The Goat's DLC review
So, you're thinking about downloading the DLC but want a bit of recon before sinking 5 bucks into the whole foray? Well The Goat went ahead and did that recon for you.
First, let's go over what the DLC will get you. 2 new planes: The P-47D and the Ta-152 H-1. 6 new single missions, all featuring the P-47D. Now let's talk about the planes. If you're expecting to gain an edge online with either of these planes then think again. The P-47D handles like a boat and climbs like a broken escalator. The Ta-152 is in just about the same. Also, you will not be getting a real cockpit with the Ta-152. The only practical applications that I can find for the P-47D would be for strike or CTA. For ground attack the P-47 can actually hold it's own. It will of course go faster than a bomber and has decent bombs and rockets. If you play unlimited ammo on strike then this may actually be a great plane for you. It also may be pretty fun to use in CTA. Considering that it has good bombs to destroy your parked enemies with and 8 .50 cal guns to also cause some damage... It seems like it would be pretty good. Now the Ta-152.... Sorry. I can't find much practical application for this one at all. It's got a decent amount of speed... But that's about all. If you're just an extreme fan of the FW series, then this plane will be for you. Now the planes aren't really worth dropping 5 bucks on unless you're just a fan of the airplanes themselves. (I am personally a huge fan of the P-47... So if I hadn't already earned the unlock code before the DLC... Then I would have dropped 5 just for my Jug.) What IS worth dropping the 5 bucks on though are the single missions. These 6 missions will add about an hour and a half or so of gameplay (If you fly simulator mode) I found all 6 missions a joy to fly. From just the normal bombing stuff... To taking on the new Ta-152's, to fighting off German rocket planes from transports that you are going to defend, they were all a lot of fun to fly. The missions don't take place in just one area. You'll be fighting across a number of areas (No new setting though), in your P-47D. None of the missions were too difficult... Maybe the last mission in Berlin could pose a slight problem... But nothing too extreme overall. I found all 6 missions a joy to fly. So a quick verdict: Worth a buy for those who want to stretch the single player game for another hour or so. P-47 fans and FW series fans rejoice! Not worth a buy for those who don't care about single missions and want a new plane that is going to actually cause a dent online. If this DLC was 12 dollars or so I would say it is an extreme ripoff and not worth buying. But if you ask this Goat... 5 dollars is just the right price. I'll easily drop 5 bucks to fly the Jug across Europe for an hour or so. |
Most useful comment I've seen on the DLC. Thanks.

Finally someone who brings his opinion about the DLC, AFTER he checked it out.
Getting annoyed by all those people who flame the devs for releasing it and asking 5 bucks. Hopefully the P-47 will fly like it should, after the update. I so love the P-47/P-51  |

thanks for the heads up goat thats just saved me 400mp :):)

But unfortunately... I never flew any real fighter planes in WWII. So it's a bit hard for this Goat to verify. Now the P-51... Once again... Never flew one in real life... But if it handled like that in real life... Then I don't see how we ever gained air superiority... Even over pigeons. |

lucky xbox people, i will gladly pay 5 dollars for 6 missions and the P-47, since I have ta152 already. 5 BUCKS IS WHAT I PAY FOR 3/2 gallons of gasoline lol. some kids here need a job or ask mommy for allowance raise, support game please.

Sometimes 5 dollars can be a lot of money if you don't feel the product is worthy. As for supporting our developers, I love what they have done with this game. But I think even the developers don't want you to spend money on a product that you won't enjoy. And I'm sure this DLC is coming to PSN. PSN DLC just seems to always take a tad longer... Or in some cases (Fallout 3), A LOT longer. |

Just kidding. I don't have the patience for that task. |
the DLC is out allready? i'll have to check the psn store today.
i'm glad the ta-152 as dlc, since getting those 100 kills would be a pain. now i can focus on the 109 g and k and the spitfire so i can get the birdfan, allied expert, and axis expert trophies (although it will still be a pain unlocking bombs for the fw-190f8) |

keep working on those fw 190 kills |

it always boggles my mind as to why the self-destructing xbox always seems to get more exclusive content than the ps3..... |

Quick question... If I have the DLC, and my friend doesn't, can we still play together as long as I don't use the 2 DLC planes? |
It's because the PSN store only updates thursday, while the XBL Marketplace updates more often.

Nice review goat, I already recieved the ta and p-47 through the gp arcade givaway...sucks no other planes for dlc, but missions for the p-47 sounds like my kinda download! cant wait to get off work...

Thanks for the review Goat, very helpful. You're a top notch contributor around here:)

More importantly, Oo-ray for the DLC! :D. Sounds like it's well priced and well targeted (I know a lot of you are onliners, but there aren't many of you relative to the total game's userbase) - will deffo be picking this up for sure, and crossing my fingers for a more involved single-player mission editor either in further DLC or the sequel. |

(im waiting for my MS point to arrive, and I want to know if the P-47 is going to make me a bit happy). |
That is a good review. I already had the P-47 from the pre-order thing, and love it. But like said, it flys like a refridgerator. It is, what it is, and that is a good dive bomber. It dives awesome, but be careful, it's climb rate kinda sucks, and ya better pull out of the dive in time taking that in consideration. It is fun in strike, it helped me gain the B-17. I used it allot in CTA too like mentioned, and it is fun for that. I battled a little in it, but I suck in air to air myself, but had some luck with it because it is fast. I would run out of the battle area, climb, and dive back into the battle area attacing someone in a dive. Hitting and then running like hell back out to set up for another assault. It did pretty good that way, but not a champ. It was fun, but ya aint gonna win the battle that way. Just about any other fighter can beat it in turns, and if it is assaulted from the front, that seems to be it's weakness. The engines get shot out pretty quick. it is a fun plane to fly, but, you got to remember you aint in a ferarri.. It's a boat... I still love it though and fly it fairly regularly. Even having it already, i still put out the $5 for the download just for the missions that feature it, and I'm not disappointed in that..
ADDENDOM: By the way.. In dogfighting with it, I found that I can make tighter turns if I chop the thottle to about 50-60%. It still wouldn't out turn many of the other fighters, but it did help. It's speed though is what kept me alive.. the "Hit & Run" approach to air battles, if you are any good, you might pull it off in the air.. |

Weakness: Everything else. You may could pull some kills off by finding enemies who are occupied with others. I can almost guarantee your deaths would be higher. It just can't compete in a turn fight. And unfortunately, that's what 90% of BOP dogfights are. |

Cant wait to fly this ship :) How are the guns? you say hit and run kind of works, but does it have the armament to do a boom and zoom? |

On a scale of 1 to 10. If a spit turns like a 8, a bf109 like a 6. what would the p-47 be? Goat, did you ever fly the 109 g-10? if yes, is it slower + worse turning than that one? the patch might give the P-47 more chance, because of the blackouts in continuous turns... i hope |

Not sure what the "Boom and Zoom" is. I heard the term, but not sure exactly what that term means. But, it sounds like what I am calling "Hit and Run"... Might be the same, and what I meant..

The Jug ain't bad. It's just not that good.
I'm ok with turning like a bus, but it seems really underpowered. Maybe I haven't gotten her up to her appropriate playing altitude, but about 5,000' I'm barely pushing 300mph standing on the WEP, straight and level. Thought I heard a lot of stories of P-47s dumping the nose and hauling ass away from trouble. Seems not to be the case so far. Even in a moderate dive at WEP I'm only getting 330-340mph max. That much mass with that big an engine ought to be racing gravity on the way down. But, on the plus side, I've managed to keep her flying a minute or so longer than normal, and with 2 more Spits than normal chewing at my tail. Guns are really nice. A quick burst can end somebody's day - which is good, because you've only got a couple seconds before your target realizes he's being shot at and pulls a turn that you have no hope of following. BnZ - all day, every day for the Jug. |

I'm wondering if it can out turn an FW at low altitudes. |

He can handle a lot of damages. I met a P47 one times and I put so many holes in that planes that I was almost able to see through the plane, although it was still flying. That's the Perfect training target plane :-P |

I would have liked putting holes in your brand new airplane
But unfortunately that it wasn't me ;) |
P-47 in one word: ridiculous
If this was really how it flew.. no way any pilots could ever make a kill in dogfight |
Thanks for the post Goat, not got the DLC yet but I will be doing as soon as I get the kids to bed. See you all in the skies.
|
Picked it up last night. P47 is a bit of a trick. The guns are great, if you got in front of me I could shred you to ribbons, but it does turn like a truck so I had to hit and run to use it.
Also ate the ground a few times as pulling out from a dive takes quite a bit longer then you'd think! Also stalls at some rather high speeds if you try and force a tight turn. It's a fun change of pace from my La-7! |

Just curious because it flew fine - though I will say most people never loaded the plane with more than 25% fuel online. I wonder if it's the extra fuel weight in BOP messing with us. |
Quote:
Its sad :(, it is such a nice plane, and it does not deserve this :(. I really hope the fix of the P-51 (the full fuel tanks), will also apply to other aircraft like the P-47, fw190 etc. |

$5 would be a little more than £3, which I would would pay for a hour or two of new missions, for this particular game. edit: I'm still hoping its a mistake on the psn blog, and that its going to show up for a lot less when it appears on the store later today. |

Well, if Pedro doesn't mind my two cents...I think his review is pretty spot on, but it should be mentioned for the PS3 players out there that you're NOT Getting the Ta-152 right off the bat with this, you're still gonna have to unlock it. Me personally, I'm a little disappointed but mostly ok with this, mainly because most everyone who has it has said it sucks to a greater or lessr degree. Just realize you're getting one plane and six new missions, wich IMO, were would've been worth the price of admission even without another plane.
Also, if it helps anyone, when flying the P-47, I've found it useful when turning especially at low altitude to keep the throttle all the way forward, as the plane seems to lose energy faster than most. Not surprising cosidering it's mass. Hope that helps. |
