Well
I've had no crashes in about one hours play.
It seems to me that a considerable amout of ground effect is now present when landing.
When damnaged on the ground I had a total doubele cockpit in the spitfire IIA Al the controlls doubled up i think normal and single decals?
I've seen maybe some improvement on performance esecially when looking back while taking off at the dust I used to have 17 fps in that situation now its 24.
The warmupin the siptIIA is differnt to it wil rev up some but not to take off power immedaetely.
Mirror is still unusable.
It seems to be easyer to pick up palnes at a distance.
I dint see ghost planes up to now.
So performance wise some but not really notisable.
Settings 1920 X 1080
Always 64bit
No stutters (asbefore)
Two freezes in one hour both .5 sec.
Lookingaround seems to be more fluent.
FM feels like a plane to me :) clear decrease in performance of brit planes.
Trees are stil shimmering as are the shadows.
VIsually it dint change any in my opinion.
Game was smooth before and still is.

Will update.

Cheers,

Niels

I would like to know one thing about the CTDs.

On a different board the discussion seemed to indicate that pre patch the CDTs concerned only 32bit OS (I rarely experienced CDTs on my 64bit OS).

I would like to know if those who now experience CDTs on their 64 bit OS did this also before the patch.

While I've not installed the beta, and won't, I am running Win 7 Pro 64 and always had the CTD problem.

kendo65 05-05-2012 10:44 PM

Just had a mid-air collision with a 110 in my Spitfire 1a. The 110 was totally destroyed, Spit unscathed.

Previously I experienced my Spitfires being destroyed in mid-air collisions while 109s/110s and Stukas flew on, so a definite improvement here Devs. Good work! ;)

No crashes. AA is working. Performance is better here.

Derinahon 05-05-2012 10:46 PM

My observations after 2 hours offline in a Spitfire Ia; some already mentioned, some not:
  • No audio from rear speakers. I have a 4.0 setup. The sound returned once I removed the patch.
  • 90% sure the airframe stress noise can be heard with prop set coarse.
  • I also have the Spit throttle problem. Jumps to +5.
  • FPS drops dramatically with bullet hit smoke.
  • Tons of glare on the Spit prop with sun behind; i thought it was white smoke a first.
  • Prop seems to stutter visually. Might be me, but it looks odd.
  • Ground textures lower quality?
  • Instruments low res at normal zoom.
  • Grass looks sparse or not drawn as far from the camera. Could be my perception, but again it just looked odd. Definitely struggled to see grass when flying low.
  • FPS increased dramatically over built up areas.
  • No CTD's (didn't have these previously)

We seem to have traded a lot for higer FPS. I've removed the patch for now, but looking forward to the release version.

GOA_Potenz 05-05-2012 11:01 PM

Well after a few hour testing what it should give us a increase of +50% in performance, all i got is the same as before, it is very sad that patch after patch is still the same and with every new patch the game is more cut out less features and more bugs, this is just another placebo patch with nothing more than empty words, EIGHT YEARS, EIGHT YEARS and we paid for nothing hope devs had much luck stealing money for more fools like me with that sequel, hope for the better that this project will be shoot down a 1C give us any other game for the 49 dollars we had paid for this piece of **!

AH i almost forgot my report on the patch

NO FPS INCREASE
BAD TEXTURES

I have to say I do have better fps with this patch. Enough to notice. Stuttering is still there and the shimmering is even worse than before. Shimmering is actually really hideous. :(

Edit: Launcher crashes every time I use a res that is not the same as desktop.

AbortedMan 05-05-2012 11:28 PM

Spits Ia and IIa's throttle is completely screwed up...how did something so obvious and seemingly easily configurable get missed?

Why am I able to maintain 2k feet per minute climb at 230mph with just 20% throttle? It seems the throttle scaling has been shrunken down by 60%. 10% throttle sends you flying out of the hangar immediately. Almost impossible to operate when you don't have a HOTAS throttle system and you have to use the keyboard to adjust throttle in 5% increments only.

@ KG26 Alpha:

I have. I'm just not sure that I can be arsed anymore. Sorry.

mxmadman 05-05-2012 11:56 PM

Well I'm experiencing higher fps, tons of new bugs,

& THE SAME STUTTERING! Which is what annoyed me the most before.

If you want me to send logs & test your game, send me a contract for my wages. Until then I'll be explaining to my sim-pilot buds that the game is still a long way off.

Thanks.

Red square on startup as saw some few others reported.

Water flat now. Was like that when originaly installed the game but with setting my g-card setting AA to overide ingame it worked, but now nomatter what i try it stays flat. Really impossible to fly over the water low as you dont se the surface and crash.

Not flown online yet, so will try later if still get CTD's. Just can't fly propperly with flat water.

yes,, that huge red rectangle which seems to last a long time before you get the moron with the eye problem.. why can't we just click on the game and fly what's up with all the obstacles to starting the game? I mean really, what all that stuff,,,?

btw, I never had ctd until I applied this patch then I was flying and got a launcher error ctd... I was like wt....h.. ?

No CTDs in 4 hrs online playing
Lots of net lag online, stutters on other AC only, from net lag
Cannot get "Original Textures" to turn on the 109. This pixelated wing is more like "High" setting
Weathering not working on 109

Flying Red on ATAG, 4 launcher crashes within a 90 minute span.

I've un-installed & re-installed the entire game...still with the launcher crashes...

My view...1C released this knowing there were many issues to quiet the whiners and cries re: "when do we get our patch...waaaaaaaah" If people would STFU and let the dev's do there jobs unmolested we would all be happy at some point. I don't care if it takes two years...just do it right.

What we have now is infinitely worse than what we had...

Steuben 05-06-2012 12:44 AM

For me it would have been an improvement until i got launcher crashes all over the place! Then i quit it!

Ah could have been so cool if it worked!

Back to Napoleon Total war III Lordz MP Mod then!

RazzyMan 05-06-2012 12:49 AM

Very Dissapointing

What a total shambles.
Worse than ever and my first CTD's experienced in this game.
Textures in the environment worse than before
AI total BS
FPS all over the place (maybe nominally faster but up and down erratically)

Good bye. Good luck to those that persevere.

hc_wolf 05-06-2012 01:28 AM

Bomber vapour trails dissapear after 30 sec.

Plane and bomber vapour trails at a heaight of 8000m dissapear after about 30 sec and don't come back. :(

nice beta.

No crash yet :)

I also think finally they decided to release the patch without being finished due to pressure. The statement "that" and "that" and "that" bugs are only three days of work, but releasing now is a clear signal on this.

My experience:

- I´m experiencing the red square when starting the game.
- I have not experience any fps improvement. Still the same with the same stutters.
- Still lot of stutters when fighting bombers.
- CTD after ten minutes of offline flying. Before I only had these when flying online every two sorties.
- Sometimes it seems the low poly cockpit exterior model is rendererd inside the cokpit.
- Plus all the other bugs already mentioned.

- I like the new sounds though.

Returning to the previous version and lookng fordward for the next alpha/beta/gamma patch.

Stealth_Eagle 05-06-2012 01:40 AM

Sorry that I can't post a picture of it but in the FMB, text "bleeds" through the object tab thing. Overall haven't played the patch much but it seems to be a decent improvement in FPS for me at least. Tomorrow, I'll do some more testing but most likely I'll roll back since I miss the trees and grass while flying through the skies in my Tiger Moth. Best of luck getting bugs found and eleminated.

Sorry was a bad test, I tried it on a map where I had wind and didn't account for it.

Bomb sight is somewhat more manageable than it was in previous version, but it's not very accurate.

Blackdog_kt 05-06-2012 01:49 AM

Most of the bugs i see being reported are what B6 already described: a problem in the texture loading routines.

Fuzzy gunsight reticules, blurry textures and letters in cockpit dials and markings? It's all down to the same thing, which is a known issue that's being worked on apparently, otherwise it wouldn't be in the patch notes.
Same for lack of weathering and small caliber rounds damage decals.

What i'm trying to say is, let's keep to reporting what is not known instead of repeating what is already known and making it harder to spot what slipped by. For example, it's much more useful to tell them if we still get launcher crashes and send them the logs, or report something that's supposedly fixed and still behaves in a broken manner, than going:

B6: "Here's an alpha patch. Features A,B,C are temporarily disabled because we haven't completed them yet."
Us: "Hey, thanks for the patch, but A,B and C are not working for some reason."

:-P

I don´t think the low resolution textures inside cockpit are related to that texture loading. It can be seen clearly that geometry is also changing so I guess is related to some LOD problem, like the low cockpit model rendering over the high cockpit model or something like that.

I never had ctd's until this patch... grrrrr...
will try to send the log file,, looking for better directions on the log file...

Launcher crash... ctd..!

I sent my log file and dmp files.. good luck,,,
if anyone figures out how to stop the launcher crashes!!

SiThSpAwN 05-06-2012 03:24 AM

Just make sure to send the log files, all this data will be good for them compared to what they were getting in their testing environment... we wanted this patch, dont complain too much, it is beta... beta test away...

It`s an ALPHA patch, not beta.

ReconNZ 05-06-2012 04:32 AM

Bug still exists on joining servers - (ATAG beta servier in this case) where you get into the server, but no flags show so cant select a side. Intermittent bug, happens maybe 1 in 5 joins.

tk471138 05-06-2012 04:51 AM

Beta testing report....

First of all thanks to the devs for allowing us to get our hands on this BETA PATCH (which means it WILL have bugs, and its our job to find and report them, not to bitch and moan about how their are bugs in an optional BETA patch

I do agree with some who say that things are not much different between this patch and the previous "stable" version (or in this case the 1.05 final version)

i do get the red box when i open the program but that seems to be a minor issue or superficial at best...

the first time i really gave the program a go, i had a ctd after about 15-20 min on a custom mission over England.
after that open program again and played the same mission, i was able to play and edit and replay the mission for more than an hour (maybe even two) before i had another ctd, which is an improvement from what i was experiencing prior to the beta.

other than that i guess this is a step in the right direction...

hopefully some of the known issues are corrected ASAP,

especially the small caliber bullet holes, since most of the guns so far are of the small caliber kind (7.92 .303 ect) i like to shoot a target some and then pause it and admire the damage i had just done, or even admire the damage that was done to me...

also with the log = 1 or what ever in the conf.ini (which i did) when the thing does ctd, is there a way to know if something was actually sent, is something supposed to pop up, and tell me to send it...cuz the times its stop responding and crashed, nothing came up indicating that a log file was sent or generated....

AA ssao vsync grass is all off as is the epilepsy filter (dont get me started) ..things like buildings amount & detail are set to low forest very low land shading medium, the rest are on HIGH or original screen res is 1920x1080

edit some have stated that you have been removing features and lowering graphics settings on the users in order to make such improvements....in fact this was already implemented in previous patches, instead of simply eliminating them from the program and lowering settings, how about adding in settings for the users themselves to change, instead of an across the board change where the user has no choice, even the user who can utilize the features with out any lag

pencon 05-06-2012 04:56 AM

I find the weathering has dissapeared and the slider makes no difference .Very minor lags now and again over the city but not much . Seems to hit a low of 20 fps with the ssaa and vsync turned off , Also the mirror comes and goes on the spit after i shut it off . I too get the red box on a black screen when I first open the game .Not big deals like the patch sofar . Big improvement over all . i7 860 2.8gz intel nvidia gtx 570 16 GB ram

In the regular patch they are much more, so it's better in beta-patch but they still exists.

Also get a sound bug, in Bf109E4 i get a endless gunfire sound (MG17).

No ctd so far, and a big improve of fps on my system.;)

Six months for this? Oh, come on. Dumbing down the overall textures quality and effects to get a slight FPS increase?

Much better frame rates, but I get a complete lockup of my system half through every mission, which I can only escape from by resetting my PC.

I've tried a complete reinstall and wiping the original directory, to no avail.

It's back to ROF then. I'm starting to forget why I bother with COD. I know it's only a beta release, but how long has this patch taken to be delivered? And for what?

I usually buy every IL2 release as soon as it's released, and COD as the Collector's Edition (which cost $AUS120). I think I'll wait way after BOM is in the discount pile, if at all.

how the HECK did the launcher ctd get past software assurance? I mean come on, it ruined the whole patch, it is not minor, it's the killer of COD... I can't speculate, but it is almost if someone wanted it to fail... if it is happening to 90 percent, if not 100% of eveyrone, then it's inexcusable... Someone really really really really totally totally royally epically failed..!

Black sceen/red square on startup
Low res. instruments
Spit throttle (1a&2a) not properly calibrated in game
FPS similar/marginally better all round
CTD's offline cured.

Cache cleared & game files defregged before patch. I5 2500k Sandybridge/ 570GTX/16gb DDR3.

This patch was clearly described as an ALPHA and installation was completely voluntary, anyone bitching should consider that. Judge on the Steam release but use this processs and thread for improving the game.

Or better in II War World sim as they promised one time.

Hurricane (Rotol) right wing graphics renders drawn OK, left wing has white, 1 pixel wide leading & trailing edge & edging around flaps.

[EDIT] My mistake. This was a skinning error & not a patch bug.

Hitting escape key to adjusts settings makes desktop appear. Can still hear game running however. Alt-tab-delete to exit.

27 fps on max settings. 27 on low. 27fps on every single combination I try. Extremely frustrated.

ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA - it's irrelevant. This patch is their 6+ month work culmination and we all want to see the results. They promised +50% performance increase and a lot of us don't event get any FPS boost at all. The game actually runs worse overall considering some of the FPS related features are actually shortcuts/cuts (low res cockpits, sparse grass, low res terrain, clouds).

No improvements here, the first beta in october was more smooth for me. No comments about how the game looks after more than 6 months (landscape first of all), but it's clear to me that Luthier does care less than nothing about CoD and The Battle of Britain. Sorry, really, to say this but...CoD is a joke, a bad joke.

About debugging? This is a matter for the fanboys team.

Personally i report (confirm) only this one:

352ndBushpilot 05-06-2012 08:22 AM

Got the same launcher.exe crash as before the patch. Took all the described steps, cleared cache, applied patch.

Mem usage slowly builds up, till 2,72 gig, then ctd.

Sent an email with the dxdiag and dmp file to the devs.

cheers,

I think you've hit the nail on the head with this comment. The devs hearts have never been in this project. The Battle of Britain holds no interest for them and CloD is now only a vehicle that carries them to BOM.

I saw black square cartridges sometimes, specialty at mid/long range, can be slow texture management.

David198502 05-06-2012 08:37 AM

ok something more:

no 109E4 version anymore (only 109E4/b and 109E4 B)

-i was playing online on ACG and suddenly, as i was crossing the channel, my plane disappeared completely mid air.

-ground textures:i use to have them on medium, but as soon i installed the patch, i put them on high to see whether there is a performance increase....well, after this disappointing try, i put them back to medium again, and they still appear very sharp.certainly way better than before the patch.the question now is, whether the devs have improved medium ground textures, or if the video settings menu is bugged, and im not able to reduce the textures again....

Havoc04 05-06-2012 09:01 AM

Well i played it for about 4 hours. Resulting comment is.. This is a PACIFIER PATCH. As others have stated there REALLY isn't any EYE POPPING results. I personally can't see anything that jumps out at me. Performance is the same TBH.

So i don't know really. I understand that it is a BETA patch and tbh the funniest thing was that in the abridged read-me MOST of the items that were/are responsible for fps loss are not included.

So in my eye's its 6mths of well....nothing
It appears that all the work seems to be funneled towards BOM. And where getting the wet end of the stick till the AMAZING ALMIGHTY BOM arrives :(

So yeah PACIFIER PATCH ftw.. Well done Luther and co.. Give us something to shut us up till the smoke clears LOL.

Wonder how long it will take for the REAL items to be included THAT actually makes a difference....

Regards

Hey guys I seldom write in here but im here to report my results. I just got myself a GTX580 4 days ago compared to the Gtx280 I had until then.

Prepatch the game went up twice in FPS and I was able to play on all HIGH settings and the game was smoother than ever! A real beauty!

Now after the patch these are my results (flying the 109 only)

1. Slightly more stutter when close to the ground (used to be smooth)

2. Trees seem to flicker more

3. Gunsight reticle in the 109 is low res

4. External Sounds are terrible, when canopy CLOSED while on the ground, I cant hear the plane next to me even if he is just a few meters away. When canopy OPENS I can here hear them just like pre patch (this might be a way of getting rid of the "sonar sounds")

5. Some sounds are gone. I cant hear my gears retracting, and when I get hit I dont hear any hitsounds. I just see the "fail message"

6. Flyby sounds of the 109 is changed to the worse. It used to be the sound of the beautiful Daimler Benz but now there is an additional sound (sounds like the external sounds of the Merlins have been added ontop of the 109s sound.

7. In cockpit, some instruments have gone low res and blury unless you zoom in really close.

These are the bugs I can remember now...
I see that some others have simliar bugs!

from experience, you cant hear a similar engine plane from 10 meters way both with canopy closed and open.

Cleared my cache.

Launched from steam. Starts up with a black screen with a red oblong at the centre. Thought the install was fubar but the game ran after about 30 seconds.

Confirmed the game was patched, right install nr.

The results are clearly much better for me. After taking up a Spit against 6 He-111s in the quick missions it was quickly apparent that the patch had significantly improved things for my system, I appear to have AA as well, although it seems to be much better for the cockpit (window frames are really smooth now, no jaggies) than for distant aircraft. Up close enemy bombers now are now visually very smooth. I don't get stutters caused by particles now where as pre-patch me diving into a formation of 6 He-111s with defensive fire rattling my windows would've been a bit of a slide show, but there are still some stutters that don't really seem to be clearly associated with anything.

My system is:

Q6600, 4gb RAM, GT9800 1gb, Vista32.

Flanker35M 05-06-2012 10:01 AM

S!

Did some testing I could as do not have the flight controls at the moment :( But some observations while flying Quick Mission over France. Actually managed to trim/throttle the plane to fly level :)

+ Better average and maximum FPS with VSync Off in Black Death at least.
+ Better average FPS with VSync On.
+ Less stutters except those mentioned in the readme (trees/grass).

- Some effects are missing, like the exhaust flames on Bf109E-4 for example(disabled for some reason?).
- Terrain can be seen through the Bf109E-4 throttle cord.
- Visual weathering does not work, at least on Bf109E-4.
- Bomb craters in Black Death can be seen through planes.
- Intruments look blurry, not all but some of them. Before were sharp.
- When plane hits ground the crater appears first and after a short delay the fire/smoke. Before was more or less simultaneous.
- Opening Console still gives extra frames at an average 15FPS or more.

Overall I would say the patch did improve some things, but still some work to do as mentioned in readme. Now it takes longer for textures to load in the beginning of track/mission, running again speeds up a bit. I have not experienced the conical smoke mentioned, looked allright to me. But again need to test more.

I'll try to get a picture of it later today, but I saw this bug which is repeatable at will:

If you are flying towards a cloud (dead centre in your reticle) and you open the cockpit and lean outside to the left or right, you can see the reticle overlaid on the cloud as if it were being projected onto it like a bat signal.

It's hard to describe so I'll try to get a screen shot.

Game now drops to desk top if i disable shadows.
i can still hear sounds but i cannot get back in game??????.
this is the biggest bug among the ones ive found guess it goes back on the shelf agian.

Helrza 05-06-2012 10:51 AM

Thanks for the patch luthier and Co.

Gained an extra 10 fps (runnin nicely at 40 :) )higher average offline with everything on med or high with the expections of: land shading, SSAO on low - clouds, grass, shadows vsync, AA Ep filter off.

I aint been able to have a good run today, so hopefully tomorrow i have a bit more of a run, but so far -

Gettin the red box on startup where the crosshair logo is supposed to be.

Some hoses in the 109, hurr are now windows.

Online (only tried ATAG server) i have found 2 problems.
1st - When i spawn on the runway, the game completely freezes, i have to shutdown via task manager.

2nd - When i enter the lobby of a server i sometimes receive a runtime error and game shuts down.

Im thinking these two problems are machine specific, and will be reinstalling the game tomorrow to test a fresh copy, just thought it might be worth a mention in case someone else has the same prob :)

Curious results for me.

Using the BlackDeath track my lower spec laptop with low settings has improved a lot, fps around 30-40%. I found with my laptop (ATI 5850 1Gb) that the Logo made a difference and taking it off increased my new average fps of about 120% to 140%. My High end Gaming PC (see sig) has suffered about a 13-15% fps drop.

On line with the Gaming PC I get much more stuttering when scanning over Ramsgate with TrackIR althiugh my fps at a few thousand feet or more are pretty much banging the refresh rate of 60Hz although inclined to drop more readily in and out of the 40s with action and nearby aircraft.

The Spifire MkIa is too slow as sea level (no time to check yet at altitude) and gives 248mph instead of 284mph, a whopping 36mph too slow.

The Spitfire MkIIa gives 270mph instead of 290mph, 20mph too slow.

The Huricane MkII gives 234mph instead of 262mph, nearly 30mph too slow.

The Spitfire throttle seems insanely sensitive requirong about 10% movement to get from minus 4 to 0lb boost and hitting a full 6lbs boost by about 2/3 throttle travel. Also the brakes don't seem to be very effective now and if you aren't careful to keep the throttle completely closed you will roll with them on when you start the engine.

I've attached some results in case they're of use to anyone (settings etc). Results like fps during Bomb Bursts were the absolute minimum noticed and generally a fair bit better on average.

Well, i'm not sure how it works out in a technical sense but i can tell you it's not new.

I've had this since for ever on my system, it just happened to surface for more systems with this patch.

I initially thought it was my low RAM (i got only 3GB of RAM and an Ati 4890 1GB graphics card) and it couldn't load all the textures in aircraft with a lot of details: it mostly happened to me on twin engined aircraft, bombardier stations and bombsights, plus the text and marking on the outside/wings of some planes, like the 109.

Well, the good thing is that now that it's a well known issue i can expect some kind of improvement :-P

Most people have had the issue resolved and many that didn't, eventually found out that it was fixable once they followed the usual patching procedure for optional patches like this one.

The official/final patches are automatically handled by Steam, but when installing an alpha or beta there's some more legwork involved to make it work properly. Here's what i do:
1) Verify file integrity through Steam: This makes sure i have the correct files for the latest official version, ie the one before the optional patch.
2) Defragment game files through Steam.
3) Go inside my documents\1c softclub\Il2 CoD\cache folder and delete all files within it and the shaders subfolder.
4) Extract the optional patch into the sim's main directory (if prompted to overwrite existing files, choose "yes").
5) Run the sim and wait for it to rebuild the cache i deleted with the correct files for the new version.
6) Run a quick mission and fly around for a couple of minutes to "force" it to load anything it might need to load.
7) Exit the sim.

From that point on, it's safe to launch the sim again, test and fly. I've been following this routine through all the Beta patches and each one has been an improvement for me.

Phazon 05-06-2012 11:47 AM

Control animations still animate at a different, much lower frame-rate than the game's actual framerate. Not really a bug, but every other flight simulator including the previous IL-2 game got this right. Should've been on the to-do list if you gonna be rewriting the rendering pipeline and all.

Volksieg 05-06-2012 11:53 AM

Overall I am rather satisfied....

I'm not getting the amazing fps boost the dev team spoke of but it is certainly a lot more stable. I very rarely dip below 20fps anymore, which was a constant problem..... though it has to be said that was noticed more often than not whilst flying through or near clouds and, as the clouds are off, that may not show any actual improvement due to optimization.

I can use shadows now, which is a massive improvement, as well as my native resolution (1600x900) which, obviously, improves graphical display.
(Switching them off doesn't give as much of an fps boost as one would suspect so.... I'm happy to have them, if slightly underwhelmed by the supposed amazing "boost" that was lauded constantly leading up to the patch). - of course I have also noticed that a lot of ground shadows/ cloud shadowing is missing so I do suspect that this is not so much a case of optimization as omission.

The only real bugs I have come up against is the much reported red rectangle at the beginning (Not really something which bothers me) and the also reported dim sites in the 109..... turning up the illumination seems to make very little difference.

Overall: I am very happy as I can turn on more eye candy and the game is certainly more stable.

I am a tiny bit concerned that all these months of "optimization" seems to have involved turning off the troublesome features and sweeping them under the carpet.

REALLY GLAD that I am getting better performance and better visuals.

REALLY DISAPPOINTED that this "patch" isn't really much of a patch at all..... bit like replacing Crysis 2 with Crysis..... still a great game but of course it runs better when you turn off all the things that were supposed to make it great.

I am giving this patch a 7/10. :) That said, of course I am majorly happy with it.... just not for the reasons I should have been.

EDIT Scrap what I wrote above. After further flying I am giving this patch -1 out of 10. This really is a joke and I would like to see some evidence that any work has actually been done on this game??? I am made all the more suspicious by the relatively small size of the patch... this is not the "Huge" patch we were promised and, from what I can see, all the dev team have actually done is take stuff out thus leading to a small improvement in performance.... at first... and then the performance degrades and along come the CTDs. I honestly don't actually believe anything has been done to fix this game and it has all been smoke and mirrors. I hope I am wrong but all evidence seems to point to me being totally right. To say I am disgusted is an understatement! To think..... I actually loved this game warts and all... now? I'm not even sure I can be bothered anymore.

phoenix1963 05-06-2012 12:11 PM

mostly improved, one major problem

Hi all, generally the graphics has improved for me with more realistic integration of the target dots with the landscape.
Not a great deal of fps change on my ati 6970.

The big down side for me is that I still get major slowdown in framerates when multiple aircraft are nearby.

I was hoping this and the CTDs would be fixed.

Please vote on http://www.il2bugtracker.com/issues/253 if you have the same. I'm surprised there wasn't already a "issue" raised pre-patch.

Plt Off JRB Meaker 05-06-2012 12:45 PM

Ok,some observations re the new patch of last night that might or might not have been picked up,if they have,great......here goes.

1.Mission Editor in game menus are now screwed, text all mixed up,rendering it pretty impossible to choose from Type/Group Properties/Waypoints etc.

2.Whilst using Mission Editor aircraft markings cannot be taken off easily if box unchecked, the markings stay on the aircraft in the 3d viewer for a period of time.so if using custom skins the original markings still appear on the aircraft if your not careful.

3.I like the new Hurricane sounds that variate using different RPM,very good.

4.Can't believe this is giving us a 50% rise in the average fps, don't buy that, sorry devs, especially that since this new patch there is a lot of content not enabled now.

5.Game freezes more frequently than before, can't escape, having to use task manager to escape.

Hope is a much used word on here at the moment, but maybe a break through will be made very soon, who knows;)

FFCW_Urizen 05-06-2012 12:56 PM

I had that happen even before the beta, it´s just a lot more frequent now.

Strike 05-06-2012 12:58 PM

OK I'll bite.

I've been testing the new patch on and offline since yesterday, and I must say the first impressions were not good.

First thing I did was to delete the cache contents, apply the patch, and start the game. First thing I did was to fly a quick mission. Dogfight even - low level. Seemed to run fine. Noticed all control column 3D animated hoses, tubes and wires are "see-through" rendering the ground textures in background. Try looking at 109 throttle tube, spit/hurri stick wires, 109 canopy support wire etc... Also any kind of effects caused FPS slowdowns. Shooting bombers with 8x .303's caused stutters and general slowdowns. Taking off and looking down in the cockpit caused stutters. Looking through the dust from outside behind the plane when taking off caused HUGE fps drops.

Sometimes bullet ejected casings appear like black debris? When planes crash into water there is only a faint splash sound, does not sound like a plane impacting water.

Online I had one huge PC freeze (could not press restart button, had to unplug it) and this happened when I was ctrl+F2 cycling through ground units in a MP mission. No crash dump file unfortunately.

Although I did not have any CTD during playing, my two friends had a few (2-4 crashes during about 2 hours) when playing on my server online.

One of my friends switched on his gunsight (hurricane) and the entire plane/cockpit disappeared? He had to rejoin the server to fix it.

So after playing for about 4 hours yesterday evening, I had 1 computer lockup, my two friends had a total of 6-8 crashes, I had numerous launcher.exe crashes in the menu (trying to select a server in client lobby).

I just called quits early and said to myself, this patch is probably broken.

Today, I fired up a few quick missions again and altered a few settings in graphics (turned AA from 8x to 2x, set textures from High to Original) and jumped in again. Wow, that felt totally different. I was seeing an overall fluid gameplay with no stutters or micro-freezes flying 6 hurris against 9 heinkels. I could shoot 1 bomber to shreds while wingmen were hitting others and NO slowdowns whatsoever. That was very different from the results I was getting yesterday, when there were frequent slowdowns when shooting bombers. As a result of the increased framerate, the tracers now look 100 times better and realistic. They no longer seem like they warp forwards, but rather flow rapidly towards the targets!

I noticed a new bug though (I think). Fuel leaks are not rendered anymore at high speeds. When you slow down, you can see the droplets, but you can't see the streaks of fuel/oil any more when you are leaking.

I also noticed you have seemed to fix the sound when bailing out. You can hear the plane veer off into the distance now, instead of a constant engine loudness until the plane crashes.

Will test more, results seem better now!

After the patch, the game doesn't even launch anymore.

1) launching the game shows the "small aircraft on sight" symbol and then simply vanishes (CTD) - no error displayed.
2) Sorry, there's no log created (yes, LOG=1 on conf.ini)
3) On the cache/shaders folder there's only a single file with 0 bytes length, named "1.06.17582"
4) Tried to reinstall the game from scratch, same problem.
4.1) *edit* Tried to apply the patch from other sources, too.
5) Using DX10 with 12.4 Catalyst drivers.

My Specs:
Q6600@2,98Ghz, 4Gb RAM, Win7 x64, HD5850 1Gb video, 1920x1080 full screen.

Fall_Pink? 05-06-2012 01:37 PM

- still large stutters and jumping around of landscape while game loads land textures (tested with single mission '005 - Cross-Country')
- large red square when full screen is set to on. In Pseudo the square does not appear
- AI: too much to mention. A complete overhaul of AI is needed to bring it up to par with il2 4.11.1
- Changing formation or spacing is executed too quickly. Wingmen sometimes collide.
- AI: changing formations, e.g. when wingman moves to your six o'clock to provide cover are far too sudden and defy physics. Sometimes they seem to halt in mid air and to hit some magic brakes.
- radio commands: a lot of work needs to be done. Some items still do not work. Auto pilot seems to be a real auto pilot that cannot be influenced. Issueing "attack fighters" does nothing and AP follows pre-scripted scenario.
- Viewing aircraft (f2) and rotating the view is slow and sluggish.
- CTD: sometimes changing your viewpoint with mouse generates a CTD. Launcher stopped responding...
- Sound hiccups: engine sounds sometimes change for no reason (distance stays the same, angle of view point).
- Propellor animation is poor. Frames seem to be missing. Propellors animation stops and half a second later it spins again.
- Textures look washed and less detailed.
- Loading of textures in cockpit while mission starts is very slow and it takes at few seconds before cockpit is completely drawn.
- icing up of cockpit windows has been simplified.
- fps: somewhat higher fps. Difference between high fps and minimal fps looks to be better however and no longer seems to go to single digits.
- edit: mirror still does not work (using 12.4 ATI and vid card (see sig))

In all, very, very disappointing. I expected a lot more of this patch and I can't believe it has taken them 6 months.

Ataros 05-06-2012 01:51 PM

Anyone who has frequent crashes try disabling HyperThreading in BIOS.

Does it make any difference?

I had a simular experance.. I also saw some other posts where people were talking about the FIRST TIME they ran it it ran like crap.. Than restarted, not sure if they did a PC re-boot, and it ran much better. I wonder of those people how many, like me, deleted the cache prior to the 1st run? Who knows all I know is it ran much better the 2nd time I started the game.. Which only goes to show how complex modern game software is and how one little thing out of wack can make or break you experance.. With that said, it is not too suprising that some of the hard core people who had problems in the past are 'still' having problems post patch.

Small graphics error:

In the Bf109 (E3 and E4) the throttle cable has a "transparent" texture. The same for the cable retaining the hood behind the pilot's head.

Shadow flickering from trees appears worse than before and quite off putting . Also there is no longer a terrain bump map which previously added to the realism of the landscape. There is a slight improvement in FPS, but at what cost? I wonder if SpeedTree is the cause of a lot of the problems here with this sim, with so many trees to cope with and the tree movement (dynamics) to calculate, and individual shadows it must put quite a burden on the CPU.

I can still see the horizon through the control panel.
It was like this before the beta patch and it's still like that.

The image is zoomed, so you can see it clearer.

Why dont they either turn off shadows for the tree's or stop them waving about, pretty sure that would stop the flickering.

I seem to be landing now at 60 mph and still to fast for the grass runway, and took more than the whole field to stop. Spit 1a. Hawking.

Also I can destroy 109's and 110's by ramming them and no damage to my plane.

This was on line.

Gun sight Revi visable outside cockpit.

I took screen shots and nothing in my user screen shots folders.
this is from my fraps screen shots.

Just wanted to bump this little gem. Looks like good advice to follow.
