Once again I want to point out that a lot of your earlier anger was misplaced. Actually, our colleagues at Ubisoft are extremely interested in making this game a success, they care about our opinion and yours, and everyone we work with there is understanding and cordial and more than willing to listen and change their mind.

Having said that, I'm glad to announce that the debacle has been resolved.

We will be making the filter optional, however turned on by default. And we will be adding a large epilepsy warning to our splash screen. I am almost certain that this update will hit the steam servers on March 30th and thus seamlessly make it onto everyone's machines when the game is installed on the 31st.

The March 30th update will also address some of the issues reported with the Russian version, but we'll provide more details with the patch notes once we know for sure what it'll contain. Obviously, we need to test the heck out of all the changes to make sure we don't introduce any new bugs while fixing the old ones (the team's favorite past time lately as it seems).

So there! Do a happy dance, I know I did.

adonys 03-29-2011 08:12 AM

I'm sorry, but I do not believe a word from this.

Luthier, can you please officially confirm from UBI's part that not only the anti-epilepsy filter would be removed, but also that there won't be any individual anti-epilepsy modifications too? And eventually officially confirm the removal of the already introduced ones?

Because if not, then removing the antiepilepsy filter will only solve the extra crippling FPS introduced by it, but the game's graphic realism will still be crippled, compared with the russian version.

UBI might as well say this now in order to protect its initial sales, but I won't believe a word of it until I will see it with my own eyes, that the graphics of the russian and western versions are the same.

you fools, UBI thrown that statement, as a bone to chew and be silent, to us exactly because of this "hysteria" as you call it and all the cancelled pre-orders and 1C bought versions by westerners. Do you really think Oleg and Luthier haven't tried to make them understand and give up with the stupid idea? IT's just UBI didn't cared about it, and was only stating it will do it now, after they were forced to. I really -really hope they will also do it, not just say it before launch..

That's the internet eh. Please just remember that a lot of us have a bit more patience and really appreciate the hard work you are putting in and what a nightmare this whole thing must have been for you.

Wow, congratulations. Thank you for arguing the case with Ubisoft, and thank you Ubisoft for agreeing to this. That presumably wasn't straight forward for them due to the legalities of it all.

Now...
does this mean the filter will be the long term solution, and we can have it on or off
or...
are you still changing the code so that your game meets the epiliepsy requirements without the filter, meaning that the filter will be removed anyway, and there will no longer be an on/off option?

Thanks

Mysticpuma 03-29-2011 08:31 AM

Triggaaar makes a valid point/question?

Does this mean that having an option to switch the Filter off will then switch off in-game details that were considered the reason for first introducing it?

So "Switch-on" Frame-rates suffer but all effects are enabled, "Switch-Off" and Epilepsy Filter is Disabled but so are lots of the effects?

Just asking if this is what the Option will mean?

Good news that it will be optional, but what does the option do to the game after switching it off?

Cheers, MP

Tvrdi 03-29-2011 08:34 AM

btw its still unclear if this filter will have ON/OFF option withing game GUI or in config.ini....not that its very important but some users are not that much into software/hardware.

I would guess the filter will be a conf.ini setting,to make it a little more difficult to switch off accidentally.
If you want to switch it off,you have to go looking for it and make a concious decision to switch it off.

I guess you've missread my post. In answer to your question, there wouldn't be any point.

What I'm saying is that this 'exciting' news about the option to turn the filter off might be a red herring. That is, they were going to remove the filter soon anyway, and they still will remove it, but in the short term we will have the option to switch it off. Long term, regardless of this announcement, it was going to be removed, because the game is being re-coded. While this may be necessary, it might not be what we'd like because it will reduce the historical accuracy of the graphics (to what extent we don't know).

This is all hypothesizing, hence my question to Luthier.

T}{OR 03-29-2011 11:05 AM

great stuff - have posted before that the team that took us from original il2 to 1946 would do the business for us in fixing things. Sure I would love a perfect game, all the features etc etc on day 1, but I live in the real world so I didn't expect that.
Looking forward to the 31st - 2 Days....BE SURE :-)

We still don't know that the realistic details are going to be available long term, as we don't know if the team is still having to change it all and the effect that would have. The filter was only meant to be a short term solution anyway.

As i understood it re-coding the features that might cause an epileptic seizure was a much more laborious way to do it INSTEAD of the filter.

Thats why they put the filter in in the first place, re-coding would have taken to much time.

So the filter is there and one can turn it on and off. No need to re-code anything.

Anyways, as i understood it.

ubermachtig 03-29-2011 02:11 PM

Awesome!

I am glad that this filter has now become optional. It is unfortunate that it needed a lot of angry posts and heated discussions, but in the end I think it has been worth it.

I'd like to thanks both Maddox and Ubisoft for making this decision, and hope we will see the same kind of support as we previously saw in the original IL2

Once again, thank you:)

CharveL 03-29-2011 02:30 PM

I would add that the performance hit was likely overstated to some degree.

It seems to be a post-process type filter (like Bloom for example) in that it would be largely video card dependent so most newer systems with decent video cards would handle it with minimal frame rate loss. Older systems would probably take a big hit around 10fps or so.

Either way with every frame being important it's good that UBI gave the go-ahead to have the option to turn it off. If this was a console type game, nobody would notice but with the amount of complexity going on for a demanding simulator, it would have a serious impact on knowledgeable buyers as we've seen the past week. I'm sure that eases some stress at 1C.

I'm also sure it's a big relief for Luthier and 1C that they don't have to go into the daunting task of tweaking each offending effect in order to optimize it for minimal performance hit. This is more time that gets spent fixing and optimizing the game rather than mitigating the negative effects of a largely unwanted filter.

From what luthier wrote before, it seemed that they were pretty much set to enforce the filter.

Anyway, this rocks.

Yeah thanks luthier,.i`ll tell you what changed Ubi`s mind was not the communities voice more the fact that some of the community where finding ways of buying a version from Russia without the epil fliter (search for thread " Dear russian fellows") . This was at a fraction of the cost ( around 14 dollars or something) So ubi stand to loose millions in cancelled sales. Sales that could be brought elsewhere. Just goes to show how much money Ubi make from all this.Dont believe thier propaganda poppycock.
I never did like Ubi, not since there lack of support for 1946 on ubi-zoo and anything elso to think of it. (remember folkes the discontinued support for chat on ubi-zoo, long time ago). I hate you UBI.

also a little post statement here.
quote luthier"Actually, our colleagues at Ubisoft are extremely interested in making this game a success, they care about our opinion and yours, and everyone we work with there is understanding and cordial and more than willing to listen and change their mind."

Of course they are they stand to loose a lot of money, they care about our and your opinion? when did this happen? never in my life time have Ubi helped me ot the community when asked.

Triggger I would have thought at this stage at least, the likelihood of having to recode to satisfy epilepsy protocols seems very unlikely; given Ilya has stated an amicable solution with Ubi in which a splash screen warning will be put in place. That, along with the optional filter (or its tweaked replacement) will cater for all, without degrading gaming experience en masse.

Also Ilya's assurance ^ that there will be no difference other than language - this would also make sense regarding unified patches & updates - supports a single global game engine. Epilepsy filter and release date in the US were n no way related.

So I don't think anything changed on the release date.

Yes, good points, thanks.

It was only the other day Ilya posted about the fact that they were still working on the long term solution and that this filter was temporary, and the recent news that the filter was going to be optional didn't also state that the other plans had been scrapped, so I assumed they weren't. I hope you're right anyway.

I can name at least two squadies that did m8, myself not included because I never initially pushed "buy" due to all the debate, first person accounts, etc.. I considered waiting until mid april but with the situation turned as it finally has, CoD will also be a first day purchase for me.

Thank you 1C and Luthier for pushing the agenda and getting rid of the epilepsy crutch that was more than likely forced upon you - even if you'll never officially admit it.

I've lost any respect I've had for UBI or any other eely distributor. I'll be damned if I praise the hand that didn't slap me again this time, as they have so often in the past!

Cheers

We're celebrating in Italy, too. A happy day.

JG14_Jagr 03-29-2011 06:20 PM

I'm very happy to hear the news Luthier. One question, obviously a tidal wave of cancellations on Ubi's servers made them willing to listen to alternatives. Will you now be able to use an earlier build of the game before the initial testing of the filter caused all the graphic effects to be removed and just put the filter on top of the whole mess?

Obviously the game, and the series would be a LOT better off being built on the foundation you have before this filter mess forced you to rip things out and put in place holders.. Looking at the wing guns firing and the tracers leads me to believe that it was certainly NOT the original version in the game.

On a positive note I will re enter my Pre Order and will likely buy 2 versions so my son can fly as well.

zauii 03-29-2011 06:36 PM

I honestly doubt it had anything to do with "cancelled preorders".
But if it makes you feel better fine.

No I dont feel better because of that. I just offered my point of view. Why I think the reaction was so fast and right on the spot. Thats my opinion only. The question is: Do you feel better thinking I hate this sim and the team and that I want to make troubles.
Give me a break dudo, I was the one who owned il2 copy back then in 2001 and who made few "small" contributions to the game contacting Oleg on some issues which made them fix some things. Im the one who preordered COD and waited 7 yrs to come out.

shhh

ATAG_Doc 03-29-2011 08:25 PM

I think everyone loves the sim and is eager to get their hands on it. And they perhaps feel that due to forces beyond their control they will end up not getting the product that took years to produce.

They've all been dreaming of seeing that flaming 109 through the hypnotizing rotating seizure creating prop blade. Yes that's what they want. They want not only a visually pleasing product but they want one that is also physically pleasing as well.

Necrobaron 03-29-2011 08:46 PM

The solution...it's so logical! Maybe we could having warning screens and options settings for other controversial aspects too.;)

They can fix the filter problem but not get rid of the Steam problem? I frequent some IL2 forums where about 90% of the people are staying away from this game due to Steam. That would not include this forum, the Ubi-zoo or SimHQ, however. Those forums are roughly flip-flopped, where about 80% are not concerned about Steam at all. But the game would get much better sales overall without Steam. Maybe as much as 200,000 more people buying, but that's just a guesstimate on my part. Whether people can understand it or not, there are a lot of us Steam haters around. Get used to it, you can't wish it away.

Steam servers are sometimes screwed up. Generally though, I like the service though I dont use it much. ALl i know is the download speeds off the site always max my connection :D

Well, i imagine that to build what steam offers would cost 1c and/or ubi more than the loss of even 200000 (largely exaggerated, imho) sales.
So it is a net gain for 1c/ubi and only the loss of the "steam-haters", isn't it?

Wynthorpe 03-30-2011 07:32 AM

Well said robtek! Those staying away cause they "hate steam" for some rediculous reason are just going to loose out and have to keep playing with an old sim.

Agree. Most people still playing IL-2 will get into CoD even with steam. Especially when the IL-2 servers dry up.

200000k? Really... Anyway, whatever sales are lost because of steam will be more than made up for. Just think of the exposure - still on the Top 20 list.

Maybe ppl bypassing Steam would reconsider once they saw the numbers of IL-2 sales back in the days. All of the old titles sales have been bad, and I saw few interviews with Oleg Maddox saying close to 50% onliners didn`t buy the game at all (some say that it is closer to 95%). It is entirely understandable for me that 1C would use SOME kind of protection this time, even if it prevents pirates only from playing online. But the catch here is : online is the place to be. Saying that more ppl would buy this without Steam is simply untrue - they would simply torrent it because they can. And from what I heard and read, the 200.000 figure would be a big success for 1C if CloD ever sold like that.
With a market as small as that, every sold copy counts.

That is a given. The nature of the beast. Just like cell phones. As soon as the new one comes along there will be a steady bleeding off of the old people step into the new. There will be a long period of life still for the old but it will be a steady decline. This is just life in the sim world.

Haha that is the most hilarious overestimate since The Church of Scientology last claimed their number of practitioners.

The game would be doing very well to manage to sell 200K copies worldwide, period. Some crazy little IL-2 forum is hardly an indicator for average gaming demographics. There are tens of millions of steam users. I absolutely guarantee that the game will sell more copies during its first steam special (usually happens within a year of release) than the total number of people even registered on whatever forums you are talking about.

Especially as the forum community "die hard fans" cancel their pre orders at every minor rumor looping around here ;)

Very good news,
but saying our anger was misplaced is kind of silly.
Obviously, the anger was properly placed and the people who could make this go away made it go away. Without that anger, no change.

But I realize that 1C has to say what it has to say.

Epi Pen injected into Steam this morning Australia time.

Hi all,

I am in Melbourne Australia and Luthier Epi pen has been jabbed into my Steam account with success.

I was getting 10-18fps in a single mission over the water attacking bombers. Now I am getting 25-35 fps on Medium settings 1980x1080.

Sli still not working correct. When it is on I get black screens and menus do not show unless my mouse moves over the words. So for now switch SLI off.

Still need to upgrade to an i7 this weekend i think.

I am not sure if it is my game or not, but it seems that the graphics (even turned full on to very high) do not reflect that in the game. It is like the lods or actual high graphics settings do not take effect on screen so if I pause the game and look at a flack gun on ground the model looks like it is drawn in very low detail and not very high detail.....

Maybe this is to be fixed in a patch on the 1st of April..

Anyway... I can fly on medium settings now but of course fps dip to 2fps when you shoot up a plane or 5 bombers decide to change course.

Love your work at 1c. Well done Luthier and Oleg. Can't wait for this to be optimized.

my pc (Maybe below par for this game????) But I can no way see how I can even get a still frame to look as good as the images on other videos or the Dev diary video. any clues??

42' lcd at 1980x1080 native
