1) Hartmann? dont know any others sorry.

2) Hellcat (all of his kills in hellcat i think?) not 100% sure though sorry.

3) Bader had no legs below the knee, making it possible for him to pull more G

4) No idea at all!! id guess...... very fast?

5) Frank was the nickname for the Ki-84

6) Mk1 generally had eight .303 browning machine guns

7) No idea what so ever (sorry)

8) Not really into the pacific theatre, sorry :(

2. It was actually a FM2 Wildcat, not F4Fs. (Tin Can Sailors is a good book on Leyte Gulf)

3. Yeah, he had part of his leg missing?

Your sure number 2 is the wildcat?

I don't doubt you because i know next to nothing on this theatre, but i remember watching some documentary and im certain its the hellcat he flew and got all his victories in.

The hurricane Mk1 didnt have 12 MG's either, they stuck with 8. the 12 guns were implemented into the MkII series, because a new reinforced wing could handle that many guns in the wing (as well as rockets/bombs/drop tanks)

Yes. The only US fighters at Leyte Gulf, were the US Navy FM2 Wildcats which flew off of the "Truck Carriers". F4Fs were kinda phased out in 44'. And Grumman started to focus on F6Fs and such, while GM created the FM1-2-3s (which 3s were just a prototype that I don't think actually got off the paper?)

The battle for sibuyan sea (part of leyte gulf yes?) the japanese fleet was sighted and attacked by torpedo bombers and dive bobmers aswell as fighters... hellcats. Im sure i distinctivly remember this.

I just dont have strong knowledge of this theatre at all so to be honest i dont have a leg to stand on. Im prob wrong though. I just remember thinking how odd it was that hellcats were straffing ships with MG's etc.

Im not doubting you one bit, you clearly know what your talking about and as i've said i really know nothing of this theatre other than what i've seen on tv as it doesnt really interest me as much as the european theatre.

Maybe the hellcats and wildcats both flew here?

Somewhere between part 1-5, it mentions FM2 Wildcats, at the Battle off Samar. That's where the Yamamoto, took on the Truck Carriers, and Destroyer Escorts, along with some other small ships. Kinda amazing actually. :cool:

From what i can gather the USS Essex was covering the leyte landing and did have hellcats. The MAJORITY of taffy 3 was made of of wildcats and avengers, but not all of it ;)

i have to stop here though because i REALLY dont know that much about it because its not my thing. Only what ive seen on tv and in a few books. Someone else is better discussing this one.

The Hellcats, were used as a cover. Since the Japanese didn't have many fighters at Leyte (5 total maybe!?), the Hellcats never saw action. Just wanna clarify that. :) The air battle that took place at Leyte Gulf was the Battle off Samar between FM2 Wildcats, and the Japanese Battleships.

Seriously FOZ, if you want to know more about Leyte. Read "The Last of the Tin Can Sailors". It's all about Samar, and Leyte. :D :cool:

the battle of the samar sea had the standoff between Taffy 3 and the Yamato task force didnt it? the guys on the USS Jonston (thats spelt wrong aint it?) were true heroes.

yup sure did. I know little about all this theatre which is why i dont really know if it was the hellcat/wildcat.

But taffy 3 was extremely heroic. The USS Johnston did an incredible job along with the USS Samuel B Roberts(??) in causing mayhem and damage to the japanese fleet.

yeh oh by the way i know tones on the pacific theatre so much that i know the japs coulda won the war if not for a few morons at midway

To be honest i dont think Japan would ever of won the war in the pacific, they would of just dragged it out for a few more years maybe? In the end resources and materials ran out and in america they didnt. From start to finish Japan was on borrowed time.

A very commited enemy though and loyal to the emperor of japan. A nasty enemy to go up against, very determined.

If it was the first "ace" then maybe someone during the spanish civil war? but that doesnt count as WW2 does it so that cant be right.

If its the overall top soviet ace by the end of the war then that erm.....

So if I'm following all of this, it sounds like McCampbell was stationed on one of the fleet carriers that didn't actually get to do much during the main Battle of Leyte Gulf. However, from the Wiki article it is clear that he was flying Hellcats during at least the Battle of Sibuyan Sea (24 Oct):
