Bulletin board :)

----BACKGROUND----

** Birth of Project **

- To be brief, I gave up smoking several months ago and I am proud of this. I have decided to use the money, that I would have wasted on smokes, to add a little excitement and life back to this game that I have followed for 2 years already, since il2 1946.

- Also, the Holidays are near and what better time to give?

- Furthermore, I dont think I have ever had a better time and communication with a gaming community as I have with this one. YOU GUYS ARE GREAT :)

** Idea Origination **

- The whole competition idea came to me after reading a comment from the " Who's the best pilot you've met in the skies?" thread. Hence, Ace of Aces PS3 Tournament.

- I noticed some of you received well my first "Beat me Reward" competition but I think the rest of you PS3 sim players were a little intimidated. So, instead of all participants waiting to play me, I want all you to be able to participate with each other.

--------------------- COMPLETE DETAILS OF THE RULES -----------------------------------------------
http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/t...dal86/logo.jpg
http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt184/edal86/FIN.jpg

* In case of a DRAW in any of the 30 minute Eliminatory Stage Matches or Final, I will host an extra 10 minute match for those who had the DRAW. Then, I will go to a corner of the map so I wont interfere in the DUEL. Then, those players who had the DRAW will engage and whoever's name (on the bottom of the screen) I read first that crashes or gets killed will loose the match and be eliminated.
- The same goes for me If I tie with any of you, TRK29 will host that extra 10 minute match (if it is ok with him) since we all trust him. In the case that TRK29 happens to be the person I tie with, then he and I will have to agree on whom we want to be referee.

- It is important for me to have all the rules ready before Tournament so there is no speculation that I am cheating. (I will not change any of the rules once the tournament has started)
- Also, all rules apply to every single participant including me, No rule will be Bent for NO ONE.

STATISTICS WILL INCLUDE:

* American Continent Player Standings (player name. kills, deaths, other)
* UK Player Standings (player name, kills, deaths, other)
* Rest of Europe Player Standings (player name, kills, deaths, other)
* International Killers (from players with most kills to players with the least kills)
* International Untouchable Ace (this will be done by subtracting deaths from kills)
* Tournament's Most Popular Plane (which plane players use the most) will list all planes used.

:)-------------------:)--------------------:)--- RULES IN FRENCH--:)------------------:)----------------:)

However, If you want to end up in at least the top 5, then you are going to have to practice more on Sim, if you see me online invite me I will gladly help you practice, that goes for everyone else.

So far it looks like this tournament has a future, If it continues like this it will start as scheduled, November 16, perhaps sooner If I get things to run as I hope. I want to allow players to see post so they can participate, also this allows extra time to practice.

Dont worry, I still need to post the FULL DETAILS, they are completed but will post around 3-4 pm pacific time

you should try doing one, some players just want to have fun and dont care about any prize like my friend kozzmo who rejected the $20 reward for beating me so that my previous competition could continue.

just participate, and practice with us when ever you see us around. Practice makes the master my friend :)

Just a suggestion: You could use Skoll's site to make a nice overview of the matches. You can keep using this, works just as fine, just hoping that site will come to some use, since it could actually work :). I can put the matches on the calendar for you.
I know it says it's just for XBOX, but there haven't been any XBOX matches set up lately, so I'm hoping Skoll won't be angry at me :P.

Mage_016 11-08-2009 08:11 PM

You can count me in too.

Im hoping that u dont have too tight schedule for this tournament. I have so random times when I can play. Best times r mostly at weekends.

kozzm0 11-08-2009 08:22 PM

I am in of course.

Will this be elimination tournament-type, or round robin

And are there rules for planes or does everyone just get their choice of spit, hurricane or la7?

I think the score should be the number of opponent's deaths, as that's the only way to make limited f/a work, and also because it makes it more interesting trying to push the envelope.

On the one hand, if someone crashes, it doesn't mean their opponent killed them; but on the other hand it DOES mean they crashed and their opponent didn't, which is just as bad, even if it's not intentional... if you're not shot down, you shouldn't crash.

I'm mentioning this cause I was online about 6 hours today and damned if everybody doesn't still love to crash, more now than ever, in those 3 and 4 player free-for-alls. Of course most of them were unscored kills, damaged wings, etc but there was still plenty of bad flying, including on my part, it's hard to avoid in dogfight mode.

also today was about the busiest I've seen yet in terms of matches going on, several at once most of the time. I could maybe find a few people to join this tournament. Not all speak English though.

<edit> nationality USA, time zone us pacific, GMT-8.

and hey, what happens if you win, do you give the prize to yourself?

Thank you very much for the offer, however, I wont take it because I want to keep this as simple as possible for all participants. Some of the participants have trouble with the English Language and I dont want to confuse them by sending them to other sites in order to know who or when they are playing next.

- Always check first page of this thread
- I will regularly edit the first 2 posts (I will use them as a Bulletin Board)

Vieras,
Glad you could join us. Dont worry about schedule yet, you will see that it will be very organized and strict, as well as flexible. :)

Kozzmo, for those of you that dont know him, is a great pilot and fast learner. I admit I under estimated him and he got the best of me. My latest defeat was against him, there is a video of this battle that I will post. Welcome my friend :)

What is your Nationality, and Time Zone?
Yes, I took some of your feedback from the previous competition. I will post FULL DETAILS in a bit.

*this is only to prevent no one decides to create multiple accounts se they can have more chances at winning and because I see that you created an account this month.

THIS GOES TO EVERYONE

Tryouts are only intended for to see that you can fly on SIMULATION difficulty. Furthermore, I will mainly be observing that you dont stall out, or spin out, all the time with no real reason to do so (example: if you stall out all the time and end up crashing 5 times or so, with no reason, then this will affect the statistics, this is what I dont want, since, your opponent's crashes = your kills)

* NOTE : if you have the problem mentioned above, please check the STICKY THREAD " A beginner's Guide to the Planes" by Ancient Seraph.

I played him today.

philabong2 11-09-2009 10:15 PM

hey guys, just a little question/suggestion here:
could we take the jets out of this competition. I may have a bias against them cause i dont fly them (i think flying a jet plane with no blackout/redout is kinda playin any arcade game... just my opinion) but matching a prop plane against a jet will make for either a total domination of the jet over his opponent or a match ending 0-0; if the prop flies well, he'll avoid the shots easily but might never get any clears shots at his opponent... I think this should be considered even tho these r 20min matches

any thoughts?

P.S.: Edal86-the details r small but i can see them perfecly

Hrok81 11-09-2009 11:14 PM

Wouldn't option A mean playing 19 matches before elimination

if so, option B would be better.

As for eliminating jets, I'd rather eliminate the I-16. But under the rules, it doesn't matter much. The jets have light ammo loads, if they just spend 20 minutes running away, well that's 1 point for not being suicidal, but the other 2 points forsaken for wasting the Luftwaffe's fuel without getting a kill.

After spending a 20 minute dogfight with 1941 planes against an I-16, my attitude towards I-16 and I-153 will be to just ignore it and fly around it. I'll just fly up to 3000 m right above it and dive, then let it watch me disappear.

No, Option A means you will only play with those members of your group (about 10 matches), it will be almost the same as playing each player of group 2 times on smaller groups (8 matches)

I agree, I-153 cannot be out turned, and jets cannot be outrun. they are extremes, 1. burn and turn, the other Boom and Zoom.

* against an I-153 you can Boom and Zoom, and against a Jet you can evade and turn quickly on his tail and try to shoot at him.

- So, I cant prohibit the use of any of the two because they could be part of someone's tactics.
(what I do when someone uses a jet is to use a jet myself, simple as that)

-BTW, I dont see many players using jets anyway (what do you guys think?)

- should I not allow jets?

(can anyone translate this to german in case he does not understand?)

Well, I guess I'm mostly on the game when you guys are asleep (GMT +1 = my time zone). I'm playing IL-2 since it came out. Yesterday I stood up untill 4 am and met a lot of people that are enlisted. Some may have seen me, like trk said. philabong knows me as well, we've also played together.
I'm flexible in time because Im at university :)
I have just one account - Beamjimmy - and when I crash in matches its never on purpose. When my BF109-K4 gets a hole in a wing it becomes pretty uncontrollable at that point (for me).
I didn't enlist because I think I'm an ace and can compete with the best guys on this list but just for the tournament. This is the first tournament I've seen for IL-2 and it gives a good reason to play the game and get into the community.
See you!

PS:
favourite map: dover at daytime - best weather settings
I prefer option B

Thanks, welcome to the forum and to the tournament.

** NOTE ALL PARTICIPANTS: Dont worry about time differences, all groups are separated so that all players in a group share the same time zone, this will make it easier to find them (Eliminatory Stage is only exception because it will be a mixture of all players, but eliminatory stage is a very short stage)**

Just one quick question though; are you going to wait till after the patch to start this up?
If the patch does as intended, it will definitely help with the scoring situation..

Mage_016 11-10-2009 01:06 PM

Edal u wanted to know favourite map, there is none but if I have to mention one:
Stalingrad city. Weather good and time at morning.

Rhah 11-10-2009 01:48 PM

Another thing regarding maps... it might be best to avoid any maps where one player starts over the sea, and the other over land (Dover, Sicily etc)
Because its easier to spot players over the sea it could give one player the advantage. Personally I find it quite difficult to spot players from above over land, whereas over the sea you can pick out the target a lot easier.

maninovka 11-10-2009 01:48 PM

Hi edal,
i vote option A

I understand - perhaps - english:confused:

Steyr_amr 11-10-2009 02:04 PM

I'm up for it if allowed

Northern Ireland
GMT + 0
Evenings and weekends mostly

As for the format discussion I don't mind which way it's run, better and more experienced people than I can decide that. If you notice me online PM me to commence the tryout whenever it suits you, even if I'm playing a difference game.

Spitfire23 11-10-2009 02:14 PM

Yeah i like the sound of A, :)

And regarding Jet fighters, no i do not think they should be allowed. Just incase you get one performing a boom n zoom

kozzm0 11-10-2009 03:07 PM

If there's only 10 matches, then option A is better. If the matches are 20 minutes, there's not much need to play two of them and against a total of only 4 people.

time-zone grouping doesn't work so great for me though... the time of day I'm usually online is mainly when players from Europe are online. Around 10pm to 7am PST which is 6am to 3pm gmt. Cause I work evenings, I'm on a different schedule than my own time zone.

Maninovka: konnen Sie das Deutsch vielleicht?

olife 11-10-2009 03:42 PM

edal86 your idea is very good
i m very interressed to participate and im ok for fight the november 11th between 8:30 pm and 23:45 pm in french time
is it possible ?
if it is not good i understand but i can't play after because of my work
exuse me for my bad english
thanks

InfiniteStates 11-10-2009 04:49 PM

I think the option that was the original sounds the best (I think it was B?).

As for jets, I would say ban them, and I-153s. I think we're all here for some quality WWII dogfighting action, and although those planes fall under that banner, they are at the extremities of the envelope.

They also are both beatable but it makes for a very boring game doing so.

Also, someone mentioned about the patch, and I think the strike match set up is an excellent workaround, so I don't think we need to wait for it. Especially as we don't know when it will arrive. But if it were to be deployed mid-way through the competition, I do think the competition should be reset...

EDIT: also, Olife ^ is a beast in the 153... lol

P-51 11-10-2009 05:16 PM

I vote for the more original one too! (B)
I say limit it to no jets and I-16/153 (that the one?)

- Yes, but this will work fine if you get to play 2 times against each member of your group (1 as local, the other as guest) this means that you get an opportunity to have an advantage 50% of the time (also this is why I am asking you guys to post your favorite map), understand?

- About Jets, I have seen enough posts saying not to use them, so I wont allow them. (too extreme boom and Zoom plane) I want to keep it fair for all.

- How about the I-153? This plane is also an extreme Turning plane (its the only biplane fighter on game) So I would think that it should be treated as the Jet has been treated, what do you guys think?

edal86 11-10-2009 07:24 PM

THANK YOU FOR YOUR VOTES :)

BY THE WAY, this Tournament starts Sunday, November 15. NO I, am not waiting for patch. This is why I created this rules about the settings.

Basically,
*in option A, you will play against more people (around 9 different players) before qualifying to the eliminatory stage, however, 1 time against each.

*in option B, you will play against only 4 other players (2 times against each, one as local, the other as guest) before qualifying to the eliminatory stage.

*** welcome steyr_amr and -olife, when you see me online ask me for tryout please.***
- you cant use Jets, and since the I-153 is in Jeopardy, you cant use it either until it is decided if it will be allowed in tournament or not.-

KOZZMO, I WILL CONTACT YOU VIA PSN MESSAGE ABOUT YOUR TIME PROBLEM
-if any one else has this problem please post-

miatar 11-10-2009 07:36 PM

I like the idea of option A but will go with the flow. Ban the biplane I say.

just to confirm if option A goes ahead Berlin favourite map/Uk is the location so GMT obviously;)

sorry, I forgot to post my favourite map. Dover.

philabong2 11-10-2009 10:08 PM

hey edal,
i dont really mind biplanes cause they're really fun to fly actually (had a blast against Olife the other day in a 1 vs 1 dogfight flying one of those), but I guess they fall into the same category as jets: where the only way to have a fair (read fun) game is to choose the exact same plane as your opponent, and i'm also guessing that the effect of g forces would limit the effectivness of manoeuvers used by pilots in real life (or when the patch comes in) which would make these planes alot "less manoeuvrable" (spell check )

And my fav map is Berlin, weather, good, time day

Cheers m8

P.S.: Once again great job, feels like this game's online mode really picked up this weekend, there was alot of ppl to play, and i think ur playin a big role in this game's second wind.
Salute /;)

I still need to know the favorite maps of most of you, please read the first 2 posts of this thread

maninovka 11-11-2009 01:12 PM

Hi mate,
my map is Dover (see and land). - weather, good, time day

I am not sure if i got it:confused: - if i am wrong i hope you will help me.
Thanks;)

P.S. - need patch because i have very bad look on hatsvitch - only three direction with my T.Flight Stick X - i dont understand why - i am worry

Rhah 11-11-2009 02:38 PM

One questions (to anyone really).... whats the alternate controller option for control pads... the one that puts the look-around toggle onto the trigger buttons?
After watching Edal86's video of his dogfight with Kozz, and seeing how easy he looks around (presumably on a flight stick hat switch) I feel like I'm at a serious disadvantage using the default controller layout!!

As for favourite maps... well, I'm not a fan of the winter maps, so I'd say Dover, Sicily or Berlin, dawn or dusk (it looks nicer) and preferably half decent weather

Try aviator setup with pad. With that u can use right stick from pad for looking around without that u have to push it down. I'm using that and it's working for me.

i tried it and i hate it because i like 100% throttle when turning but its hard to do that with aviator setup

Yes this is a great map.

I hosted 20 minute sessions (sim mode) on this map with limited F/A yesterday and had about 8 people in each match (good times) I had a blast got to play with philabong a lot. He is good. Nice addition to VAS.

TRK29 will host that extra 10 minute match (if it is ok with him) since we all trust him. In the case that TRK29 happens to be the person I tie with, then he and I will have to agree on whom we want to be referee.

Yes that will be fine for me to host the session.:-P

somehow i have a feeling i will be making an early exit from this tournament. there is a lot of great competitors and i haven't been flying very well lately, even with practice. oh well, this is all about having fun.

Thanks m8 - starting to get the hang of it here.
Cant wait till this thing picks up tho so we'll b able to do some "real" team battles flying along with other V.A.S. team members.

I only played a few team matches with any random wingmen; its fun n all but feels so un-coordinated, pretty much the same thing as a 1 on 1 df. Really looking forward to being someone's wingmen, executing team tactics, setting up traps, stuff like that. Maybe harder but so much more entertaining and rewarding.

sorry to disappoint you my friend, but I dont use a stick, I use the aviator layout. This is why I recommend it to all. By having freelook on the right analog stick and the throttle and rudder on the R1,R2, L1, L2, I can compare the ease of tracking my opponents to that of using TrackIr on the PC version.

I think I mentioned earlier but to confirm:
Map: Berlin
Conditions: Good/Daytime

Also how flexible are the tournament schedules? I know it could add an infinite amount of hassle to get everyone online at the right time but I expect we all have external pressures/commitments that if ignored would make coming bottom of the league and being named and shamed a stroll in the park!

miatar 11-11-2009 08:00 PM

I would not worry to much about not qualifying, instead think positively. Consider that there are 20 participants and of those 20, 16 will pass (so, only 4 wont pass). Try your best (this goes to everyone) it is more likely that you will qualify to the Eliminatory Stage than not.

- Think of it like this, you have an 80% chance of qualifying, is that not a big chance or what?

* recommendation to do well are:
- practice on Aviator Layout if you are not yet using it (watch my video to see why this is advantage)
- Be sure to visit this thread regularly, so that you dont miss any matches. (I have a feeling that some will forget about checking for news and will end up forfeiting a match or two)
- Add all of the Participants and practice with them under the tournament's settings (Get used to your map, and exploit any advantage it may give)

A thought:
I know many of you are excited about Call of Duty MW2 release, I also have a copy of this game already, but, personally, I am more excited about this tournament than playing CoD MW2 (I barely have played it). CoD MW2 will always have thousands of people ready to play (night or day), you will all have PLENTY, I MEAN PLENTY of time to work on increasing your rank. Please dont forget about this competition, get into it, practice.

Dont worry.

I believe the rules are well organize and cover most problems. I think, if we all follow them, this competition will run flawless. This is why I always type "Read the First Page Regularly Because I Will Post Everything There, I Will Use It As A Bulletin Board"

Does any of you have a problem with any part of the rules??

- the reason that I divided the groups like that is so that we can all find our opponents online more easy.

THE START OF THIS TOURNAMENT HAS BEEN MOVED UP 1 DAY (sorry for short notice, but the groups are now complete and there is no reason to hold the tournament until Saturday)
