have even one friend with you there's no problem...the game steadily reduces the number of players it's waiting for until it gives up and launches the game, which is fair enough as you can't join in progress so it gives people a chance to join. I can't say that until last night lag had been a problem for me, which is surprising as it's powered by GaySpy, which always raises cause for concern. And when lag is a problem, it tends to bring the whole game down rather than make me suffer an unplayable game. The voice comms seem particularly good for PSN too. I can't say personally that I think the game needs a crouch. I was slightly puzzled by a lack of option to look down the pulse rifle sights, but kind of like the fact that you can only shoot it from the hip. My only regret is that I've got stuck in a marine rut now, due to not fully understanding the other 2 species' controls (I only learned about "focus" yesterday), and there are far too many good alien and predator players on now for me to have fun trying to learn them... I'm not particularly impressed by the graphics, but they're functional. The sounds are spot on though, which is more important for this franchise IMO. And the atmosphere of being a marine in a map full of competent alien players is spot on. I especially can't wait for the survivor mode, and some larger player online battles, and team based battles... EDIT: check the official site for some sweet trailer videos (they're probably on YouTube so I could embed them, but TBH - I CBA :P And in other news...The Ridlster returning to form - yes please! :) Quote:

Hopefully they'll understand that this is a community and that people share common interests. Then again it might get deleted because most public forums seem to be run like police states.
Anyway.. AvP  What 'States said. There are some nice subtleties, the torch showing up aliens (and little else) and the aliens use of the dark. I just mastered the block/counter which can surprise the hell out of people who are expecting an easy lunch. Think that the Infestation (12 marines 1 alien, and as the marines die they turn into aliens) and the Predator hunt (12 marines 1 predator, if you kill the predator you turn into him and theres only ever 1 predator) sound like they could be really good online. I'm waiting till I get some trusted opinions off here before I buy tho.. tight. |

As for AvP I thought the same as TC initially, obviously grahpics wont be up to par as it is a demo and therefore wants to cut on size as much as possible. The only control I feel is missing the a precise aim mode for the marine but the pulse rifle is accurate enough not to need it (ive just been spoiled by cod/battlefield/ofp, the left trigger aim right trigger shoot is imo the best way) and they could've put another attack button on B for the alien. hopefully in the full game you can swop the triggers and bumbers for the alien. Not really spent enough time with the predator to offer a valid opinion |
I only recently reinstalled and played through the original AvP on PC and having played the demo I'm a bit on the fence.
Visually it hasn't come far enough, even the PC demo doesn't look that great. The best thing about the game is the sense of atmosphere (which was essenitally just carred over from the decade old PC game) and things are at their best when it's just Aliens V Marines. Which is why I'm skipping this and waiting for Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines...if it ever gets released. |

In player/private matches you can set the species balance, hope a couple of the varients will lock out some species too.
Anyone up for trying to get 8 of us in a party and get some private games going. 2 marines v 6 aliens etc |

Any PS3 players fancy ganging up for some organised demo action? |
So I'm at work (I work as a web dev/it in a school) and went to the 'bat cave' - a room at the back of one classrooms where we keep all kinds of stuff - to get some discs and what to I see sitting on one of the shelves?...A sealed copy of AvP gold edition :D:D:D:D installing that right now!
|
Any Austrailians out there won't be able to play this.. It's been banned, too graphic apparently.
One thing I noticed last night is that if you turn the brightness down in game the whole thing looks a lot better. |
|
hey infinite i normally can get 3 or four guys together and we play marines vs alien etc i'll send a friends request

As for the demo itself, I think they messed up by releasing a DM map only... team deathmatch is where this game will thrive, as well as the specialist modes. Graphics are a bit lacklustre, but the atmosphere is pretty good, and the sound is quality..... there's nothing like ripping off a whole pulse rifle clip down a corridor when your motion tracker is bleeping like mad. Day 1 purchase for me I think. Apparently OXM magazine just gave it an 8/10, which isn't bad at all. |

I noticed SubaruGaz is on the demo an aweful lot too...he's gonna own come the 19th. |
Haha, i'm on it too much (When there are others playing)
Count me in for some organised action on the demo, what time/day you thinking of doing it? |
IGN have reviewed it on 360.. here
|
They reviewed it on PS3 too...gave it 8.5 :)

phil jupitus is in the game just read this on oxm.co.uk
"British comedian and Never Mind the Buzzcocks panelist Phill Jupitus has a surprising cameo appearance in Aliens vs Predator. In the March issue of OXM, senior producer David Brickley reveals that the comic visited Rebellion's studio for the day, especially to record one of the hidden audio diaries. These are found throughout the marine's campaign, and reveal some of the back story behind the Weyland-Yutani Corporation's sinister exploits" |

If you're still playing the demo on PS3, go download the new one ;) |
Heads up for those who havnt pre ordered yet that amazon have it up for £34.99. I reckon I am going to forgo the face hugger model and get that deal. I am guessing those 4 maps will be about 8 quid
|
just found this on game.co.uk regarding the extra maps for avp hunter and survivor editions
"The maps will be released one at a time for download on a weekly basis after the game launches. After this time they will be available to download via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network" |
it's fixed.. games all over the place.
And it only took 20 mins to download. (3 hours last time) |

Survivor edition isn't worth the extra money over the normal one. The Pre order skins on the regular version is a much better deal in my opinion so that what im getting. The extra maps will be mostly useless untill they are available for all to download. I remember I got the SE version of Lost Planet which had extra maps. I could never find anyone playing them online, every game was played on the regular maps. Then when they were available for everyone to buy as a download the extra maps were used much much more. |
agreed i will only be getting the version with extra skins i've already got a life sized face hugger model, even got special slime to make it look more authentic.
When avp comes out il2 will most likely become a game i only play by appointment from my squadron |
