I think this screenshot summarises my exasperation with CloD. The Heinkel 111 is a really nice 3D model and the self-shadowing we know is well done. The 3D model is arguably as good as anything in RoF, which is praise indeed. The skin is a bit rough, to be honest. But the terrain is offensively, hideously, jaw-droppingly unlike anything you would expect to see in England. I live there and the violence this representation inflicts on my green and pleasant land is rather annoying. The colours belong in some LSD-induced nightmare, not a flight sim from the second decade of the 21st Century. Other than that, it's fine.

Chips86 05-09-2011 05:33 PM

The colours are too weak, it looks like a watercolour painting. And take it from a man who knows, LSD induced nightmares run much deeper than mildly annoying colours :P

If i would hazzord a guess i would say he is using low ground detail.

Sertainly looks like it.

Maby even "tweaked" the colours to.

Well. You really know that the difference between this:

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/5011/14571769.jpg

and this:

http://i55.tinypic.com/1ovrc5.jpg

is the landscape quality settings ( and some ATI drivers problems ), right?
As both shots are from the same game. SO, would you really say the same about the second image?

HenFre 05-09-2011 07:57 PM

Very nice picture Ailantd :) Can you tell us what the ingame settings are?

I would really like to see some screenshots of the german airfields in France especially the ones at Cherbourg, Le Tourquet, Sempy and Neuville.

Hope some one will take the time

Best regards

Henrik

RocketDog 05-09-2011 08:04 PM

The main cause of the difference is the time of day. Clod looks better at sunrise and sunset than it does nearer the middle of the day.

I wouldn't hold any breath in anticipation, there are quite a few inadequacies in terms of detail at many airfields, I did take a look at Le Touquet myself and it is nothing more than a grass strip with some fortified aircraft parking......no hangars or buildings at all.

philip.ed 05-09-2011 08:43 PM

Heinkel picture=France, probably on lower settings.
Spit pic=blighty with high settings (although, to look like England, trees need to get darker in the distance, and hedgerows are needed!)

Hope we can remedy this shortcoming when the moderation tools become available.. Or just use the FMB..

I did that screenshot, you can see my settings below.

The airfields are empty usually, just some default buildings, you should be in a mission to see them lively and with vehicles, objects and extra buildings.

With the Full Mission Builder you can put there whatever thing, hangars towers, vehicles, ...

Thank you for the screenshots Les. The airfields look ok, but Le Touquet will need a serious make over to look it like it did in the summer of 1940..

Anyone up for some closeups of these airfields?

Also I can see on the map that there is an airfield close to Sempy and Le Touquet, but can not quite make out what it is called. Does someone know?

Since that the last beta patch broke the screenshot key I was using imprint key and paste in Windows Paint, then size down and save.

So I dont have it in my screenshots folder, sry.

F12 is the default Steam screenshot key. Works just fine. :)

Buchon 05-12-2011 01:58 AM

Oh, I have everything that I can disabled in Steam.

But in game I just redefined the screenshot key to F12 in controls settings and works again now.

Looks that there a conflict between Windows and the game interface, thanks anyway :)

I have no problem at high altitude or over water.

Over terrain at mid altitude has you can see in the screenshots I get 30-40, the game is very smooth over 30 FPS, is not like in a shooter that you need 60 to obtain smooth gameplay.

Over terrain at low altitude in open zones I have arroud 30 however over dense trees zones or cities I get down to 20, over 20 FPS the slowdown is noticeable.

I can play the game very well just not getting close to big cities, and not busing my CPU with to many planes.

Thanks Lensman, but my problem is that when I record a Track and play it back, I'm stuck in cockpit view (which I have on in the realism settings) no keys seem to get me out of it. How do you get the external views and control where the external camera is relative to the ac or do you have to record with an external view?

In Il1946 even if I record in the pit I could still playback in flyby and external views, cannot figure this out in CoD.

Before you press 'Play', when on the Track Player menu screen, select 'Edit Views' from the list on the right hand side of the screen. This allows you to change camera views when playing the track.

If your game is like mine though, when the track loads up you'll be presented with some bugged-out view of the landscape. So what you'll have to do is press F1 to go to in-cockpit view, then select as usual whatever other view/s you want from there.

SEE 05-15-2011 01:23 PM

Thanks Les, you have described the problem I had - I checked 'edit views' before pressing play and ended up with a 'terrain view' so gave up in the end - many thanks for the heads up - appreciated!

Sokol1 05-15-2011 03:10 PM

SEE,

Try this:

Start play track without EDIT VIEW, then hit ESC, ticked EDIT VIEW an go back to play.

Turn on the pitot heaters when flying in or near clouds to correct your altimeter problems, airspeed gauge can be affected too.

Also, when flying in aircraft with a carburetor, turn on your carb heat. I flew through a cloud yesterday in a G.50 to see what would happen (there's no carb heat on the G.50) and sure enough, shortly before exiting the cloud my engine seized. ;)

Thought i'd go play with some specular texture and config elements today.

Some elements are increasing the vivid nature of these planes, some making them a bit too shinney \o/ bordering on metallic LOL.

In motion things looks really really nice like this. heres a few hastily taken shots.

shadows get a serious boost too in a good way. also i believe when the viewing angle reflection angle are just at that special moment it produces a semi flash of light which ive seen at distance with these changes, very striking it is.

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/...h_67d283ff.jpghttp://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/...h_2ac589cf.jpghttp://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/...h_e43cad3c.jpghttp://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/...h_fd395ebb.jpg

http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/...T/d4256afe.jpg

But.. hold on. lets expereiment with what we might like to see. and some realistic sentiments on reality. then some artistic licence to the shot.

heres a photoshp tonal adjustment of the last pic too. interesting. How good does that look with such a basic change. ? we need a POST processing HDR filter that does that !!!!! OR ! some external lighting changes within the config files. now where are they.... o¿o let me at 'em, let me at 'em !

Wow, that really makes a big difference. I agree that the game seems a little too unaffected by shining parts. In real life, we all know that even something as small as a watch reflecting the sun can be blinding even at a distance. This is often what pilots looked for when scanning sectors, a reflection from nearby aircraft. The default game has few of these moments, whilst the first photoshop edit you made looks REALLY good. It makes the original look like it's been viewed through sunglasses. The last image is Wings of Prey :p but seriously the second one... photographic!

Thanks for sharing, I'm interested to see what you develop from experimenting with these parameters in the future :)

If you meant my shots, it's moonlight wich makes paint looks like it's illuminating.

Here's my first shot

Thought I'd go for a bit of the dramatic effect.

Set up a vic of stukas to attack an airbase at dawn. Post-processed in photo-shop.

If anyone can tell me how to hide UI before taking a shot, that would help immensely.

Very nice! But damn, the game's rivet opacity is quite harsh, isn't it?

More heinkell images

Since I can't seem to figure out how to bomb from anything else for now, here are shots from the Heinkell.

BTW- Please let me know if you guys want me to move this to a seperate thread and keep this thread just for un-touched photos.

On a side note - I would love to see eventually, some type of replay functionality (ala WOP's moving camera) with a vintage post-processing filter - so we can replay our favorite moments.

Just had a perfect bomb run against a railway station in Hastings (you can see the impact crater under the starboard wing)

You can't see it but this guy had just about all his control surfaces destroyed and still outmaneuvered me. Then I managed a good burst from 10 o'clock. Look close at the canopy and you'll see a hole next to his head. That sorted the bugger out.

I honestly don't know mate as I have only ever flown CEM, however I think that may be the case
as auto will set the mix, and in CEM if its too rich it burns orange/red and when correct its a loverly blue.

Crazy furball off the coast off Ramsgate

Spotted a squadron of Blenheim Mark I's with Spit escorts.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_h...523_224436.jpg

Headed for the Blenheim's ignoring the escort
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_h...523_230652.jpg

Couple of cannon rounds took care of this one.

Spits decide to join the party - 6 vs 6
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_233420.jpg

Found this gentleman stalking one of my schwarm
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_234148.jpg

Too bad he wasn't paying any attention - allowed me to sneak in behind him
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_234154.jpg

Really close.

Out of the sun
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_234941.jpg

A couple decide to bail for Ramsgate and the protection of it's AA. This one was about to make it down when I showed up. I didn't touch him since I over shot, but right after I passed he flipped into a spin and couldn't recover.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_235158.jpg

This guy made it down safely,
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_235231.jpg

Or so he thought. Since the AA around ramsgate was eerily quiet, I took my schwarm down for a strafing round. Can't tell if I'm actually getting any hits.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_235304.jpg

Loop over for a couple of passes
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_232002.jpghttps://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_h...524_232019.jpg

Finally knock him out.

Post-processed screenshots

I'm starting a new thread for screenshots of COD that have been post-processed. I don't want to clutter up the regular screenshot threads with it.

Here are a couple to get started. Sometimes I can't believe they are from a game.
