How did we all survive back in the days of offline gaming!!!
Glad to see Sony are at least communicating slightly more frequently.
And I'll wait to be totally placated when I see the 'new improved' PSN with it's olive branch freebies.

It's all a bit misleading because of multiple accounts, I read today that there are only(?) about 10 million individuals in the database that was compromised, the 77 million figure includes 2nd, 3rd, etc I.D's and prepay peeps.

There have been about 34 million PS3's sold worldwide.

From todays Daily Telegraph

In a detailed letter about the security breach to a US Congressional committee, Kazuo Hirai, chairman of the electronics giant, said the the file discovered by investigators was named "Anonymous" with the words "We are Legion", part of the Anonymous motto.
He also linked the breach, which began on April 16, to denial of service attacks on Sony systems launched by Anonymous in response to legal action against George Hotz.
The 21-year-old American hacker, who goes by the alias "geohot" online, circumvented copyright controls on the PlayStation 3, allowing it to run unauthorised software. Sony sued him in January after he published his discovery of codes embedded in the console that would let any other owner do the same.
"Several Sony companies had been been the target of a large-scale, coordinated denial of service attack by the group called Anonymous," Mr Hirai said.
"The attack were coordinated against Sony as a protest against Sony for exercising its rights in a civil action in the United States District Court in San Francisco against a hacker."
In their denial of service attacks, Anonymous members use specially-created software called the "Low Orbit Ion Cannon" to bombard targets with internet traffic. The tactic is designed to overload servers and force them offline.
On April 11, Sony announced it had settled its case against Mr Hotz out of court, but Anonymous nevertheless vowed revenge. The collective was founded to protest against perceived threats to free speech online.
"In the eyes of the law, the case is closed, for Anonymous it is just beginning," a video message posted on YouTube on April 13 said.
It called for real world protests against Sony on April 16 and warned also warned the firm to "prepare for the biggest attack you have ever witnessed, Anonymous style".
In his letter to the House Commerce Committee, Mr Hirai said Anonymous' denial of service attacks had helped the data thieves, because "security teams were working very hard to defend against denial of service attacks, and that may have made it more difficult to detect this intrusion quickly - all perhaps by design".
The breach of the PlayStation Network, in which 77 million users' names, user names, addresses, email addresses, birth dates, and hashed passwords were stolen, was detected on April 19. The near-simultaneous theft of 25 million gamers' details from Sony Online Entertainment, a PC service, was not detected until 1 May.
Both systems are currently offline and under investigation by digital forensics contractors, and the FBI.
Speculation will now focus on whether Anonymous members were actually behind the thefts, or whether professional cyber criminals hijacked the denial of service attacks and planted references to the collective to cover their tracks.
"Whether those who participated in the denial of service attacks were conspirators or whether they were simply duped into providing cover for a very clever thief, we may never know," Mr Hirai said.
Most computer security experts have so far believed Sony's systems were targeted by a professional criminal or gang seeking to profit from identity theft and credit card fraud.
But although its activities have been dominated by denial of service attacks, Anonymous has previously hacked into target systems.
Earlier this year members breached HBGary Federal, a computer security consultancy that had claimed it could identify Anonymous' leaders. The firm's email archive was published online, forcing the resignation of its chief executive.
The breach of the PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment has already been damaged to Sony. Its share price tumbled almost 5 per cent last week amid investor fears that extended outages and a barrage of lawsuits from angry customers would hit profits.
Sony has been criticised by US politicians, particularly over the week-long delay between the detection of the breach on 19 April and the release of information to customers on 26 April, but Mr Hirai defended the firm.
"Throughout the process, Sony Network Entertainment America was very concerned that announcing partial or tentative information to consumers would cause confusion and lead them to take unnecessary actions if the information was not fully corroborated by forensic evidence," he said.
All 100 million victims have since been urged to change their other online passwords and to monitor their credit card and bank statements closely. The major credit card providers have not yet reported any fraud as a result of the thefts, however.
The FBI already has an active investigation into Anonymous, and issued 40 arrest warrants in January in relation to denial of service attacks against firms including Amazon, PayPal and Visa. The firms were targeted last year after withdrawing services from WikiLeaks.
Six British men and teenage boys are currently on bail after being arrested as part of a coordinated investigation by Scotland Yard.
Anonymous' full motto reads: "We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us – always."

I CAN TRANSLATE WITH GOOGLE,ENGLISH VERSION OF THIS NEW

On 29 April, the official PlayStation Blog announced a start of good news.

Our employees are working day and night to allow a return as soon as possible to our network and we are looking at a possible return of some services in a week beginning 27/04/11.

Including well this brings us to May 4 So yesterday. Since nothing. And no further communication except for a "soon". Obviously Sony does not want to put its online service as its sanctity has been verified, re-verified on-verified. The problem resides elsewhere herein. It is impossible to ensure a secure network to 100%. Impossible.

At the same time, a rapid relapse of the PSN would be even more devastating impact on the image and the business of Sony. So what? We will have to resolve to submit the online PlayStation Network, the most secure manner possible. Unbreakable? No. William Lovett, an expert on cybercrime, we had also said. A situation that complicates the situation diabolically.

However, each day brings its lot of gray areas, doubts, lack of revenue to the developers of frustration for players ... 16 days after stopping the service and the commencement of hearings in court, it is reasonable to wonder how long it will last another blackout PSN? A few days? A week? More than that? The latest news release from Sony recalls now, and unspecified "May".

Certainty, if the NHP is not restored before E3 (early June), while Sony will face a crisis with consequences far more serious than imagined even a few days ago. More than ever, like Sony, gamers, publishers and developers hope that the crisis does not change the economic drama and fun. The multiplayer mode of Uncharted 3 needs NSP, NSP needs the Journey, Amy needs the PSN, Call of Duty requires the PSN FIFA and PES need the PSN ... like so many other crucial games for Sony's online business. Not to mention the frustration of the PlayStation +, who pay for "privileges" additional.

The issue is thorny and is communication from Sony. An exercise of the most delicate, but necessary in times of crisis does not leave room for rumors. As such, it is likely that the manufacturer no longer evokes dates so you do not handle disappointment if they are not required, but instead actively communicating on the concrete steps taken and the progress of the situation .

StiC 05-05-2011 01:15 PM

I think what they mean is that all services will be back up by the end of May. For example the PS Store will be restored sometime after online gaming and chat functions are reinstated. Which makes me wonder how valuable PSN+ will be without the PS Store.

Regards

It seems they are doing internal tests before turning psn back on
I bet there will be many problems after they have turned it back on anyway

Gilly 05-06-2011 11:00 AM

From what Im reading this morning apparently hackers are planning further attacks on Sony this weekend. Suggests that they are also planning to publicise the information they have found on servers too. F'ing joy!
I'll edit this post further if I find anymore out about it.
What a pack of total and utter w@nkers.

Edit:
From CNET

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.
An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.
Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.
Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.
Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.
Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.
Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As far as control goes probably as easy as trying to herd cats!
As for nobility, the word doesn't exist in their vocabulary.

Latest from the playstation blog...
Nick Caplin- Head of Communications (some irony there!) 7th May
As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.

As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects..
When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.

So nothing new there then

Latest from the blog....I'm downloading the update at the minute.

We have been working on a new PS3 system software update that requires all PSN users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. The update (v3.61) is mandatory and is available now.

If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security. If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN. This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password. In this email, click on the link and follow the instructions to change your password. Once you have changed your password you can sign-in to your account using your new password.

We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online. The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

PSN is up in the Northeast United States. The Blog for my region crashed due to many people accessing, then refreshing the page. Interesting.

EDIT: @JR, if you are using your original PS3 which you created the account with, then you should be fine. You will be prompted to change your password, and i'd recommend getting an e-mail that you intend to keep.

Calm down, if U have problems with changing (remembering) your passwords/ e-mail addresses just contact your local PS support/ importer. I think they can solve these kind of problems. Hopefully

Looks like parts of the US are up and there's progressive rolling out going on at minute. Though I guess we're not likely to know here as if I had access I'd not be on here!!!
